ASDA, which is owned these days by American giant Wal Mart, runs this large supermarket which…read moredominates the southern end of Sutton town centre. I had always thought this was akin to a mega store judging from its size from the outside when I drive past. Today, I had the opportunity to pop in for a look and quick browse around. Surprisingly, the inside isn't quite as cavernous as I thought. Taken with the high shelves and slightly muted lighting, this makes for a slightly claustrophobic feel to the place. The range of goods is also not as big as the nearby Tesco and Sainsbury superstores. However, having said that, what I loved about ASDA are their low prices. The goods I bought today are definitely and substantially cheaper than at nearby Tesco. By the way, shoppers of the world, beware! In case you haven't read the Sunday Times expose from 2 weekends ago, Tesco is trying to fool by announcing a cut in price of hundreds of store items. What they've really done is to cut these prices by a few pence whilst hiking up the price of a lot of other commonly bought goods by a lot more. This sort of sharp practice and treating customers as mugs is rightly costing them market share. While not as blown away as I thought I would be, the prices still made me leave a happy shopper

Morrisons took over this site, which used to be a Safeway. With its northern roots, the Morrisons…read morebrand promised good prices but also a more personal service with proper butchers and fishmongers in-store. Overall, I believe that they've delivered on that promise. This Wimbledon store is a good size but can't compete on floorspace with the giant Sainsburys Savacentre or the Tesco Extra store nearby. However, it's a good size for a town centre supermarket. They have a nice selection of food counters where you can buy and eat at the tables provided. Alternatively you can take home a ready made meal such as fresh pizza to be cooked at home. I like their fish counter very much and I tend to find more interesting fish and seafood here than at their competitors. I've bought fresh oysters, octopus and sushi grade fish here. They will scale and prepare any of the fresh fish for you. Similarly the butchers seem to know what they're talking about. The rest of the store is quite generic. One trick I feel they're missing is a loyalty scheme like Tesco's Clubcard

It hasn't changed much in the years that it's been part of the local shopping scene although the cafe has gone to make way for a plant department. There always seem to be queues at the checkouts although the store is generally well-staffed. This may be testament to its good value. I believe that it now stays open until 11pm on weekdays and, further to Yee Gan's review, there is a loyalty/price comparison card available.

Buckle up boys and girls because this little market is going to take you for a ridiculous journey…read moredown the craft beer rabbit hole. Freshfields Market is a small easily overlooked corner shop that looks like it's only used during those times in desperation (i.e., when all the other shops are closed and you NEED an obscure herb.) WRONG. Freshfields Market has an ASTONISHING array of local and international craft beers. Seriously, there is a whole freaking WALL devoted to the fine art of artisanal brews. From the well known craft breweries like Thornbridge to the distinctly local like Cronx, Freshfields has a dizzying selection of beers that would make even the most casual of drinkers tingle with excitement. Every time my husband and I visit we stand in front of the shelves like the proverbial kids in a candy shop unable to make a decision on which of the beers to try. It is no secret that I enjoy my beer. I brew it, I'm looking for a career in it... and this, man... this shop makes me feel like a child. It makes me excited to be a part of a growing demographic of young professionals who are looking to push the boundaries of brewing. Moreover, makes me excited as a consumer to see what was once a dwindling selection of ales suddenly explode into an interest in the "traditional" beer of England. If you find yourself overwhelmed by the selection Freshfields have got your back. They've hired a seasoned-drinker and well-educated staff member to help you pick out the perfect beer for your palate. BUT THAT'S NOT ALL. They not only carry bottled beer but also they have the option of purchasing four pint carry outs that are tapped from two barrels so you get your beer straight from the barrel and not bottle conditioned. As far as the prices go, they're about the price you would expect to pay for craft beer - which is to say not that cheap. However, the last two times I have gone they have done a deal on craft beers - something like 6 craft beers for £12, I can't remember. Either way, this little corner shop may seem to be like any other but don't let the outside fool you, inside it is Croydon's very own craft beer Valhalla and if it suits you, I would go on a pilgrimage as soon as possible.
