Richard's sells various fried sundries including meat pies and egg rolls, but my favorite thing to get there is the cheeseburger poboy. This thing is so bad for you and so so good. They also offer a pizza for $10 with unlimited toppings.

It's been a while, but years ago on road trip my GF and I were on GI looking for some food. It was…read morethanksgiving night and we were camping on the beach nearby. We were perfectly willing to cook some hotdogs over the fire, or even gnaw on some nasty chicken fingers. "You don't wauhunt that," a man at the counter with a booming cajun voice advised." That chicken been dare awul dayee. If ya'll hungry, come on back here in abow thoytee minutes and my wife wil cook up sumpin good." No offense, but that's how my Ohio ears heard it. So we left, took a spin around the island and scored some drive through daiquiris. Cruising around with a quart of frozen booze, we checked out the desolate island and after about 30 minutes we cruised back to the gas station on stilts. Shonuff, the Mrs. was there and running the kitchen. Poboys were the specialty and we went native. Crawfish was not in season, but they had fresh crab, and the GF ordered shrimp. This is a local joint however, so the shrimp was in a patty form. Lots of shrimp, but it was chopped up and formed into a crispy fritter. Both were delicious. We crushed those giant poboys, enjoyed a quiet evening camping on the beach, and woke up to the sound of shrimp boats heading out bright and early. Now, A poboy is just a big sandwich on a french roll. Simplicity is the key, but what makes a great poyboy is fresh ingredients. To this day, I have not had a poyboy like Richards makes. I dare say, it's worth a drive from New Orleans just to have one. Best Thanksgiving dinner yet, and it's been over 10 years.

Just right: Crispy, thin, & tasty. Maybe a little corn meal in there? I dunno.... Side order of potato wedges were, um... "ok." Not something I'd make a special trip to go back for. Also grabbed an order of boudin balls. I'm a big fan of boudin and these were heavenly! Lightly battered with the same goop as the chicken, then fried until crispy, hot, steamy, and exploding with savory goodness. DELICIOUS! (So much so that now I'm thinking of going back for some RIGHT NOW!) Here's something that was weird: They have a few dozen different chicken menu options; dinners, platters, ala carte, etc... One menu offered "all-white" as an option. I asked the clerk if a two-piece was a wing and a breast, or what. She answered, "We only do all-white on Sundays because that's when we cook the breasts." Uh, ok... wait... what? I mentioned that the sign on the door (two signs, actually) said they are closed on Sundays. She replied that they were, in fact, open seven days a week. So I can't promise you that you can get white-meat fried chicken; I can't promise you can get it on Sunday. But I can promise you will love it because it's REALLY good!

Forget the white tablecloths; the real NOLA magic is happening right here under the neon lights. The Legend: The Fried Chicken Let's talk about that fried chicken. It's seasoned to perfection with that signature Louisiana kick--salty, spicy, and crunchier than it has any right to be. The skin stays crispy even if you're eating it out of a brown paper bag in the car, and the meat is consistently juicy. The Lowdown * The Sides: Do not sleep on the red beans and rice or the cajun fries. They are the perfect salty companions to a 2-piece or 3-piece box. * The Vibe: It's fast, it's loud, and it's authentic. The line might move quickly, but the flavor lingers. * The Price: You simply cannot find a better value for high-quality comfort food in the city. The Verdict Whether it's a late-night craving after hitting Bourbon Street or just a quick lunch on the go, Brothers is a local institution for a reason. It's consistent, it's iconic, and it hits the spot every single time. Elite Tip: Grab extra napkins. You're going to need them, and you won't care one bit.
