As a result, the surrounding businesses cater to those visitors as well as the local residents. The Northland is a classic example. It is not fancy and might even come across as stand-offish to outsiders, but it is a decent place to have a reasonably priced drink and get some good fishing/hunting tips. I recommend you leave your "big city" expectations at the door, and go have a beer with friends and play a game of pool. Sometimes life doesn't need to be any more complicated than that.

The heater got the place toasty warm. And all that for about $50. Excellent!!! Oh, and it was here that I learned that on very cold nights condensation can form on the inside of a nearly empty gas tank. That condensation can slide down and in the morning you end up with a fuel line full of something closer to water than fuel. And then you'll have to pour in an additive and wait before you can get your car started to head to the station to buy the gas you needed to buy anyhow. One other complication that us warm weather folks never have to deal with.

Really personable bartender talked with us about the area. Loved the menu of some classics and a lamb burger! Had to get the lamb and glad I did. Delicious. Made with lamb and feta cheese it was served in a burger bun. We upgraded to the French fries, glad we did as they were hot and had a perfect crisp. Really easy parking and good, clean restrooms. About a 10 minute drive away. 2. The camping offers many options from hotel rooms in the lodge, to cabins, to RV sites, tent sites and cabin-tents. We tried the cabin-tent and LOVED it. We are use to camping in tents so a cabin-tent felt luxurious. 3. The lodge offers a huge hot tub, a swimming pool, corn hole, billiards, and an arcade...complete with several claw games which all kids love. 4. The food and drinks are really quality. We're talking gourmet food, but good selection of classics and something for everyone. They have a great selection of craft beer. 5. The white water rafting is down to a science! They offer gear for staying warm even when wet...wetsuit parts (jackets, pants, booties), and of course life jackets and helmets. You literally just have to show up. 6. The guides and staff in the lodge are very knowledgeable, very friendly, and some of them are very funny. All of them are great to talk to. We rafted the Kennebec, and we can't wait to come back and do the Dead River and the Penobscot too!
