Aldi is a national supermarket, which is expanding in the recession. The store has been on the site for about 4 years now. I have to admit Aldi are my favourite supermarket at the moment as they are so much cheaper than the other three big supermarkets in Selby. Recently awarded with the Retail Industry Award 2008 and The Grocer Gold Award, Aldi has grown in strength throughout the credit-crunch. I would say one of their best buys is the top 6 items of fresh fruit and vegetables each week for 49p! There is everything you would expect in an average supermarket but own brand and at cheaper prices. Aldi have great offers/special buys on non-food items from televisions to books and computers.

If, like me, you ever struggle to choose between about three sandwhich options then you may be liable to be frozen in cant-decide panic at the endless choices presented to you by Abu Bakar! Even the halva section appears to be never ending! They sell a wide selection of vegetables, a broad variety of juices, endless rows of pulses, spices, herbs, cakes, bread, jars of pickled items, huge sacks of rice and flour - possibly aimed at businesses but may be handy if you live in a big house, loads of condiments (including some very mysterious and tantalising items such as a pot of chololate and cherry something...spread?...whose ingredients list was in Polish only). Homeware-wise they have pots, pans, crockery and kitchen utensils. There is also a halal meat counter. As Susan mentions, Abu Bakar is aimed at the Aisian community, but for anyone like me with boringly British culinary habits it is a fascinating and exciting place of endless possibilities and obscure and intriguing ingredients.

The shop is well stocked and laid out with fresh counted for fish, meat, cheese and cakes. They have an excellent wine section with a specialist roaming around nearby :) As a regular I have come to know the people that work there so it makes the experience all the more enjoyable. The quick pay service and the free newspaper for myWaitrose members is an added bonus. I go shopping on my motorbike so it helps that I can pack my rucksack and saddle bags as I go rather than all at the end of my shop at the checkout. Enjoy :)

Sainsbury's is one of the 4 big supermarkets in the country. Originally opened in 1869 the first store in Drury Lane soon paved the way to over 500 supermarkets and convenience stores nationwide. The new store in Selby seems to be doing well at the moment. Tesco prices have got silly; Morrison is good for offers, leaving Aldi the winner but with little choice. By default that leaves Sainsbury's in quite a good position. I like Sainsbury's ethics, their carrier bags are not dished out, and their stand on free-range products leads the way. They have improved their basic range and I like the meal planners and recipes.oh and Jamie Oliver's a bit fit too :)

Morrisons 'market place' is a unique set out for a supermarket and you can find fresh fruit and veg along side a fish monger and butchers where just like the advert shows you, the staff will be more than happy to talk you through whatever cut of meat you require or even fillet your fish for you. There is also a bakery and rotisserie offering yummy treats such as pork pies and sausage rolls as well as hot roast chickens. Another good point worth mentioning about Morrisons is that they do from time to time do brilliant offers. It's worth looking out for them on the internet or in your local paper.

A bachelors dream and situated in the centre of town right next to the Abbey Vaults so with the money you save you can treat yourself to a couple of pints! The store replaced the indoor market which was called the In-shops that never really took off. There is no parking for the store but there is a fair sized Pay and Display car park just around the corner. The store is light and spacious. I would describe Home Bargains as a bit of an Aladdin's cave as they seem to stock just about everything from toiletries, toys, baby essentials, stationary, household, foods and drinks. The stock is usually branded good quality products but significantly reduced. The toy section is well stocked and many of them are below half the retail price. I use the toiletries and food sections the most as they must be a good 30% cheaperer than the supermarkets. I have to say I rate this store really high as I have now cut my main shop in the supermarket and replaced many of the good with Home Bargains. I shop here weekly.
