I started working with Sound Training and Racing (STR) a little over a year ago. It all started…read morewhen I decided to attempt first triathlon (an Olympic distance race involving a 0.9mile swim, 24mile bike, and 6.2mile run, in mid August 2015). I'm a long time distance runner, but had never gotten into triathlons. In just 6 short weeks Peter and Jennifer had me trained and ready for my race where I managed to place first in my age-group and 4th out of all the women (missing 3rd place by less than 1minute!). Just a few weeks later I went on to set a new half marathon PR by over 4minutes! And one week after that I broke my previous 5k PR, from when I was 19, by almost 1minute!! Neither of those PR's had been goals, they just happened as a result of all the training I'd put in for my triathlon! Fast forward to April 2016 where I set a new marathon PR by over 11minutes, qualified for the Boston Marathon, placed 2nd out of all the women and 1st in my age-group! Again, all thanks to STR's amazing coaching. Not only did Peter and Jennifer give me personalized workouts, they often joined me for harder sessions to push me and encourage me. When it came to race day, they gave me a mile-by-mile plan of exactly what I needed to be doing; what pace to be running, where my HR should be, what I should be eating/drinking, etc... They took all the guess-work out of race day and all I had to do was follow the plan. Less than one year after that first Olympic distance race, Peter and Jennifer coached me to the finish line of my first IRONMAN (2.4mile swim, 112mile bike, 26.2mile run). They went above and beyond by actually being there at the race with me. They made a point of checking in with me in the days leading up to the event, asking how I was feeling, etc... Morning of the race they were there with me at the start line, they saw me exit the swim and head out on the bike, they were there when I came off the bike and headed into the run, and they were there cheering me on at the finish line. I cannot tell you how amazing it is having the people who have been coaching you for an event for nearly 6-months being there with you at the biggest race of your life, encouraging you and cheering you on the entire time. If you're looking to set some new PR's, take on a new distance or sport, or just work on improving overall fitness I HIGHLY recommend STR!

Thankfully, Balorico came up when I searched for lessons in the West Seattle area. Vanessa (the instructor) really put me at ease from the start (I can be shy and a little neurotic). She is incredibly good at breaking down the steps/movements in ways that are appropriate to your style of learning. She is very good at knowing when one should be challenged further and when to pull back. She pays very close attention to detail and hey, she even laughs at my lame jokes-my partner and I are full of those. How she gets thru a lesson with the two of us I will never know, but we always have a great time and somehow she managed to make us look pretty damn good. It's really cool to see how much pride she takes in what we learn. There is genuine excitement when she sees that we are putting things together. I really can't say enough. We got a lot of compliments on our dance and that was really cool, but even cooler still is the fact that I can't wait to learn more.

I bought Salsa lessons with Balorico for my wife as a birthday present. We had recently taken a…read morethree week trip to Cuba and fallen in love with Salsa music and dancing and were eager to learn how to dance Salsa ourselves. After doing some research about classes offered in the South Seattle area I landed on Balorico and booked a beginners package with Vanessa Villalobos. At first I really liked Vanessa and was optimistic about what we would learn under her guidance, but would unfortunately find her teaching style frustrating and ultimately discouraging. Vanessa uses a rapid-fire method, introducing a new dance step, running it a few times, and then quickly moving on. I have some experience with dance lessons and am used to strongly incorporating a move into our muscle memory before moving on, which was an opportunity I rarely got with Vanessa. What was increasingly aggravating were her regular proclamations that we were "getting it!" or excited announcements like, "You got it!"... as I looked around at my fellow students that seldom seemed like the case. It was my impression that the majority of my fellow students were equally lost. Overall, I felt very rushed through this course and was so unhappy with it that we didn't even bother to go to the final class. In addition to not feeling like we were being effectively taught Salsa, Vanessa was regularly promoting other classes and events as constantly up-sales. Considering my frustrations with the class this was particularly irksome. I feel the focus should have been on delivering what we had already paid for. Vanessa clearly knows how to dance Salsa and while it was fun to watch her execute moves I don't feel she was very good at passing that knowledge on to beginners. Perhaps her methods are better suited for more advanced students, but I wouldn't recommend her for those starting out.

I normally work…read moreout at Orangetheory in Portland and drop in occasionally to a few different local spinning studios for variety and cross training. Literally every reasonably located noontime Friday OTF Seattle class was full, so it occurred to me I could drop in to SoulCycle which I had been dying to try based on on what I had previously heard and read. I saw on Yelp about parking in the Whole Foods parking garage and buying something after class to get validated, so that saved me some time as I literally was coming from the road up from Portland and heading straight into class. I wasn't sure how to find my way from the garage, but a friendly woman held the elevator for me as I ran for it (I was rushing as time was cutting close). She happened to also be going to SoulCycle as well so she walked and chatted with me. The studio is gorgeous! I walked in and signed my digital paperwork at the front desk, then got my stuff situated in a locker. At first, I couldn't believe how many bikes were crammed into such a small space, but it was actually great because the volume of people in the room made the energy palpable. Victoria was a fantastic instructor and lived up to the reviews I'd read online. I loved the playlist. The fist bumps and high fives during class were fun too, as I'm used to that at OTF. I've never been to such an intense spin class, but this was totally up my alley. I came with my own spin shoes and concert/music earplugs, which I've learned to use in most of deafening workout classes. SoulCycle is SO LOUD. The bikes are a bit different than ones I've used before and there wasn't any introduction to the handlebar positions before class (unless I missed it), so that would've been useful. I was 1/3 of the way through class before I realized there was a middle handlebar (my towel was over it). The placement of the water bottle rest is low and awkward and I dropped my water bottle onto the floor the first time I attempted to put it back, so I had to unclip. It was also a little hard for me to find/reach my weights being unfamiliar with the bikes. I'm sure it's something I'd get used to with repetition, but it's possibly #shortpeopleproblems. I left class feeling like I'd given it my all and dripping in sweat. I'm still sore two days later. So great! I had planned on changing my clothes after class before going to meet up with my family, but that didn't really seem like it was going to happen with the small number of changing rooms/ bathrooms and large number of people lurking around after class. That's really my only complaint, but I had so much fun in class that I can't knock off a star for that. I left wishing I had time to take another class the next day before heading home. Seattle is known for the "Seattle Freeze" but I didn't feel any of that at Soul Cycle South Lake Union! I will definitely take another class here next time I am up in Seattle.

Just to give you a heads up, I go to the gym from the 9am-12pm time range on the weekdays so I'm not there during the peak time. Pros: 1. The childcare! They are phenomenal! I use the infant care and the 3-5 year old child care. The children are always having a great time. The teachers plan fun activities for the day, like a preschool would with crafts. If an infant is upset, they are hugging and consoling the infant. I have NEVER seen a baby crying by himself. I have never picked up my son with a dirty diaper! My shy boy LOVES coming here! My wild daughter, loves the slide area and the crafts. 2. New equipment: I love the new renovation. It's bright and airy. I can always get on a machine. Almost all machines have a TV. The only complaint is that there has been some tech trouble lately. 3. Warm Greeting from Staff: Major props to Eugene! He always smiles and remembers all of our names during check in! I always get a locker in a good area too. 4. Free Infant Swim Classes! 5. Discount on camps for kids. If you're a member, you get discounts on all camps and programs for your kids. 6. Price: For our family of 5, we pay about $110. That's 2 hours of morning care and 2 hours of afternoon care for all of our kids. If you're not going to go regularly, it's probably too expensive, but for a large family, it's a good price. Also, take advantage of the enrollment fee waiver in January, March, June, and October. If you're low income, they have discounted rates as well. 7. Free 7 Day Pass: This is not a consecutive day pass. This is any 7 days within a 3 month period. This also includes childcare!!! Also, no one pressures you to join. There are also no hidden fees. Cons: 1. Lack of parking and extremely small parking spaces. I don't even bother with the parking lot since my Acura SUV barely fits, and I can't get they baby out of the car seat with my door open. Street parking is a strict 2 hours and they often ticket you if you're longer. 2. Stretch Room: Way too small! Cycle studio people are always brushing by you on their way to class. I've asked for the small workout rooms to be open, but they keep saying no. 3. Group Class Music: I'd love some group classes that are geared towards a younger crowd with some hip music. Seriously, this would make the gym perfect! All of the instructors are really nice, but I kind of feel like I'm part of an 80's workout video. Also, some classes geared towards new moms would be fantastic! There are a lot of us there!

We had to wait a couple of hours for a tour and they kept pushing us to the side to check in people. I understand checking in members is important but it's not difficult to scan an ID or ask us to step aside for a second. We finally were able to view the gym and it's beautiful, well-maintained, and clean. There seems to be a lot of classes open and the swimming pool is great. We're still thinking about being members. As a large family, it's quite the financial commitment and the front desk is the first interaction with a place. It wasn't a great impression.
