Kmart - Basics and women's clothing based on ground floor. Bargain basic tops for only $6-7!

You know when something is so bad for you that you can't help but want it more? Like…read morechocolate...well now I'd put Kmart into that little shopping basket. Yes it is just another chain store full of stuff you don't need but I am in a love/hate relationship with this Kmart. The layout is clever. Bloody annoying and sneaky like IKEA - but gosh it's clever. - You can't see over any isle so you have to hunt through the maze of gigantic displays. - They put women's bargain clothing (tops starting at $4) at the entrance. Bright colourful displays that make you think "yes I should start wearing more of this tangerine or fluoro blue in my life." - The store is also double storey so you feel like you are in a luxurious department store that has bargain basement prices. And finally the prices are amazing. You know that when you buy a $4 t-shirt it will last you one season and be 2 sizes bigger after a couple of washes. But hey what the hell it's only $4 right? Consumerism at its best. It is also refreshing to see a good homewares and toy store based in the mall with a really good range of items - something I was complaining about as I trawled the mall just 2 months ago unsuccessfully looking for a present for a 3 year old. Well done Kmart your rebrand is bringing you back into the naughties...you're so bad, it's good.

2/12/2007 "Forget" almost rhymes with "Target"…read more Can you serve me? When all your children grow up and leave for University, will you adopt me as your new child? If the answer is no to the above, I will forget you Target. Just joking, I did remember something about you. You have a generous sale for underwear. But you have non-existent service. I don't see anyone around that can help me. So I may not forget you, after all. I like your website though. Facts: The Target story began in 1926 when two men George Lindsay and Alex McKenzie opened a drapery store in Geelong, Victoria, Australia, after signing a partnership the previous year. The store primarily sold dress fabrics, manchester and furnishings. Target now offers customers a range of: fashionable women's, men's and children's clothing, underwear, footwear, cosmetics, fragrances, and accessories; the latest designs in homewares, including manchester, bed linen, electrical appliances and décor; and a full range of toys, games and entertainment - all under one roof! So you better be quick! Remember: their underwear won't last forever.

It is quite impressive when a self-confessed 'cheap' store makes the effort to renovate so it doesn't actually *look* so cheap - and this one looks great. Very easy to navigate and well signed (I could see where the fitting rooms were easily - unlike other department stores). I do think they needed more staff on the registers during the lunchtime peak period, but the line still moved pretty quickly. I felt like I was in a bank, with the big screens telling us that 'register 6 is free' - bizarre, but still impressive ;)

DJ's: an endangered species from the mono-lithic period where shopping for couture pieces and…read morespending 3 hours on a Sunday in one air-conditioned department store was "a done thing." Lost in the wilderness, this department store has quickly dwindled in life and breadth of product thanks to encroaching online shopping and competitive, low cost, reasonable quality department stores capturing their consumers. You can still find the rare brand name watch, pair of shoes on sale or makeup in store at a fair price and I love still wandering through the powder puff girls and clouds of perfume on the ground floor (where else can you get such an experience). However, the range, value and poor internal workings of the place mean that it is becoming a forgotten species. This DJs in particular has lost its way, shutting down their fine dining food court and imported produce section and putting on about 1 staff member for every 100 customers so you can never find a damn sales person when you need one (or they have no interest in serving you). Displays are cluttered and floors have been crammed with so many brands you can get in their original outlets or stores that the quality and health of the David Jones "premium brand department store" is lost. The only way I can see this species being brought back from near extinction is to re-instate and connect a fine dining food court to DJ's, add in fancy change rooms, high quality service, cut half their range so high end brands (that you can't get anywhere else) are available to touch and feel and completely refit the place to feel like one of those luxe shopping centres you get in Harrods, Dubai or HK. I hope to see the "day of old" department store return, but first it has to lift it's game.

While the service is ok and the products are alright, I think it's a sad indictment on what we see as good service these days when we expect dodgy service and are almost surprised when we don't receive it. I will admit the service is better than what you'll get in many places but I have a couple of really bad DJ's experiences. I have stood in the electrical department for longer than 30 minutes on two separate occasions waiting for someone to take my money so I could take home a new plasma tv. One guy approached me and told me he didn't deal with the particular brand I was after so he'd get someone else to help me. No-one came! A tip for you ... David Jones will price match so don't be fooled by the fact they seem more expensive than other places. They are as keen to make a sale as the next guy. Apologies for being a negative Nora but I just felt this page needed some balance.

Myer in Rundle is pretty big, and usually pretty busy (especially around xmas and other holidays that require present buying). I have found some fantastic bargains during their end of season and boxing day sales (including a scanpan set for 70% off. Bargain!). I've also had to use their gift registry a few times for weddings over the years, and I've always found that really smooth. I go in, grab the list, pick a present and I'm done! I don't need to stress about what to get. The staff here are pretty helpful. They offer their help and leave me to browse.

It works out you get around 1% of your purchases back in Myer gift cards, which means you can easily earn around $200/year to spend at Myer. While this sounds good, recently I have noticed a problem, Myer just isn't competitive on price. Frequently I have asked them to price match (as per their rather large signs) but they have refused to do so, claiming that their competitors are selling below their cost price. It isn't even a small difference, I have frequently found them to be 20% more expensive than other retailers in the city (well, except for DJs). The end result is that I end up with a wallet so thick with gift cards that placing it in my back pocket gives me posture issues when seated. This is despite their near constant sales (start of season/mid season/end of season for every damned season). Occasionally there will be a sale that suddenly makes them competitive on something I actually want, but actually paying sticker price gives me a feeling similar to when I emailed a nice Nigerian man my bank details so I could claim my lost great uncle's fortune.

You ask why not just make it a $2 shop and return to the 90's prices of $2 everything in store? Well not even Cheap As Chips can do merch at $2 anymore and these guys had to have a point of difference right? Oh yes and I should also pre-warn you the name of this store is incredibly deceiving...unless you consider tupperware, nail polish, baskets, costumes and bath sponges as fashion items this place does not live up to its name. The other deception? Not EVERYTHING in the store is $2.80. Luckily when I walked in I walked into the left hand side of the store (which is the $2.80 part of the store). The right hand side of the store has any product costing above $2.80 in it! So if you are looking for kawaii costumes and random storage crap and beauty related items that you can't read the ingredients of then this place is for you. Customer service is hit and miss - sometimes it's terrible but the last time I was there the sales assistant was extremely helpful!
