Old faithful. Ive…read morebeen hacking here for nearly 20 years, and the course is always consistent. Not consistently good or bad, just consistent. The course has changed somewhat over the years, originally starting its life as a converted waste tip, it is now a par 69 course, with fairly forgiving fairways. The greens have been a little slower of late, but without too much roll, making most greens a 2 putt. This is a good course if you're clubs have been in the shed and you need to dust them off. You can still be a hack and shoot a respectable score.

Faces south so think about where the sun will be before you go or go with good sunglasses. Has a large staff of teachers and is a teaching base for one of the golf associations. Has a small synthetic putting green that is super quick and a larger grass green that is very rough and slow at the moment (March 2012). The balls are yellow and a bit harder than you might like. It is useful prior to play at the nearby Sandringham or Cheltenham public courses. I like it mainly for the ability to hit off the grass.

Youngsters and age-old locals of the area are able to enjoy this vast area that contains the famous football oval, basketball courts, tennis wall and playground. Another popular element of the Peanut Farm Reserve is the "Veg Out" Community Gardens that is located just across the road at the former St Kilda Bowling Club. The gardens are primarily rented by residents of apartments in the area and offer local residents the opportunity to express themselves in a small plot of soil, which results in many colourful artistic displays. Dog friendly, the reserve is a central spot for locals to exercise, partake in sporting activities or simply bring the kids for a run around.

Ashwood Reserve, which, if you follow the path, becomes Jingella Reserve and then Holmesglen…read moreReserve, is a lovely place to go for a short walk. It's made up of a series of ovals that are used on the weekends for local soccer teams, local rugby teams and probably local footy teams, with a nice path running alongside that is popular with dogs and their walkers alike. I really like to walk it at night - there aren't many people on the path and because it's the suburbs it's beautifully peaceful. The air smells like trees and the only sounds are one's feet crunching along the gravel and the frogs (yes, the frogs) croaking in the swamp. It's pretty wonderful.

Yes, bowls. I had no idea that the under fifties played lawn bowls until I came to Melbourne and…read morewas summarily told that, contrary to what I had always thought, lawn bowls were cool, trendy and a weirdly great place to pull. And so I found myself at the Middle Park Bowling Club for a friend's birthday; two lanes sequestered just for our party and a cute little function room set aside for food, drinks and merriment. This popular bowling club also has a bar which is ridiculously cheap - I'm guessing this adds to lawn bowls' appeal - alongside not one but three bowling greens which ostensibly accommodate up to 144 people. Both competitive and casual players are welcome and there is a laid back atmosphere to the Middle Park Bowling Club which makes it a great place to while away the day with half of your focus trained on the green and the other on the bar.

You can sip back cheap beers all day long and shoot the breeze. The only problem is many clubs won't necessarily like you doing this - especially if they have beautifully manicured lawns. Well the guys at Middle Park Bowling Club are a great bunch of follks who welcome one and all. They are more than happy to let you know the rules and will chip in with a few jokes about how bad you are at the game if you wander up to the bar for a jug of beer. At $10 a day for non-members and $50 for a years casual membership, this is honestly the cheapest and best entertainment money can buy. You can also hire out a few greens and bbq's for an event such as a birthday or Christmas party. And by hire I mean you pretty just have to assume them that you'll spend a bit at the bar. They will even put on some 80's disco music on for you later on if you pay them enough.

Kingston Heath boasts one of the longest flying foxes I've seen outside of a supervised adventure camp - easily double the average length.
