Green Fresh Supermarket - Hot Food section

The produce is right at the entrance where we picked up a coconut and kumquat (which is a citrus but completely edible, peel and all). It was so much fun browsing the snacks and chips. While I didn't purchase any, the condiment aisle was heaven and they has everything from vinegars to oils. They have so many frozen food items like dumplings, korean dogs (filled with cheese), and ice creams. I was most excited to check out the bakery but there was not much of a selection. Fellow yelper, the amazing, Jennifer.P sums up the bakery section very well. The prepared food section was slim the night we went, and it looked like they were out of a lot of items. The refrigerated section was also sparse and maybe they did not have time to stock it up after the weekend (we went on a Monday evening around 7pm). I loved that they had plenty of vegetarian items like veggie jerky found in the chips aisle, and puffed tofu in the refrigerated aisle. While T&T blows it out of the water in terms of prepared items and their bakery, Green Fresh has some amazing shelf stable hard to find items.

The Long Version: I've been awaiting the opening of this grocery store ever since I saw the sign go up back in March of 2024. Their grand opening was October 19, 2024. I went the day after and have been back once since then. I've been to the Green Fresh on McArthur Ave and in fact have been to the original location when it was still on Selkirk St before it moved to McArthur. It was dingy and not the cleanest when it was on Selkirk, but when it moved to McArthur it cleaned up its act and became a place that was much more enjoyable to shop at. This second location on Merivale is even better. So big, bright and clean. I enjoyed looking at their chips and candies, lol. They also have hot foods and prepared sushi. They have a "Cake" section, but it's not a bakery with traditional cakes. It's just some packaged Swiss Rolls-type cakes and I think packaged mini Japanese-style cheesecakes. Their bakery section is all prepackaged items as well, mostly Filipino items like pandesal and also bread from Grey Matlock Bakery (Nigerian breads - not Asian at all, but hey I embrace inclusivity, lol). Their hot foods section has mostly Chinese food and some Indian food (samosas and I think I saw some pakoras as well). It's by the weight and you serve yourself then they weigh it and you pay at the prepared foods counter. The seafood section is in a separate room, so it really cuts down on the smell. In fact, I didn't notice any fish smell while in the store (I did not enter the "seafood room."). Service was satisfactory. Not super friendly, but not rude. Just neutral. The grocery store is where the Bad Boy Furniture used to be. It was a Future Shop before that. And for a few Halloween seasons it was a Spirit Halloween. There's lots of free parking in the parking lot out front. (198)

On the days that I went it was all around noon and they have been able to pile the hot bar up with food. The prices aren't as steep as I expected BUT the purple desert soup thing is a little on the expensive side. A meal with a Turon (plantain fried in a crispy wrapper and drizzled with molasses) would run you about $12 and you will be FULL. They have all the usual Filipino fare but I was quite surprised to see that they never had any adobo pork or chicken on the days that I went. They have the rice and pancit everyday and occasionally put out the palabok. Now for the HaloHalo .....yes yes and YES. It missing the leche flan but is really REALLY good and certainly hits the spot. If you're craving some Filipino and are in the carling area ....give this place a try. Parking is a little scarce but is available at the back.

The Long Version: I had been to the Scottish and Irish Store out in Bells Corners but didn't know this one existed until I saw it while dropping off my husband at Funhaven to spend a few hours with a friend of his and the friend's kids. We got there early and the friend hadn't arrived yet, so that gave us the opportunity to poke around the store. There are 2 floors, with food being on the first floor and clothes, decor and other non-food items on the second floor. I was only interested in the food, lol, so didn't go up to the second floor. They had lots of snacks, my favourite type of food. Haha. They had chips/crisps, cookies/biscuits, candies, chocolates, etc. They also had lots of sodas and other drinks like juices. They had a clearance section where they marked down items that were nearing or past their best before dates. This is where I shopped since I found the regular prices a bit on the high side. I picked up some chips for my husband (Lamb and Rosemary flavoured ones and Cheese and Onion flavoured ones) and a bag of Monster Munch for us to share (Pickled Onions flavour). No bakery section with fresh baked goods, but they have frozen baked goods. Staff were pleasant. I chatted with the cashier and discovered they actually closed down their Bells Corners location. Good to know, lol. I feel this location on Baxter is more hidden, but hopefully they have established enough of a customer base that they'll be ok. Parking on the weekends (and I assume also when kids are not in school, like the summers, March Break, and PD Days) is epic since it's in the same complex as Funhaven. And kids were running around freely, at least that's what I saw when I was there. Otherwise, there's free parking in the complex. Review #63 (2025)

Staff were friendly & offered help as well. Prices are very fair & clearly displayed with the items. They have a loyalty program to collect points so it'll be handy if you become a frequent shopper. Highly recommend!

I made a mental note to return sometime to check it out. When I got home I did some internet searching and discovered that they opened around December 2020, so they are relatively new. As the name suggests, it's an Indian Supermarket. It's not that large, but bigger than a convenience store. They sell some frozen foods, refrigerated foods, shelf-stable foods, and some prepared snacks and desserts (no prepared meals). No fresh produce nor fresh meats. Almost all of their items are imported from India. I picked up a Butter Chicken mix ($1.49) and an instant Kheer package ($2.79). As well as some prepared snacks: 2 vegetarian samosas ($0.79 each), a Manchurian puff ($2.29) and a pizza puff ($2.29). I loved that they had Falooda in bottles. Unfortunately they contained ingredients that I can't have, so I had to pass on them :( Their selection of spices and mixes was great. As was their selection of different types of flours, grains and pulses. However, I was disappointed with their selection of teas, cookies, and candies. The samosas and puffs were ok, but nothing special in my opinion. The samosas were particularly oily/greasy. The filling was mostly potatoes with some peas. They only had vegetarian samosas and this was their only variety. The puffs had minimal filling. I don't know what was supposed to be in the Manchurian puff but it just tasted like spices and dough. The pizza puff tasted like it was filled with just tomato sauce and spices, I didn't taste any cheese. They had Indian desserts like barfi. And also some cake slices. The cakes were advertised as egg-less, so good for those with egg allergies. Service was neutral. The supermarket is in the Emerald Plaza and is right next to Chatime. Lots of free parking.

It was a tiny bit soggy by the time we drove home but still really good. I like the sauce a lot, and the portion is great for the price. You can order ahead or pick from the prepared food on the right of the cashier. I only wish the sweet and spicy sauce was spicier (it was very very mild to us) but they recently added a new soy & chili flavour that can scale up on the spice. It wasn't greasy and probably one of the better places for KFC by Ottawa standards. TIP: if you're getting take out and worried about the sauce making the chicken soft while you drive home, you can ask for the sauce on the side! They have plenty of Korean ingredients, snacks, noodles and a killer homemade kimchi that I believe is freshest on Fridays. There isn't much fresh produce but they do have lots of meats. Prices are a bit higher here but they're well stocked. The location is very clean and the staff are friendly. There's only street parking in front of the store but you can park in the lot across the street where the LCBO is.

I also bought a 50g bag of dried seaweed for $3.69. All items were imported from South Korea. There's lots of free parking in the plaza parking lot.

The Long Version: This small grocery store in Orleans markets itself as a Pakistani, Indian and Mediterranean market. It just opened up in August 2025 where Istanbul Food Mart used to be on Des Epinettes. I didn't even know the Istanbul Food Mart closed, but my brother who lives in the area told me about it. And when I drove by I saw a sign with a picture of samosas and knew I had to check it out, lol. My mom loves samosas, so when I came to visit her (she also lives near the store) I asked her if she wanted to check out the store together, and of course she was game. They did indeed have samosas. The big regular type and the smaller ones made with phyllo pastry. The big ones were vegetarian and $1.50 each. The smaller ones were chicken and $0.75 each. We got a big one and 3 small ones. They also had Indian sweets such as Barfi, Ladoo, Jelebi, Gulab Jamun and Rasgulla, sold by the weight. I don't know all the names but we ended up getting 4 different types to try. You can see my photo. The store has lots of spices, sauces and mixes. As well as imported drinks and snacks (my favourite, lol). The store is neatly organized. There's also an area at the front with tables and chairs where you can sit to enjoy some food or drink. We had the chance to speak with Ali himself and he was very friendly and welcoming. He told us his plans to expand their menu. They will be selling shawarma. He's also thinking of items like samosa chaat. And maybe some fusion poutine like curry poutine, and likely regular poutine too, lol. I think if they expanded their menu, their eat-in area would be a great place to have a snack or meal. It's by the front, which is all windows, so feels like you're in a solarium. The space is very lovely, and surprisingly so since it's inside a grocery store, lol. I liked how Ali was very genuine. When my mom asked if they will be selling big meat samosas, he said she's the third person to ask him that, so they will likely do so in the future. When I asked him if they will be selling baked samosas, he said I'm the only person who's ever asked that and he thinks baked samosas will likely not sell. Lol. I appreciate honesty! And I get it, you need to sell what people will buy ;) (As an aside, my mom said to me, "Jennifer, people want to eat deep-fried delicious things, not baked healthy alternatives like you do!") Fair! Haha. Ali also told us when his sign at the corner advertising samosas was handwritten no one came in looking for samosas but after he got a sign with a picture of samosas on it people started coming in asking for samosas, lol. The samosas were delicious. The big vegetarian one was filled with potatoes, peas and spices. It was spicy! Spicier than most samosas I've had and I loved it. The flavour was also unique. It was more complex and interesting than other samosas I've had. The small samosas were also good, but pale in comparison to the big one in flavour. My parents enjoyed the Indian sweets. They were too sweet for my tastes, but I already knew this because most desserts are too sweet for my liking, lol. The one with a carrot halwa base was the least sweet and the most enjoyable to me. Anyway, I'm really excited to see how this store evolves. I'll be stopping by again with my mom to try their new items. It's in a little plaza so there's free parking in the shared parking lot with other businesses in the plaza. Review #157 (2025)
