Julia, the owner, is not only an incredibly talented artist but also a truly gifted teacher. She's so patient and encouraging with the kids, and our daughter has learned so much under her guidance. Each class is thoughtfully structured into two parts -- drawing/painting and then clay molding -- which keeps the kids engaged and excited. The mix of ages has also been wonderful, as our daughter (one of the youngest) learns so much from watching the older students. We couldn't recommend Young Art Studio more for any child who loves to create and express themselves through art!

Im off to college now but I will always be back to visit. A huge part of why I love this place is so much is because of the teacher, Julia. She is the most supportive and kindest people I have ever met. She will give you the best advice on how to approach a drawing and she knows exactly how to help you grow as an artist. She celebrates every little improvement and reminds you that mistakes are just part of the process. Over the many years I have been at this studio, I have learned so many new techniques. But most importantly, I learned to believe in myself because Julia always believed in me, even when I doubted myself. One of my favorite memories is of a black and white drawing I did of a girl. I was scared to start it at first because I didn't have the confidence. I didn't think I was capable of making it look good but Julia encouraged me to just try it because she believed I could. I trusted her and I'm so glad I did because that drawing turned out amazing. It's one of my favorite pieces to this day. I'm so grateful for everything Julia has done for me. Thank you for believing in me and helping me grow. You've made such a big difference in my life. Truly the best teacher and friend I could ever ask for. I love you so much Julia.

The kids feel proud of their accomplishment. For me, however, this is overshadowed by the very strict policies. You pay for the entire year up front, so you want to make sure your kid will want to do the entire year. The first year we went here, this worked out OK. However, the second year my 7 yr old was not enjoying the class at all--to the point she would leave the class early crying. We were a couple months in at this point (but before winter break or the beginning of performance dance practices). We were told that we could leave the class but would not be entitled to any refund of the tuition (more than half the year at that point). We were also not allowed to try out another class to see if we could find one my child would like better. I felt this was extraordinarily rigid for a 7 year old. To not even work with a family to try and find a better fit in dance class says to me they are not concerned with the dancer's experience. Our only options were to eat the half year tuition, or force our child to continue a class she really did not like. Perhaps this policy is OK for older kids who know what activities they like, but for younger children I find it inappropriate. Parents should also be aware that the kids are required to wear specific clothing to all practices, so there is an additional cost as you need to order specific dance leotards, tights, shoes, etc.

This year (2011) the theme was "Around the World." The 90 minute show had 33 numbers running 3 minutes or less. The teachers always do a great job of teaching, creating the choreography, selecting the beautiful costumes, & letting the kids shine. Each year the best performances vary. 3 years ago, 3 young men tap dancers were just phenomenal. This year the ballet & modern/contemporary numbers were my favorites. A tall angular young man was especially wonderful to watch...smooth, graceful, strong, rhythmic...better than many professionals I have seen! I am often surprised by the abilities of children who do not have traditional willowy dancer shapes. This year the bigger girls really excelled in the modern & ballet numbers. Their technique, movement, & energy were a pleasure to watch. The younger children are a treat. They often miss something & their reactions are so cute & funny. This year when another dancer stood on her spot on the stage 1 little girl gently pushed the other toward her proper spot, pointed, & mouthed..."you go there!" The price was reasonable...Less than $30 for middle range seats. Much less than what we last paid for a seat at the opera.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are (indeed) Dead…read more Deader than a doornail and you missed them. Sorry folks, Better luck next time. Try planning ahead. The last performance of this Tom Stoppard play was on Sunday afternoon in SFSU's Little Theatre. Rosencrantz/Guildenstern played to an enthusiastic audience with few remaining seats in the house. Brennan Cook was memorable in his role as "The Player" while Celeste Conowitch and Anthony Agresti played the title roles delightfully. Ms. Conowitch was particularily effective in the male role of Rosencrantz.. Although she never stepped our of character, she nonetheless brought a distinct feminine sensibility to what could have been a jaunty "old boys" romp through Stoppard's play about two characters from Shakespeare's "Hamlet." Truly inspirational casting! I'm not a drama critic so I won't try to finesse an analysis of the performance. But, for my money the whole production was professional. In fact, I kept looking at the program for an indication that various actors were appearing with permission from Actor's Equity. Nope...students, all. Good show, directors Jo Tomalin and John Wilson! The casting, lighting, costuming, acting, directing and setting were on a par with a play that you might see at ACT. But, the ticket price was not. it was...drum roll, please.......... $10.00. No typo. Ten dollars. So....... Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. But other SF Theatre Arts Department productions are right around the corner. Three more productions make up the 2011-2012 academic season. Grab your tickets as soon as you can. You'll enjoy the performances as much as I did. Trust me on this. Would a little old librarian lie to you? Hooha! Hie thee to the theatre.............. Grab your tickets soon.
