When doing research at places I know pretty well and do go and spend time at, I thought I have to…read morewrite my review for 'House of Fraser' I can't speak for anyone else about this one, but I really love it, their have been some changes over the years to the store, some good, some not so good, but all in all, it's your typical department store where you can go, you can enjoy looking around, their is a Caffe Nero there that is very good and though out the departments, a wide range of fashion, home, furniture and food..etc.. You name it. The staff are very friendly and pleasant, always on hand to help. I myself am saving up for Xmas (coming to quick) and they have some great ideas for presents too. My advice, save up a bit, put some money aside and go and treat yourself from time to time. At 'House of Fraser' their is something there for everyone!

It's built over Prince's Dock which adds a unique twist to the centre, meaning as you walk along, you can see the river which looks so beautiful in the sunshine, yet the mall is full of either cheap, tacky stores or empty units. There are very few familiar brands in terms of shopping, other than a large Primark store. It does get better for food and drink, with some options including Nando's and Pizza Express and for leisure, there's a Vue cinema. The security staff in the mall didn't seem too friendly and made me feel uncomfortable just for wanting to visit Pizza Express. This place has so much potential, they need to shut the place down for however long it takes to renovate the mall and fill the empty units, as for now this is only going to be a place one would visit if heading to the cinema or a specific brand within the mall, it just seems depressing to walk through. 2*

Several of the smaller units on one of the strips have closed down and construction has just started to turn this space into one large unit taken by Next which will be great as the Next we currently have resembles a broom cupboard!! MK One has closed down and with Adams reportedly in trouble, new businesses could be filling these units. hopefully sooner than later. It has craft stalls around the upper mall during certain times of the year and has a good feeling to the place.

I have allways particularly liked the sewing department. They have trimmings ,elastic etc.by the metre. They have loads of craft stuff, gardening ,clothes ,shoes. The DIY department is good . There are some very good special offers and famous names in clothes and electricals at fantastic prices.they have sweets and household items. There was one big disappointment---they stopped selling curtain fabrics which they had long been famous for. I couldn't believe it at first and assumed it was being moved.Then I tried stores in other towns and they had stopped too.

Very cheap clothing, undies, shoes, crockery and kitchen stuff, gardening equipment, sweeties, CHEAP branded toiletries and cosmetics eg famous name moisturisers normally 20 squid for £3.99, tons of tools and DIY stuff including paint. It is mainly known names..may be end of line. I bought a Wonderbra for £3.99! Upstairs is THe bit for me. They have carpets, flooring, bedding furniture, curtains etc but thecraft supplies are top notch and cheap!!! Big range of cheap and gorgeous fabrics..clothing or household, patterns, wool. Whatever your hobby or craft you will find something here. I saw an overlocker (normally about £350 for £60! I may have to go the 200 miles back soon as I have withdrawal symptoms and cannot find a lot of the stuff online and certainly not as cheap.

Their store in Freeman street is a gold mine of everything and the experienced staff really know what they do and don't have. We need to keep such companies going,,, because as you all know,, what you see on the internet does not always mean value for money. Hoopers on James Street is the largest department store in Harrogate town centre, it is located…read moreover five floors in a fairly old building. The layout of the store did seem a little strange, which could be down to the building its-self, you have to pass through the Cafe, and then a set of doors after going out of the lift on the Basement, to get into the Menswear section, despite having five floors, each individual floor was not overly large, with the top floor being just "customer services", but the store was a reasonable size overall. I did notice some of the clothing sections to be a little laid out like a jumble sale, they did have some good items at reasonable prices though, so not a wasted trip by any means. The Ground Floor was nicely laid out, and perhaps the most welcoming and premium area of the store, showcasing a range of fragrances and beauty products. The opening hours are pretty draconian, so plan ahead, they are open between 10 am and 5 pm Monday to Saturday and do not open on Sundays. I probably wouldn't return, but a nice addition to the shopping scene in Harrogate's town centre. 3*
