There's no place in Dublin like the Moore Street Market. It's known throughout the country for selling traditional Irish food and also for its no-nonsense merchants. You could easily spend your day wandering from stall to stall, from top to bottom taking in the scene. Whether you're looking for flowers, fish, fruits or veg, come to the market and get a deal. But be careful of the merchants who insist on picking the fruit for you! I once came home with over 20 rotten bananas and several squashed kiwis. Even though I only paid something like 3 Euro, I was disappointed because I had to throw most of the fruit out. A friend of mine swears that the market's fishmonger is the best and told me to buy oysters from him so I guess there are good and bad stalls. Even if you don't actually need to buy anything, I suggest you saunter down this street. The funny things that I have overheard from these Dubs could fill the pages of a book. read more

A market I would never go to even though I pass it every time I am in town. For me when I go shopping for groceries and especially veggies I like to select the things that I think look good, feel good and smell good. You can not do that at this market, as you are not allowed to touch the products. What kind of market is it if you can not even select the products that you need for your use. You need to see, touch and smell when it is foods otherwise you might as well buy products with a blindfold and you could end up with a vacuum when actually you needed a green pepper. My experience with these stall keepers is not great and I do not think that it will ever be great. When I first moved here, I did no know that we could not touch and select the products that we wanted, so we got yelled at like crazy because we touched the products. The person standing at the booth took the bag out of my hands poured out the veggies that I had selected and picked the bad ones and put those in the bag instead. I apologized for selecting the veggies myself and tried to explain but instead of acknowledging my apology she just shouted out what I owed her. I gave her a look, said no thanks and walked away while she was cursing at me. I then went to the next booth a little further down the road. I politely asked if I could touch the produce and select the produce myself - well at least I thought it was polite of me to ask, now that I had gotten unsure of whether or not I could touch the produce at all stalls or if it was just by the crazy woman. I had not even touch the produce before the woman yelled at me asking me if I was crazy. I am not a big fan of the Irish temper. We did end up at a third booth buying a few produce but we never went back and this is a year ago. read more

You are not allowed to chose your own fruits and veg and every single time I got something there it was rotten to the core... but I always had a 'I'll pick them out for you, here you go lov'... Moore street is definitely a must-see when visiting Dublin. The stalls are filled with fresh produce, breads, flowers and more. The stall holders have been here forever. It's quite dirty surrounding the stalls but if that doesn't bother you too much, definitely pick up some fresh fruit! Have conversations with the stall holders, particularly the older generation, they have some fantastic stories. read more

You can get lucky here with the produce... but get distracted for 1 second and for sure you'll get a rotten apple/ banana or what ever in the bottom of your bag. So, watch the vendor and you'll be fine. read more

I came across the market as it was closing down for the day - everything was on SALE! 12 oranges for a Euro....2 gigantic bunches of grapes for 1.50 Euro...everything for just coins! The fruit I purchased was super fresh too. I do have to say the stall-owners are abrupt and impatient, but hey - cheap produce! Just get in, and get out! read more

Moore Street market, eh? If you could bottle this stuff, you could sell it tourists for an arm and a leg. If you have anyone from foreign climes visiting with you, make sure to bring them to Moore St to hear the traders shouting their shtick. They'll be able to dine out on the experience for months. It's makes you wonder: perhaps all the traders are actually resolutely middle-class and drive Saabs, and only talk with their really flat accents in order to flog plums to tourists who want to hear something a little bit native and gritty. With the history involved in this street and in any other city...this would be a national monument! it is in rack and ruin with cheap tat sold in the shops...however, i love that you can walk down this street and with all the dealers (whether you like them or not) giving you a glimpse back to what it would have been like walking down this street back in the day! I have good memories of Charlie the horse delivering the fruit and veg to the stalls and collecting the rubbish, fresher fruit & veg and the clothes/shoes in the now Ilac centre!! The dealers are still cranky and don't like you touching the fruit! The rumour is that the Malone Malone status is to be moved from Grafton Street to the end of Moore Street....! read more

Great place to nab some cheap fruit and veges, but the quality varies dramatically! Once I bought the most luscious tray of cherries for 2 euro - an absolute steal! Another time I picked up 12 fermenting pears for a euro - also a steal, but mind you they were only good for stewing! The flower stalls can be nice and the flowers look amazing, but beware the 3 for 5 euro bunches - they aren't as cool as they first appear. Much better to buy 1 really nice bunch of lilies or the like for a fiver. That's my advice, anyhoo.. read more

Moore Street market must be the most famous market in Ireland. It can be instantly recognised by the distinctive call of the traders advertising their wares in the old-fashioned way. I remember trailing my mother as we wandered by street traders who spent their days shouting at the top of their voices 'Get yer oranges, four for a pound, Oranges four for a pound'. I wondered if they all have sore throats at the end of the day? I remember specifically whenever my mum bought something, they always called her 'love'. This was all new stuff to me... It's now 'two oranges for a euro' but the vibe remains the same. A lot of the marketers are born traders and salespeople and you can see that glint in their eye as they try to hock you five batteries for a euro. There was uproar when they tried to close down this Dublin institution, the traders revolted and thankfully they lived to trade another day. Good value for fruit, flowers, fish and more but mainly it's just a really interesting shopping experience! read more

Interesting place at first. Then, it becomes very simple and smelly, especially at the fish section. This place is superior for fruits and vegetables. Get here and buy as twice cheap as in supermarkets. This is also a historical place in north side of the Dublin. Pay a visit and see for yourself! Moore Street Market is famously owned and maintained by RTÉ, the national broadcaster, because it operates as such brilliant shorthand for the perceived, yet entirely fictional, multi-cultural societal and economic climate that we live in today. This is, of course, a heap load of phooey and I don't think Moore Street really represents anything except Moore Street. That said, in and of itself Moore Street is, truth be told, colourful, fun, loud and iconic. A must for any tourists and any teenagers looking for fireworks. read more

Old-fashioned street traders peddle fish, fruit, vegetables and flowers as their families have done for decades, if not centuries. No, it's not for everyone, but it's an integral part of Dublin's culture. Recently Moore St became a focal point for immigrant communities of African and Chinese origin, but the closure of many shops to make way for a shopping centre seems to have put a halt to this fascinating combination of old and new Dublin. read more

I was in the area and wanted to buy an apple. One apple. That is all. I was in the mood for one nice apple. When I picked it out of the fruitstall myself, the woman roared abuse at me for touching the stock, snatched the (perfect) apple out of my hand and replaced it with a manky old bruised one. Love love love this place. The northside in general has a far more diverse and lively atmosphere than the more sedate southside, and Moore Street is a veritable cacophony of sound, and assails your senses in the most pleasant way possible (as long as you avoid the fish that is...not so nice!). For the cheapest fresh fruit and veg around, and a taste of the REAL Dublin, this place is top of the list. Do NOT get on the wrong side of the merchants, they can be a bit scary, but are generally just good honest Dubs, up for some banter, but only if you pay! The street is lined with the best in dodgy shops, from the clarity of phone unlocking to other establishments whose function still eludes me. This is probably my favourite street in Dublin, as the hustle and bustle and spirit isn't found anywhere else...and the prices are incredible! read more

I love this street! The first time I visited Dublin, about a year ago, the friends from Googleland who were showing me the city avoided this street, just pointed from Henry Street, said it was very typical but ugly and dirty. Now that I've been living here for almost five months I realized how wrong they were! It's got everything I need and almost all of my fresh groceries are bought here, either at the stalls or on the big middle eastern indoor market. This particular middle eastern market is great because it sells big bundles of coriander, mint, etc, always very fresh, among other fruits that you just can't find anywhere else or for which you would have to spend a lot of money at the likes of Fallon and Byrne. It's also the place to buy stuff like olive oil, spices, rice and anything you may need for an Indian/Mediterranean/Middle Eastern recipe. There are also some good butchers and other ethnic food stores, such as Polish and many Asians. One of the butchers has a small fish stall. Unlike what another poster mentioned here, I get to pick what fruits and vegetables I want to take from the street stalls and the ladies are lovely. If you arrive by the end of the afternoon you'll get awesome promotions, they try to sell as much they can by then. There's also a French Patisserie and Baker, try the croissants ;) It's also a good choice for a mid-afternoon snack. There are many electronics shops and some hairdressers, I would never buy a phone on one of these shops but they are pretty useful and inexpensive for stuff like cables, chargers and plug adapters. Keep an eye on what is slipped into your bag, it can be very handy to slip additional money to your fruit dealer so they remember you and treat you as a favorite customer. read more

Moore street market is something I love very much about Dublin. It's full of that particular brand of aul wan's that ham up their Dublin-ness for the purpose of selling flowers to foreigners. Whether the cultural identity of the sellers is actually genuine or not, it's nice to see stalls like this still alive in Dublin. read more
