Melissa is honestly the best and I wouldn't have survived my breastfeeding journey without her. My first had a tongue/lip tie and I was having a really hard time nursing. I also had mastitis but my OB and urgent care had misdiagnosed me with the flu. I had low supply with my first and struggled through triple feeding and ultimately wasn't able to boost my supply enough and felt like I wasn't getting a personalized plan working with lactation consultants through my insurance and would always leave feeling a little confused and like I wasn't making progress due to something I wasn't doing right. I highly recommend working with Melissa! She is very responsive, knowledgable, realistic, supportive, and personable. I first reached out to Melissa for support when my pediatrician noticed my son lost weight quickly at 4 days old and he wasn't nursing well. I booked an appointment for her first availability later that week. However, after seeing my message about my son's weight loss, Melissa emailed me immediately with reassurance and advice to get me through to the appointment. This was super helpful and comforting as a first time mom. She helped me keep my supply up and provided realistic advice; she didn't pressure me to nurse exclusively or nurse every time my son needed to be fed which is extremely tiring and time consuming while also pumping. At our first appointment, we discussed my son's tongue tie which was diagnosed by his pediatrician and Melissa explained how this might affect nursing and outlined options for us. She gave advice on nursing technique and positions and developed a plan moving forward consisting of tongue exercises and a combination of nursing and pumping/bottle feeding. After this visit and after having our pediatrician release his tongue tie, my son's nursing began to improve. At our follow up appointment, we did a weighted feed and discussed any further questions and developed a plan moving forward. After these two visits, I'm feeling confident my son and I will find to a breastfeeding routine that works for both of us. I've been working with Melissa for about a year now postpartum and can truly say she is the best of the best... someone once told me that not all IBCLC's are created equal, and I have found that to be very, very true. You can tell that Melissa keeps up up-to-date with the most recent research and really knows about all facets of breastfeeding. I think this wealth of knowledge and experience is what has helped her to truly be a voice of reason for me in my breastfeeding journey when there is so much information available out there and so many people have strong opinions on one side or another (like tongue ties!). I love that she travels to my home or offers virtual visits and that she works closely with my other healthcare providers, (pediatrician, chiropractor, pediatric dentist, etc.) and I love that she is also a midwife and is able to answer my questions in that capacity as well. This is going to be the toughest review I have ever written. Why you ask? Because there are simply not enough positive words that exist to describe the experience I had with Melissa. Back in December I had my first baby, and (like many mamas) my birth and breastfeeding experience was unlike anything I could have ever prepared myself for. While I knew birthing a baby would be challenging stuff, and being flexible was important, I never once thought I would struggle with breastfeeding (naive right?). My reality threw me for a tremendous loop, and Melissa supported me (unconditionally) through some of my darkest and most challenging moments I had as a new mom. Too make a long story short, my baby lost too much of her birth weight, my milk took a while to come in, I was super engorged, and struggled with low supply. Melissa responded to every single of of my frantic messages during this time (easily hundreds of texts), and never once made me feel as though I was a burden. In fact she continuously praised me for the amazing job I was doing, and reassured me that I wasn't alone. With Melissa's support, and my own dire determination I went from producing less than an ounce of breast milk per day to 25 ounces per day over the span of three months. Melissa went above and beyond to support MY individual breastfeeding goals, while giving objective guidance, instruction and information - free of judgment. If you are struggling with breastfeeding, or simply just need some extra support in your breastfeeding journey, I can't recommend Melissa enough. She is kind, empathetic, and passionate about giving mamas the TLC needed during a VERY vulnerable time. Did I mention she comes to you?!? Sorry, not sorry, for the novel - she deserves it.
