Grater Goods - Cheeses prepared for our tasting

It's probably a good thing I live 40 minutes away from Grater Goods, because if I lived too close…read moremy diet would become exclusively cheese. I finally visited for the first (and not the last) time recently for a private tasting event with fellow folks from the Junior League. The two women working -- including Jennifer, the owner -- were easy to talk with and super informative about the four cheeses they served us, which ranged from a Brie to a Comte. I love cheese. I love expensive, funky cheese, and I also love cheap, mild cheese (and everything in between). But I know enough about cheese -- well, I've eaten enough cheese, at least -- to tell these were excellent cheeses provided by someone who really wants locals to enjoy them. The shop itself is lovely, carrying not just cheeses but some meats and plenty of other selections you may want for a charcuterie board (or your own midnight snack)...spreads, honeys, crackers, and more. They also have some French butters, ready-to-beat baguettes, and even some homewares like beautiful wooden service items, mini fondue pots, and cheese slicers. This would be an excellent place to stop in for a housewarming gift, even if you're not looking to gift something edible. But also, consider gifting something edible. Who doesn't want good cheese? And I haven't taken advantage of it yet, but I will soon: the shop offers trays and boards ranging from "snack for 2" to "large party" if you give them notice. Also, "snack for 2" might become my new go-to lunch.

What a great find! When we walked in, we happened to arrive during a wine tasting--now I'm excited…read moreto come back for one on an upcoming Friday. The owner greeted us warmly and gave excellent cheese recommendations based on what we like and what we've tried before. She even offered to save our order under our phone number so we could easily remember it next time (or not have to remember at all!). The shop has more than just cheese, too: there are jams, pickles, and other fun specialty items. It's such a cute spot, and I can't wait to go back.

Daily Seafood Market - Blue crabs

Daily Seafood Market absolutely lives up to the hype. I had seen the viral videos floating around…read moreand honestly wondered if it was exaggerated -- it's not. The videos are accurate. The portions are HUGE and they do not skimp on anything. Yes, there was a long line, but I truly didn't mind waiting because once I got my food, I understood why. The garlic crabs were seasoned perfectly and packed with flavor. The seafood was fresh and well worth standing in line. If you're debating whether it's worth the hype, it is. Come hungry and be prepared to wait -- but trust me, it's worth it.

This now viral seafood market with a friendly staff is well known for its tall stacks of garlic…read morecrabs. As a family of seafood lovers who have our favorite garlic tray spots but continue to branch out, it was time for us to try this restaurant. Garlic trays are a Jacksonville staple that can be recognized by their clusters of snow or blue crabs smothered in a butter adjacent substance and adorned with classic crab boil seasonings like old Bay, Cajun spice, lemon pepper, garlic powder, and a sprinkling of parsley. Daily Seafood Market is infamous for the way that they stack a visibly large quantity of crabs into a tray (vs putting them in an aluminum pan that would fit them), which gives the customer a sense of abundance while enjoying an already indulgent treat. We had the blue garlic crab tray which comes in small, medium, or jumbo. Unlike most seafood establishments that have garlic trays that we've explored before, the sizes are not a reference to the size of the crabs, but a reference to the serving size and the amount of crabs... this is an important difference if your priority is enjoying an abundance of the sweet crab meat vs a tactile experience of cracking a bunch of crab shells. We ordered the large, which was an extremely generous portion of crabs, but I have to reemphasize that is the quantity not the size of crabs. Acknowledging that it is December and blue crabs are truly a warm water delight, the majority of what amount to about 25 crabs in the $60 large tray are what would be sold as "smalls," or "lights," at other seafood spots. It's truly a matter of preference - I'd rather have two or three meaty, jumbo blue crabs in one sitting rather than exceeding my daily recommended sodium intake eating half of a large tray (so 10-13 widdle crabs). I think the large and jumbo orders are great for pedestrian crab consumers eating them socially like crawfish. Also unique to this establishment - they season the crabs when they boil them, so I recommend getting your butter seasoned on the side. They are more salt than garlic. We will visit again for fried seafood. Their line is out the door every day, so your mileage may vary based on your preferences.

I've gone my entire teenaged and adult life ordering maybe 3 burgers over a couple of decades, now…read moreI wake up thinking about the texture, taste, thickness, seasoning and freshness of the beef at Pinegrove Market and Deli! My go-to is the Hoss burger, because I love the onion rings and special sauce, but their steaks (ribeye and tenderloin) are also perfectly aged and fresh off the butcher block. This is a small deli with seating tucked away on a neighborhood street where you're guaranteed to be greeted with a friendly smile by someone willing to answer any questions you may have. It's an older building but they're serving up bistro quality food. The menu is written on the wall to the right of the register, but they also have a printout. If you're prone to decision overwhelm and don't want to order 14 things, you can also look at the menu on their website! If I lived in walking distance, I'd come here twice a week. They also sell beer, wine, salads, sandwiches, and chicken tenders and fried fish! Can you tell I'm obsessed with this place?!

That just means the service, and atmosphere is welcoming to every one. I felt very welcomed and approached by multiple people to ensure my visit was going well. Which feels nice when you're deciding to eat local at a place that is 100% mom and pop vibe. You can choose to eat in, or take to go. I decided to order the 16oz ribeye and sit out on the patio. The patio is not accessible from the inside ordering area. So be aware of that for drink refills and such. But they manage to still bring you your food and check on you occasionally. And for a more of a self serve place, that was more than I was expecting. The steak was cooked to perfection. Not overly seasoned, and I'd say just the right amount. Veggies weren't undercooked or over cooked. I planned on not eating half and saving a little for later. Well it was too good to do that haha. All in all a good meal and can't wait to be back.
