I brought a family…read moreheirloom, a simple wooden chest handmade by my great-grandfather in the early 1900s, to The Barn on 26 because their website stated they restore both simple and elaborate antique pieces. The chest needed only basic refinishing and the installation of a hasp latch. We later learned that all restoration work is outsourced to a third party. What should have been a straightforward project took more than eight months and ultimately left the chest in worse condition than when we brought it in. After bringing it home the first time we discovered that the hinge screws protruded into the interior, scratching the wooden drawers whenever they were removed. We returned the chest for repair. When we received it back the second time, we found the newly installed latch had been misaligned, causing it to chip the original wood every time it was opened and closed. When I brought it back a third time, the proposed solution was to cut a notch into the original wood rather than correctly reposition the latch. I declined and instead requested that the latch be removed and the damage repaired. After several more months and three follow-up phone calls, we finally got it back. Although the latch had been removed, the repairs were disappointing. The screw holes were unevenly plugged, the wood plugs did not match the surrounding finish, visible glue remained, and the hardware had left permanent indentations and discoloration in the wood. When I expressed my concerns, the owner told me to find someone else to fix it. We paid nearly $900 for what should have been a simple refinishing job with the addition of a latch, but instead received a permanently damaged family heirloom. While the refinished surface itself was acceptable, the hardware installation, the subsequent repair attempts, and the overall attention to detail fell well below our expectations. I cannot recommend The Barn on 26 for restoration work requiring precision, craftsmanship, or the careful preservation of an antique or sentimental piece.

They picked it up with the snowblower cab on, and brought it in to…read morebe fixed, which it was in short order, and I stopped by after paying the bill, and the cab was intact. They returned it, cab in pieces, with a 3 missing fiberglass rods to hold the shape of the cab. There was no reason that it needed to be removed from the blower, and if so, just take off the assembly, or they could have mentioned it on pickup, and I would have removed the cab (4 set screws).

They did the job, but they knocked over about 5 feet of stone wall and just left it there. My plumbing backed up a few months later; I called them and they said they "may have" crushed the pipe from the house to the septic tank by driving their equipment on it. They didn't seem surprised at all, like they knew they had crushed it and were hoping I wouldn't call them back. At least they fixed it for free a week later. I will do septic work myself with a teaspoon before I call these hacks again.

Roots had invaded the pipe going from my house to the septic tank. A crew showed up less than a…read moreweek after I called. They dug up and replaced the pipe and increased the pitch for better flow. They got rid of the roots and installed a manhole to the tank, so I'd never have to dig it up again. They pumped out the tank while they were at it. The crew worked within inches of the backyard birdbath, garden and bird feeders without disturbing so much as a single flower. When they were finished, they raked out the excavator tracks, leveled and seeded the lawn. The cost was on the low side of a very fair estimate. I surmise that they are just plain good at what they do, and hence are more efficient than the competition. They were polite, courteous and caring. None better.
