We rented an apartment/townhome in Madison, SD. The apartment is very nice and updated. The manager was very nice but don't let that fool you. First off when we walked through to look at the apartment I was told that there was a water softener and a reverse osmosis included. AFTER we moved in we were told we had to pay extra for the water softener per month and that there no reverse osmosis hooked up to the faucet for drinking water! The walls are so thin you can hear the neighbors talk, baby next door crying and their cabinets in the kitchen close. Also, it's a non-smoking facility but the neighborhoods smoked next door. We could not use our second bedroom all winter long even after advising management several times, we had to close that room off and use multiple air purifiers. I advised management several times and nothing was done. We felt like you had to whisper the entire time we lived there. Be advised that When you move out you're required to leave the electricity on until the next tenant moves in. It's been 10 days past the date that we were told that the new tenant was to move in. We tried calling Thursday but when you try to call management their voicemail is full. The corporate office says they don't have any information but she will call back. She called back on Friday at 5 pm and left a message to us to call her back, tried but she was gone for the week. It is Monday tried to call her back but again voicemail is full, still have not heard back from her and called corporate office NO RESPONSE. It has now been a month since we moved out but have not been advised the date we take electricity out of our name for the unit. We have no way of knowing if the new tenant moved in or if the cleaning crew left the AC on! Very unprofessional. read more

Don't expect good service, it took them 2 weeks to replace a bathroom facet handle, leaking the entire time. On a Monday night around 3:30PM I discovered the hot water was out in the entire building, called the main number and no answer. Called the 24 Hr line and they said it wasn't an emergency, we got hot water back on 24Hrs later. Found out is was a breaker that had tripped. Their snow removal is a joke, I hope you have a shovel to dig yourself out. Our site manager quit and it took them weeks before anyone found out. Tried to get someone to do a walk through, took almost 2 weeks. Oh and they keep your deposit for 45 days after they check you out, then you find out they charge you for stuff and deduct it form the deposit. I was charged for new drip pans for the stove when we moved out, they were jacked up when I moved in. I was told the place was spotless................. read more

Mills Property took over management of my apartment building one month ago. I had lived in this building for almost a full year and never had any problems or complaints....that is until Mills Property took over. They have been doing remodeling almost every day which is extremely loud and wakes me up every morning. They are constantly having the water turned off without informing me when this is going to be happening making it very difficult to even get a shower in before work. Our apartment building had seating in the form of couches on the front porch prior to Mills taking over. The first day they removed all seating, tables, and other items that were on the porch without asking or telling any of the tenants they were going to do this. Also on the porch was property of another tenant that I know. Said property was also removed and has yet to be returned. The large front yard of the building had many flowers and plants that were very nice but have since been either removed or not maintained in any way. Overall, since the Mills Property take over of the building it has been absolutely awful. I will never rent from them again and I urge anyone looking at apartments in Brookings to look elsewhere. I have a rental property in Brookings not under management by Mills, and have continually struggled to find quality, trustworthy, economical contractors and handymen for the things that go wrong at my house. I called Mills Property Management Maintenance division (yes, they will service properties not owned by them!), and received a prompt and reasonable quote. The work was completed quickly and efficiently, and even though I am out-of-town payment was easily arranged. Though I've only needed to use them once so far, Mills Property Management Home Maintenance seems to be a great solution for those who need this type of service for their home or rentals. I only hope this review doesn't reveal their secret and provide too much competition from too many others!! read more
