The lady who helped us is excellent. She really knew the process and in getting license plates for…read morethe fist time in PA she made the process so much easier. I have no idea how much "extra" we spent but we didn't have to wait hours, we didn't have to battle bureaucracy, and we left with a license plate in hand. Future renewals can be done remotely but when you need to do this for the first time I strongly suggest using Edgewood Notary Tag.

Barbara made an unexpectedly complicated transfer of my car's title and registration to this state…read moreas smooth as it could be. I went to her office thinking I had all the necessary papers, and then discovered I was missing the title. While I searched for it in the glove box (spoiler: it wasn't in there), she went to my former state's DMV site and started filling out the request for a duplicate title "just in case." She printed it out for me and gave me excellent advice on what to do while I was waiting to get the duplicate titled mailed to me. Her excellent service continued when I was finally able to return with all the needed documents in hand, plus the cash payment. For all PennDOT transactions, it's cash only. She even lent me a screwdriver to put my PA plate on the car immediately. As Notary Now Plus is a one-person operation, you may need to wait. There is a small waiting area, with no TV or Muzak blaring. Soft drinks are available at a reasonable price; she also stocks envelopes of various sizes, which is a thoughtful touch and again, very reasonably priced. Barbara's very professional and also empathetic. I was actually looking forward to my second trip, to complete the transaction. Compared to other estimates I received for the service, her fee is very reasonable, and her exceptional customer service adds even more value. I can't imagine any other business outdoing Notary Now Plus for service and value.

Unfortunately, friends and family have had experiences with this business that have been…read moreoverwhelmingly negative. Most staff members are consistently unfriendly, unhelpful, and often rude. We have witnessed employees speaking negatively about customers to other customers, which is highly unprofessional and creates an uncomfortable atmosphere. To make matters worse, staff frequently provide inaccurate information and seem unwilling to assist when questions arise. The sarcastic and insensitive signage displayed in the lobby only reinforces the impression that customers are viewed as an annoyance rather than valued patrons. It is very unfortunate to see a local family owned business not value their customers and develop this reputation.

While I think PA is NUTS for privatizing government-required services like car registration,…read moretitling and emissions -- given the private sector fattens their wallets by more than doubling the actual costs (while in other states the cost is the cost -- no fat), Jack Maggs is one of the least expensive options among the ones I called. Note that most don't publicly advertise their price, which seems to be part of the big hoax -- making it a lot of work to research a more viable option. But when I'm feeling scammed like PA makes me feel as a transplant who has lived in five other states, I do my homework. Jack Maggs was a bit lower than the one that claims to price match (but was closer so -- mileage saved). They were a ten spot or so lower than AAA if you pay in cash, and significantly less than the place right near Bridgeville Licensing. At $222 for a new title, registration and plate, the amount still caught me off guard but I was more comfortable knowing they were less greedy than some of there others -- and super fast and thorough with great customer service to boot, Bottom line: Stick with the one that balances great service with a competitive price. Oh, and write your dang legislators so they take the private middle people out of government required services so you aren't gouged so deeply and in such a regressive manner. Other states charge by the value of your car... which is progressive. Get on board with what's fair! [the rant continues] Also emissions -- many states have seen the impact of these wane, and again, this cost is regressive and, when it costs twice as much here as Philly, wtf is going on. Calling around I got a range of $38 to $107 so far, and no one bats an eye -- but you should. For a "cheap" city per internet research, the costs are mighty high compared to "expensive" states like WA that even the score with salaries that are higher and state income tax that is non-existent.
