The outboard was only a 50 however, but with only 2 adults and 2 children on board it wasn't terribly underpowered. Pricing was competitive for the area. The marina was a bit tight but nothing I haven't seen before. There is very little traffic around their cove which makes for a quick departure and docking. I like that it's at the end of the lake which gives you an opportunity to do a full stretch without a lot of backtracking. The store was fully stocked with bait and tackle. This was one of the best boat rental experiences I've had in years and I would absolutely use them again.

I like to go for the fishing boat with motor because I don't want to paddle or pay too much but there are different options depending on what your doing. I would have preferred to make a reservation but the rentals are on first come, first serve basis so make sure you get there early. I wasn't sure how long I wanted the boat for so they let me book 2 hours and then settle up when I got back. I was a little nervous because the boat didn't tell me how deep the water was beneath me, but we didn't get stuck so it's all good. I was happy I brought my radio. I did get lost a little but was able to pull up a map on my phone. They have a lot of fishing equipment for you to buy as well. I had to take a "safety course" to be able to rent the boat but it didn't take long and wasn't a big deal. They didn't even give me a hard time about crashing into the wall on my way out. The steering took a little to get used to, especially in reverse. The first time I was here, I dropped the anchor in the water but it wasn't tied to the boat so it just dropped to the bottom.

Mother Nature did most of the heavy lifting (the lake, the land, the sky) and the weather cooperated as well.  The residents up this way made sure our views were enviable, thanks to all the lovely houses and 'toys' (boats, docks, slides) we got to marvel at while putt-putting all along the water for (about) two hours. The vessel (Miss Lotta) was very cool (two levels), very clean, and the entire staff (from bow to stern) were incredible. The one element of the day that wasn't successful?  The food. Bland pasta, boring veggies, okay salad, a chicken dish that had more than a few other people around us all whispering, "That wasn't very good, right?" - the only element that got rave reviews at our table was the pork chop. (They had a sign which mentioned the food was catered by The Windlass - which has always been a 5-star visit the few times we've been there, too.) Near the end we had a plate of desserts (evenly split between a chocolate brownie and a banana one) along with (a bland) coffee - and that kinda-sorta saved the day (especially that banana one). (Alcoholic) drinks were not included and they didn't get high marks at our table, either. We would definitely book another cruise in the future (they had TV screens on a loop showing all the various ideas/options/holidays available) even if we'd be hesitant about the food.

Did you know that Lake Hopatcong is NJ's largest freshwater lake?…read more And did you also know that there's a great little place on the lake that lets you rent all sorts of strange inventions like a 'pedalboard' and a 'hydrobike' (along with the classics like kayaks and paddleboards) - so you can cruise along the lake, get a bit of exercise, fill those lungs with fresh air and more importantly... work up an appetite (so you can hit The Windlass right after)? I tell you it's true. All true. There were six of us (celebrating a birthday) - 5 on hydrobikes, 1 on a pedalboard. The lake is drop dead gorgeous and we went when it was still early and a bit overcast so it wasn't too crowded with boats and jet-skis and the like. (Waves/wakes from other boats can really dampen your own fun... so that stuff matters a bit.) But I gotta be honest: it was a lot of work. Unlike a kayak where you might get a nice 'bite' with your oar and can coast a bit... the bike is akin to being pneumatic (you stop pedaling and you almost immediately come to a halt as well). And those seats? They are not comfortable at all. Sore dupas all around (the following day as well, actually). But we all had a great time. The crew (Patty and Joe, I believe) were really cool, total professionals, and we always felt like we were safe as well having a great time exploring some of the lake and adjoining islands and whatnot. (We would definitely return in the future but would lean towards a kayak and not do the bikes again.) Wear sunblock, bring water, not sure if it was just me but my right foot was pretty soaked by the end whereas my left was dry (so you'd be better off wearing an old ratty pair of sneakers, regardless). Post-pedal was The Windlass (excellent) as well as some mini-golf (also excellent). Lots to do in this lovely part of Jersey. (But it'll cost ya!)

A cousin of mine tried the hydrobikes and lived it, so I thought I would give it a try. I asked a…read morefriend to come with me and he said it looked like a pain in the ass. I made a reservation online. Patty was so friendly and made it a great time! She let me use some sun block and fill up my reusable cup at their water fountain. She told me that I would probably like the standup paddle board better because it had better maneuverability. I took her advice. It was a lot of excise and fun as we rode around and she told me about the history and pointed out different areas around the lake. We even picked up some trash from inside the lake and it made me happy to know that there are good people out there who are also passionate about the environment. It was hot and I "accidentally" fell in and got to enjoy the water a little bit. Patty also gave me restaurant and hiking recommendations around the area and even took a picture of me. You may be able to call and make a same day appointment, but online will only allow the following day. I don't think it's with bringing or risking losing your camera or phone out on the lake, there isn't anything really photo worthy.

I remember…read moreswimming to this dock in the middle of the night to just be able to jump off of the overhead walkway that allows boats to pass under it and enter the marine slips. When visiting & boating on Lake Hopatcong based on those memories I always suggest visiting Barnes Brothers for gas. The gas here for boats on the lake is reasonable priced and of course like any other spot in New Jersey it is illegal to pump your own gas, not sure why this is still a law but it is. If your boat needs works Barnes Brother has got you covered. When winter comes along everyone is required to pull their boats from the water and for good reason because they will be destroyed. If you happen to own a boat and looking for a group of dedicated individuals to winterize your boat and store it safely until the ice melts and the grass starts turning green look no further than Barnes Brothers. If you are looking for a tow rope to tow wake boarders, knee boarders, water skiers, tubers, simply looking for marine line or life vest / preservers once again Barnes Brothers has got you covered. As they say in the boating word boat stands for (Bust Out Another Thousand). I say that in fun because my father has owned boats from my earliest memories and always taught me the importance of water safety & respect for all waterways. It is always nice to visit places you visited as a child. Just seeing the sign that reads Barnes Brothers truly brings me back in time. If you ever happen to visiting New Jersey make sure you pay a visit to Lake Hopatcong, while visiting Lake Hopatcong make sure you visit this spot, you will truly see a part of history!!!
