Overall a fun place to spend the day. It was 66°in July and foggy.. a very nice reprieve from triple digit weather. The seals and pelicans were were very noisy and fun to listen to. Lots of Restaurants of all types, knick knack shops, boutiques and some cool galleries. Although it was crowded on a sunday in July, we drove around a little bit and then found a great spot on the street 1/2 block from the shops and main street. If were ever in San Luis Obispo county we'll be sure to come here again. read more

Amazing area. The sunset is a beautiful sight, not just across the water, but also over the mountains that run along side of the water. At night, the lights from the village reflects off the water and the entire area is truly peaceful. I had taken pictures from a distant hilltop, but finally venturing to the beach area was worth the trip. It wasn't overly crowded, at sunset it got a little more populated, but not too much to make it unenjoyable. read more

Three reasons why Morro Bay so awesome? First, that looming rock in the distance- in a way it's the Eiffel Tower of volcanic plugs, a big beautiful mountain, much like the Matterhorn's Mexican cousin that is a perfect backdrop for a sleepy, often misty port. Like the Los Arcos of Cabo, you'll want the seat facing it, you'll want the room with the rock view. It's a focal point, an art installation, simple yet mysterious; it's a natural wonder, strong but lonely, a geologic signature of the city. Second, it's the kind of place with fat sea otters within sight of the blue clean shore, where even three blocks from shore you can be woken up from the barking of sea lions, with $10 boat rides and plenty of restaurants and bars along the port and main street a few blocks away. I reviewed Windows on the Water, Dorn's, Blue Sky Bistro, Stax, Legends, Sabetta's Pizza, Giancarlo's, Chateau Margene, Top Dog, (Captain Stew), and La Serena Inn. Third, it makes it the perfect home base to visit Paso Robles or Hearst Castle. Paso Robles has over 150 wine tasting rooms, but as inconvenient as it sounds, rather than stay in the Phoenix of Wine Country (Paso is seriously 33 degrees hotter), I'd rather wake up for breakfast in Morro Bay, drive 40 minutes to Paso, and then come back to this gorgeous town where I can drink within crawling distance of my bed. It was 104 when we left Paso Robles and the outside temperature changed 33 degrees to 71 (no joke) in a half hour drive. And San Simeon, home of Hearst Castle, a 40 minute drive up the coast, is not a place to stay unless you are an elephant seal, in which case it's a hot spot. We can't wait to come back for morro fun. This place is beautiful. Seriously. I can't believe I have never been here. I've lived in CA almost my entire life and have never had the chance to visit this place. It is gorgeous and breathtaking. My husband's family goes camping every single year and they usually choose different places every year. This year, they chose the campgrounds at Morro Bay. It was such a fun camping trip and so close to town which was amazing. We were able to watch the sunset on the beach on our second night and it was beautiful. There's tons of places to eat, cute little shops, golf, sweets etc. Definitely try and spend a weekend here to take it all in. There's little fishing and cruise trips you can also check out. The rock right next to the beach is also beautiful. During our camping trip, we took a 3 mile hike (round trip) which provided us with amazing views of the town and the rock. Do it! It's totally worth it. If you're staying at the camp ground, you can start at the group camp area and the total hike will take about 1.5 to 2 hours. Bring water and snacks as well! Spend some time at the beach and enjoy the wonderful views of the ocean. Highly recommend a visit if you're in California. read more

Morro Bay is such a great spot on the central coast. Hubs and I came up for a long weekend away, and we had a wonderful time. We wandered around the downtown, looked at all of the pretty boats in the marina, checked out all of the supercute shops, and stopped in to some great restaurants with a gorgeous view of the water and, of course, the rock. We spent an afternoon exploring the big rock, enjoying the huge waves crashing on the break, and the natural pool that you can wade in. Morro bay is an ideal spot for a romantic getaway, or one with the family. There is so much to do and see there! read more

A must stop on the drive up the 1 along the Central Coast. This sea port has so much to offer, but I'm afraid so many people pass it by because they only see the three smoke stacks. I make it a point to stop on every trip up, there's always something new to experience. Much to love about the fishing village / harbor town of Morro Bay on the Central Coast. Through the years I've visited many times, from driving over in the 70's from Fresno to enjoy fresh seafood at The Breakers during college years, to getaways in the 90's for golf, to present day. Last week, DH and our oldest nephew all tried kayaking for the first time. Fabulous experience on a gorgeous afternoon! The views of the Rock and coastal mountains from the water and sand bar were lovely. After that adventure and lunch, we were able to play chess on the giant chessboard on the Embarcadero. It's a different perspective when the board is that large! My Bro and younger nephews came down from the Bay Area and met us there. We strolled around the waterfront checking out the shop displays and various businesses, including the skateboard museum. Observed seals and sea lions in the harbor and drove to the base of the Rock and watched the many shorebirds soaring overhead. There's much scenic beauty here and funky waterside man-made kitsch that's fun to enjoy. read more

Worht a drive by but there is absolutely nothing to do here but walk along the beach, fish or whale watch. The sand has something in it that sticks to your shoes so be careful when returning to your car. My chihuahuas loved it because there were tons of stinky dead stuff in the sand. They rolled around in it and had a ball. Just up the road is Hearst Castle, so its worth a stop for a photo. read more

No one is out on the streets around that time or business is really open. During the COVID-19 pandemic the city took very big and cautious precautions. My friend chose to stay in this area, as the Morro Bay area was kind of the half way point between the San Francisco to Los Angeles. Although I flew into Los Angeles from Hawaii, I continued to hop on another flight to Sacramento. My plan or adventures was to fly into Sacramento, then drive back to Los Angeles for a few reasons. 1. I wanted to do the run (drive) again, because I haven't done this since I was a kid, and I really wanted to see the sights along the way on Hwy 1. 2. Going to Los Angeles for the sole purpose of seeing a close friend, & to eat something I've been craving for............ for like over 20 years (and I'm not kidding). You must read that review when I post it..........I believe I will make it my 900th review, because this place has a special place in my heart! Now don't get me wrong, although I use to go to L.A. for work in past years, because when I go there for business, I never had the chance to fulfill my cravings for that special item I've longed for........and this particular business I'm talking about is only in Southern California, and there are only (2) locations left on this earth. I had to look up a little history about Morro Bay, because truly.......... I didn't know anything about this place, aside from it being a small sleepy Oceanside town that had great places to eat, a beach, & a few stores where you can do some shopping. Looking it up on Google, I found some interesting facts - In 1542, Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo named Morro Bay's magnificent landmark "El Morro" (Spanish for crown shaped hill). Morro Rock is also sometimes called the "Gibraltar of the Pacific." ... At a height of 576 feet, Morro Rock has been an important marine navigational aid for over 300 years. The town of Morro Bay was founded by Franklin Riley in 1870 as a port for the export of dairy and ranch products. He was instrumental in the building of a wharf which has now become the Embarcadero. During the 1870s, schooners could often be seen at the Embarcadero picking up wool, potatoes, barley, and dairy products. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the town has been a center for beach holidays. Tourism is the city's largest industry, coexisting with the town's commercial fishery. The most popular beach is on the north side of Morro Rock, north of the harbor. There are also excellent beaches north and south of the town which are now owned by the State of California. In the 1940s, Morro Bay developed an abalone fishing industry; it peaked in 1957, and stocks of abalone have declined significantly due to overfishing. Halibut, sole, rockfish, albacore, and many other species are still caught by both commercial and sport vessels. In addition, oysters are aquacultured in the shallow back bay. There are a lot of activities you can do like taking a stroll along the Embarcadero, fishing off of the harbor pier, watching the sea lions off of the wooden platform, or watching the sea gulls flying around. Take a boat ride in the bay, watch the sunrise or sunset on the little park fronting the Morro Rock. If you like to stay active, there is kayaking in the bay, and in the little town, I saw a surf shop.......maybe you can SUP (stand up paddling) or surf? I have recently visited Morro Bay, and I really enjoyed it. It is such a small cute town, which reminded me cozy Mediterranean towns. It is a small town, and there is one main street with many shops, which ends by the natural harbor, natural harbor is surrounded by very nice shops and restaurants, I really enjoyed walking from Morro rock all the way to the city park on the other end, it is like one hour walk. There are many city restrooms that you can use if needed. I really enjoyed buying salty Tuffys, and eating fish and chips. Morro rock is very interesting, a historic volcanic rock, and you have to go behind the rock to see waves crashing to shore. I really enjoyed riding my bike along the beach, north of Morro rock, which is very nice, however it was really wavy. On Saturday, main city street had farmers market which was nice. I also enjoyed kayaking in the natural harbor very much, it was peaceful, calm and relaxing. I will definitely go back. read more

Morro Bay is absolutely beautiful. Small town area with a lot of character. The rock and the beach area are serene. Its so peaceful there. If it weren't so far I would come here a lot more often. It's become one of the many places we've created unforgettable memories. The shops and restaurants are neat. We've stayed at 456 embarcadero and eaten at a few of the restaurants. No complaints here. Love kayaking in this bay. Water is calm and there's never too many people. You can easily paddle across the bay in 15-20 mins. Across the bay is some beach you can hangout at. You'll definitely see some otters and fish along the way. A wonderful morning activity. They have rental places right by the shore. We were just driving through town and decided to check out the Gibraltar of the Pacific...Morro Rock. From internet: The rock itself was mined on and off until 1963. Morro Rock provided material for the break water of Morro Bay and Port San Luis Harbor. In 1966, a bill was introduced which transferred the full title to the State of California. Later the San Luis Obispo County Historical Society and the City of Morro Bay succeeded in getting the Morro Rock declared as California Registered Historical Landmark #821. Morro Rock also became State Landmark #801 in 1968. The rock has since been designated a bird sanctuary for the peregrine falcon and other bird species. Cutest town! Came down for a weekend and love the feel of the small town and walking downtown with our dog. A lot of restaurants are dog friendly as well and most of the shops let you bring your dog in if you ask. Tons of shops and tourist shops that are worth the walk down to the harbor. Hey, we saw some great places in Morro Bay for our retirement too along the freeway & in the hillsides of Morro Bay. Lord knows I have a little over 7 years until I retire, and Marty has a little over 9 until he does; we are going as soon as I hit 65, that does it! We will be back again this Spring for more than just 8 days this time, we are gong for a month. We saw the rock, The Rock of Morro Bay, (a volcanic plug) from our room every morning we awoke in November 2013 from our living room here! Hearst Castle, Pismo Beach, San Louis Obispo are among many more of the cities that are just as enchanting with their own culture & premise, and they are just 20-30 minutes from town to explore. And, Cal-Poly is teaming with students who will give you guided tours of the campus too-we just asked. Touristy yes, but explore beyond the oceanfront gift shops and into the Los Osos area, where wildlife preserves, bird sanctuaries with water fowl abounding with undisturbed and unpolluted habitats are a plenty. The seafood is the best, and Giovanni's serves up the best stand in line, for an hour sometimes, seafood combos, & clam chowder (free with a Yelp check-in) you have ever experienced! The citizens of this town, just like in any other are friendly, and in town away from the touristy areas there are great places to eat from just about any culture, an Albertson's Market, hell, even a Dollar Tree & your fast food restaurants are there for you-I love Dollar tree! On many walks, we experienced on the southern side of The Rock, areas for discovering undisturbed wildlife, no trash in the water, beautiful fish, on the northern side of The Rock, is a surfer's paradise, (the eye candy is mesmerizing), the waves are perfect, and the fauna on the sheltered side is so lush the ocean air brings out every aroma of it to your olfactories. Also, even at low tide were able to collect shells & different colors of sand to make triads, tiered with shells and the sand for our good friends, Robin Z, Andrea & Erin V for their Christmas gifts; where do you see shells on any beaches still intact here on beaches, and in such a variety in Long beach, even in Huntington beach for that matter?! Nice breezy stroll but the air smells very fishy (expected :-)). I stumbled upon The Shell Shop store and that was my favorite!! Ahhhh fishing paradise ... I guess. I never get tired coming here at this central coast land mark. It's beautiful place to go and visit even for a few hours. I remember 7 years ago, the last time we were here, this place was still not that that crowded and less touristy. Things have change these last few years. The first time we came here, it was me and my wife passing through on our way home from one of our road trips. We have enjoyed fish and chips and I know your not suppose to but fed a seagull that was so close by and unafraid of me with some of my chips LOL. We also seen seals swimming around the pier and in fact until now, they have a small platform in the middle of the bay were they can enjoyed basking in the sun and have no worries with great whites. This time around though, there were more people as I can imagine, more visitors enjoying this place for sure. In fact there were ferry tours and kayak rentals. I don't remember those 7 years ago but then again I probably didn't pay attention. There are lots of shops and restaurants in this little town/city. And if it's warm, you can go by the Morro rock area , park your car and frolic in the water read more

Morro Bay is a beautiful place. There is tons to do in the area. You can exercise along the boardwalk and fishermans area. You can also eat at almost any type of restaurant. Site seeing at the huge rock at the North end of the bay where you can also watch kite surfers and lay out on the windy beach. Parking is free right next to the large dome rock and there are bathrooms and trashcans. You can drive all the way to the base of the rock where there is a parking lot to check out the sites. Just exit the freeway to the beach and then start driving towards the rock and you will find the way. There are lots of boats parked here to and it's cool to fantasize about owning one of them and supplying restaurants with fresh fish each day. It does get windy in the area as it was today when we went (May 2015). Sand will blow in your face and you can taste the beach and salt water to maximize your experience. We came here solely to see the large dome and drove off within 20 min. It's a nice quick stop if you don't plan on eating here. There are many restaurants of all price ranges and gas stations around. read more

The view of Morro Bay during sunset is truly magnificent. This wide stretch of sandy beach is enjoyed by local residents who come here to exercise and relax, and is generally deserted before nightfall. There are tons of sand dollars* strewn all over the beach. A large area of the beach is roped off as the snowy plover sanctuary. The view is simply intoxicating as the sun gradually descends into the horizon overlooking the majestic ocean with its rippling tides.The experience is intensified by the cool evening air and the iconic Morro Rock on the left background. Marine birds become very active during this time. Seagulls and cormorants hovering and diving into the water to catch their prey. The snowy plovers with their quick little feet darting about the shore in search for stranded shell fish. The Morro Bay sunset is truly an awe-aspiring experience. *Side note on the sand dollar - The ones that are cast up on a beach - in white, with an obvious five-pointed shape on the back - are actually exoskeleton of sand dollars. Morro Bay is an amazing place to travel especially when I want to get away from noisy SD. People here are friendly and there are a lot of good mix of shops and restaurants around. A great place to relax and be calmed. Beach- Outstanding ocean view! The sand has hundreds of sand dollars! Perfect beach to surf. My husband and I stayed for a night at their camping ground. We got a decent spot near the restroom and near the beach. Plenty of outside tables to use and BBQ fire pits. Park ranger patrols at night. Morro Rock- a 581-foot volcanic plug located at the entrance to Morro Bay Harbor. The rock is spectacular to see. You can walk across the inlet to get closer and walk around the rock. Seabirds favorite hangout! Dog friendly beach- Yes! One of the best place to relax & recharge in the nature without having to be totally away from the convenience of the modern world. How have I never reviewed Morro Bay before?? Okay, so this is not a place I ever go alone. But when people come to town to visit and want to get a taste of what it means to live on the Central Coast this is a must go. From the shops along the embarcadero, fun walking paths along the bay, a stroll around Morro Rock, or eating at fun little bayside eateries this place can easily swallow half a day or more. There is stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, whale watching tours, and surfing all within about 5 minutes of one another. Some great downtown resturants, a fun little movie theter people love, and some amazing stretches of beach. Just coming here to walk the beach is enjoyable all on its own. While it's usually more overcast, and cool here comapred to Avila or Pismo it has a charm and a beach bay feel that none of our other beaches offer. We came here last April and only stayed for a day and a half, but we loved it so much we came back 4 months later. Driving here from the Las Vegas area makes it quite the journey, it took us about 7 hours and the distance is 415 miles. I guess you could fly part of the way, land at LAX airport, rent a car....but it is still nearly 200 miles more to drive! The city is small, but there is plenty to see and do. Touristy yes, but if you look around you can partake or exclude yourself from it all. Restaurants, gift shops, seafood and plenty of choices for lodging. Morro bay is one place we now look forward to returning over and over again. Down south in Southern CA, San Clemente is the other go to place for us by the sea. Further up from Morro Bay, we also like Pacifica which is just south of San Francisco. read more

Came up here once with some family. This lake is absolutely stunning and so relaxing. Kayaking here is so serene and the view is amazing. To get across takes less than 30 minutes. The lake is very calm and you can see some critters in the water. Saw a seal once which was cool. Make sure to check the tides or you could get stranded in the lake. read more

Shocked. Absolutely shocked. How could there be so little reviews for Morro Bay? Then again, we won't complain if it's not horribly crowded whenever we visit! :D I suppose it'll be considered a hidden gem. You know, as a big huge island plug would be considered to be hidden. The bf and I didn't actually cross over the road to get onto the Morro Rock, but we enjoyed the view from the street area. We liked it so much that we gave it the nickname of "the buttplug of the volcano". Yea, we entertain ourselves. :) The actual bay area is pretty relaxing. We came on a weekday, so there weren't very many tourists. Instead, lots of the local people were there. Very nice people, too, where they would volunteer to take our picture with our camera of the bay or the buttplug. The shops are small and are mom and pop stores. There will be a LOT of flies, but you'll find the staff trying to kill them with a fly swatter. We didn't have any of the food there, though, so can't say much about it. Parking is free, and pretty plentiful! And, with the ocean breeze, a very nice walk to whereever you go. We also saw one of the harbor seals when we were overlooking the ocean on one of the dock areas. Absolutely beautiful creatures. Really relaxing place. Bf made it one of his favorite places of our weekend trip, so we'll likely be back if we make another road trip. read more

The beach just north of Morro Bay Rock was fun to go to and watch people surf. In September everyone was wearing full suits and there were about forty surfers, a couple photographers, and a handful of people watching. We even saw a guy on a standup paddle board riding the waves. Public restrooms and limited benches were available. read more
