Pipe broke in the wall. Took them months to fix. When I called them about it, they called me a liar. So I left. They never replaced the carpet after the water leak. I'm sure there is a lot of mold in there. Will never recommend this terrible company to anybody. They should be put out of business. read more

Moriarty may be nice in the beginning, but later on, they reveal their true colors as a horrible housing company. When I first moved in, my "landlady" did the initial check-in of the apartment--couple of burnt-out bulbs, some nails here and there, some cracked walls, and other small, minor problems. I was told, that someone would come and fix-up all these minor issues, but, no one EVER did. What's more fun is that when I moved out, I WAS BLAMED FOR ALL THE MINOR PROBLEMS, AND charged for them! Sure, you can call them to fix a problem, but, don't expect a miracle. Last winter, it was really cold in the apartment, and I lived on the top floor. Turns out, the heater stopped working. It was fixed THREE DAYS after I called, but, only went out the next week. Eventually, I bought a space heater instead. Oh, there was that one time I complained that a window wouldn't shut, and asked someone to fix it. When I came back from school, my apartment door was WIDE OPEN, and the company's handyman was already in my room "trying" to fix the window...no one called me or noticed me or anything. Just some random guy in my place, despite that I had locked the door...should of called the police. (P.S., I was also "dinged" for the window problem, even though I had told them about it) But, what puts the cherry on top is how they weaseled their way into charging me an extra month of rent, because according to the lease contract, they need "a written consent of vacancy 30 days before leaving". I went in one day to pay rent, and talked to my landlady and told her when I would be moving out. "Okay, that's fine," she said. Three days later, she calls me to tell me that since I never "wrote" her a letter, I have to pay an extra month, despite not telling the same day I told her the date of moving out (which was "24 days" before vacating). And get this, they pulled this stunt to everyone in the building, therefore getting an extra month's rent out of everyone. Normally, they will call if there is an issue with the rent check, but when it came to the move-out procedure, they only sent a letter and never called, asking when I was planning to move-out. Hm...sounds legit, no? Guess how they make that extra $$$? Bingo. And when it came to refunding my original deposit, I was charged an extra $45. ($20 for a "service" charge and $25 for "cleaning" despite spending a week cleaning out the apartment myself). And remembered all those small, minor problems I mentioned in the beginning when I first moved in? These same minor things were put down on my "check-out" sheet, as well as comments such as "dirty bathroom fan". How the hell am I suppose to pull out the fan, when it was suppose to be done before I even moved in? Do you know how hard it is to keep black mold from forming (which can be easily done due to poor ventilation in the bathroom)? Overall, I seriously do not recommend Moriarty Rentals. They are very conniving and will find many ways to get some extra money out of you, one way or another. They are very slow at fixing problems, and if you call for help, chances are the help they send won't even fix the problem nor let you know they're arriving. The place I lived at (408 Harvey Dunn Street complex) was extremely overpriced...it should be around $500 or less, instead of $660. Especially during the summer, since using the AC in the apartment is pointless because of the apartment layout and numerous leaks of air in the frames of windows/doors (extra fun in winter cold). I'd recommend Mills Property waaaay more than Moriarty even though I don't really like Mills either. But, if you have no other choice and are stuck with Moriarty, here's what you should do: 1) when you first move in, take pictures of everything, even small "minor" problems in the apartment (nail holes, scratches, etc.) 2) If something is not working or you have an apartment-related issue, call them. If they do nothing about the next day, call again. If still nothing, repeat. If after the third time and still nothing, go to the office, and tell them in person. If all else fails, go to their office and tell that they are not keeping the apartment in the agreed-upon condition, therefore, the lease contract may be broken on their fault, and if needed, call a lawyer or talk to the free counselors on campus. (I talked to a guy on campus about the heating issues, only to learn that I could of actually called Moriarty out on their problem and could of been able to move out without penalty AND with my deposit refund). 3) Follow every "rule" in their contract, especially the 30-day move-out procedure. THAT is where they will try to get you, as well as an extra month of rent. read more
