THE STORE: Located on the first level of The Shops At Wailea near the northern entrance, it's a quaint space that's full of inventory. While organized, the men's shirts were hidden behind one another, so you had to put in the effort of hunting in order not to miss anything. The sale rack was adequate but none of the patterns on discount caught my eye. Instead, I ended up finding the regularly-priced shirt I passed up on at their Ala Moana Center location as my second ever purchase. SERVICE: The sole, young gal working was friendly, professional and even walked my bag around to me from behind the counter. Very classy. The only other time that happened was at Nordstrom Ala Moana. OVERALL: Advantage Maui as we have a slightly lower sales tax than Oahu.

Alexa, my fiancée, grabbed a button up shirt and was looking at it against her chest, in a mirror. The sales associate saw this and said, "Is he around to try on the shirt?" (assuming that the shirt was for a man). Alexa, my partner, said, "Oh, it's for me." The sales associate looked at her with a sort of disgust that I can only relate to if she had seen us shoot a puppy. She said, "Really? We don't have many women's clothes here. Do you golf or something?" Again, assuming that the only reason my fiancée would dare wear a button up is if she were golfing. My partner does golf, but that is not why we were shopping. She explained later that she felt the need to justify her purchase because she felt belittled in that moment. We purchased the shirt and left the store, but my partner could not shake the feeling that she was embarrassed and humiliated in public for wanting to buy a shirt that the sales associate deemed inappropriate for a woman to be wearing. She explained that in her decade of wearing "men's clothes," no one has ever treated her that poorly while shopping. It was unacceptable. This happened on 11/9 around noon in Wailea.
