For transient slips they charge $6/ft- double what we've paid at any marina up and down the Eastern seaboard. (Also twice as much as the two other nearby marinas in Brooklyn.) They informed us the bathrooms and showers are not working. Brooklyn locals warned us that ownership had changed hands a few years ago and the new owners "have no idea what they are doing." 4 years go by and nothing has changed, we had five different employees they had resigned or got fired .....The employee in the office her name is Irena, The worst. Don't know how to speak proper English, she speaks about you in her language, she disrespects the employees to the customers, she talked about everyone. She very disrespectful. has no education on how to speak to a customer.. and management and Parks Department is very aware of what's going on. If anyone is reading this and you're a new boater please do not waste your time going to Gateway Marina they're going to charge you $185 a foot. They don't care if you have a 30 amp if you have a 50 footer anything big they're charging you $1000 for electricity. Power washing is $16 a foot Plus tax lol it used to be four dollars. They're robbing everyone's money they're treating us like we are the victims. They have no experience with The Marina or boating we need to get these people out of here and get someone that knows how to run a marina. To me it feels like a Hitler camp. There is no more fun at this marina... it's all about yes ma'am yes sir. Can't even get a cuppa coffee or a good morning from the office. This Marina is terrible. The docs are not well maintained and neither are the facilities. The walkway to the docks is falling into the bay, the store is non existent, the office is non responsive, they old barge that held the club/school became an eye sore and sank. Now it sits there rotting. The place seemed to make an attempt initially but fell apart and became a bit pathetic. No services offered that are functional in reality. My dad thinks he's Jack Sparrow. In fact, he thought he was Jack Sparrow way before he knew who Jack Sparrow was. He might not look like Johnny Depp, but the character traits are there: a captain without a ship, he is in fact the worst pirate in the world. He's kept his dinky little boat at a few marinas around the city. Gateway Marina is his favorite one. It's spread over an expanse of wooden docks going out into the sound. At least half the boats docked there are sailboats, some of them quite old. There is electricity and water available at each dock; each boat gets a locker, and the place has 24-hour security. Unlike another, cheaper, marina located down the road, Gateway Marina has a lift service. They will raise your boat out of the water and put it on the mount so you can clear the hull of dirt and paint it. They also offer mount services for the winter, so the boat doesn't get damaged by ice. Other marinas offer these services as well, but Gateway Marina seems to be the cheapest out of all the full-service marinas in New York. read more

The marina is nice and the ladies who work in the office are very professional Thats where it ends...I've been in this marina for 4 years and I'm vacating it midway into the season becaue I just cant deal with the BS anymore. Their "service department" is only there to pump more money into the marina operator's, pockets. He will not allow you to bring in ay outside repair companies to work on your boat. I once asked a friend who owns a canvas shop in the area to go measure up for a new top and he told me that he couldn't and wouldn't because he would have to inflate the price to pay the exhorbitant kickbacks that they demand. Where do I begin... My first season there they lost my engine cover cushion after charging me $75 to replace the zipper on it ... 2 years later they never found it...and never attempted to replace it so i witheld $200 from a repair bill. They "remanufatured" my engine to the tune of about 9k and left my trim sender disconnected.when they re-installed it. That was 2 seasons ago and my trim sender is still not operating. That same season they swapped my windshield wiper motor charging me $180 in labor to mount it and connect 3 wires, i supplied the wiper kit ,which they wired incorrectly thereby completely draining my accessory battery... the wiper has never been repaired and no refund offered. Last season my shift cable broke. I paid for a haul so they coulld replace the cable and, after specifically reminding them about the trim sender, they never re-connected it. The control box/shifter has been falling apart ever since. This season, the day before launch i went to inspect my boat. They had charged me to paint my sterndrive (antifouling and it hadn't been done. I brought it to the "service manager's" attentioni who just shrugged his shoulders. It ws never done and I know have massive growth on my drive. I used my boat once without incident this season and then , on memorial day, I hit a log and a boat hit me. Shortly after that my engine was making noises and had limited power. I called the "service department" next morning and asked them to check it out and see if I should contact my insurance company. Weeks and weeks are gone and wasted. Last tuesday (28 days after intially contacted them) they still had no diagnosis. I wrote an email to the marina operator requesting permission to bring in a licensed and insured marine mechanic, citing the insane delay in getting any kind of service and loss of use. I did not recieve a response to my request, instead they forwarded my request the the service company owner wh assured me that he would get it together and diagnose the boat. The following day i was emailed pictures and told that my valves were damaged and I had a bent rod, mind you the boat has never overheated. The cost would be 3000 cash to rework the heads and put everything back together. I agreed and yesterday was told that the work was completed. I was told to run the boat below 3000 rpm for a break in period of 10 hours. This morning the boat starts fine and i'm running at 2500 rpms to the fuel dock. The boat strarts misfiring exactly like it did before the "repair"and stalls about 50 yard from the fuel dock. I though maybe I had some bad gas in the bottom of the tank (only about an 1/8 full at the time) so i got towed to the fuel dock and filled it with $300 worth of fresh fuel and it still woudn't start...Thank you sea tow for the quick response... I've just put them all on notice that I'm bringing in a mobile mechanic tomorrow....I'll update this review after I get his diagnosis. read more

The marina itself is nice for the location, emphasis on "for the location." But that's about where it ends. As with most marinas, you cannot bring in your own service tech, etc. What does that mean if you're considering this marina? It means when your boat has a problem, you better be prepared to bring your boat somewhere else and eat whatever the cost of doing so is. The alternative? You pay $$$$$, the boat is not fixed and you pay more $$$$$ and the boat is not fixed and you pay more $$$$. The more $$$$ is for the original problem and the new problems created by the service department. Currently, boat is misfiring/backfiring and will not rev beyond 2500 - this is the problem they supposedly fixed already. read more

I've been at Moonbeam Gateway Marina over 15 years. Huge improvement... The staff is wonderful easy to communicate with.

Always a pleasant and hassle free experience. Courteous when dealing with issues. It's huge compared to other marinas and management run a tight ship. Fees are reasonable and competitive despite rising costs of living. This is my second year, the Marina and the new management is clearly eager to change the place for the better. I have docked at this marina for many years and since we moved away several years ago we come back a few times a year as a transit. I know it has been under new management recently, but every single time I call the office there is no one there that can help or answer any questions. They always tell you to call back, cause apparently there is only one person that can answer any questions and she is never there. You always have to chase them for your transit slip #, they use to email it to you prior to arriving. Investing into reliable office help would be helpful. read more

Awful, awful, awful experience. I've been at this marina for 3 years, and couldn't be happier to get out. And very sorry I haven't done it earlier. There are so many things wrong with it I wouldn't know where to start. So I'll start with the good stuff. Marina is big. Spacious. A lot of deck space. Big boats stop here, like Banque Populaire Trimaran, biggest in the world. Occasionally you will see a Lamborghini or Bentley or two parked there. And then there is management. The owner, Ted, seems to mean well, but the issue is money, which he likes very much. But the greediest bunch are marina mechanics. STAY AWAY. STAY AWAY! STAY AWAY!!! After two seasons of them "fixing" my boat it came to the state where I'm afraid to drive it anymore. Every time it came out of a shop it had more problems than before. 15 thousand dollars of "fixing" later it is still more broken than it was when it got into their hands. It is true, even though it does sound crazy. Head mechanic Jose drives BMW and his boss Dave drives new Jaguar. But I can not drive my boat. Marina will make you believe they have no affiliation with the mechanics, but last year when I got tired of throwing money at mechanics hoping they will finally fix it, the owner Ted told me if I go to a different mechanics at a different marina he will no longer have me at the marina... Threatening to kick me out of a marina for trying to choose my own mechanic? Everyone at the marina who I spoke to warned me not to go to marina's mechanics, but unfortunately my boat was leaking so I couldn't risk going anywhere else. Now, looking back I think I should've just called the tow, taken the risk and had it towed to someplace else, that would save me three seasons worth of hustle and around 10 thousand dollars. The scheme they run is simple. Mechanics do not guarantee any work. They aren't responsible for the lift. So every time the boat has to go into/out of the water you pay marina. Then mechanics do some work on the boat, I pay marina to put it in the water, boat still leaks, has to be taken out again. Marina says it has nothing to do with mechanics, so if you need to take boat out, it's about 3-4 hundred dollars. Summer of 2009 I paid over 1.5K in lift payments. When mechanics do the price estimate, they give you a shocker price. Like say $7300. As you coming out of a shock, they will tell you "well, we can do with used parts, and it will be around $3500". So you might think you're getting a good deal. But then you look at their prices and check for prices on the internet. Prices for used parts on the internet are about 4 times less than what they will tell you. And the mechanic's boss Dave is such a sweet talker he will make you believe and agree to anything. He genuinely seems like a nice guy, but he will take as much of your money away as you can afford and even more. He seems to have influence even over marina's owner Ted, who, I think, likes him like his own son:). So if you like throwing away money and spending your seasons in hopes your boat will be fixed, you can stay here. I'm, on the other hand, happier than ever to be finally done with it. They say boat owner is happy twice, well with this marina you can easily be happy three times, second being the time you get outta there!!! read more

Like another reviewer said "STAY AWAY!" especially from the service / repair shop. The Marina and repair shop are separate entities. For service, you have to coordinate with the Marina for scheduling a temporary slip or the haul out service not to mention the liability release documentation, etc. Then you can talk to the repair shop and schedule the actual repairs (not necessarily in that order). The onus is on you, they don't care. My boat cooling system had sand or something sucked up into it causing overheating. It was a Saturday and we were about 1 or 2 miles out, coincidently, in front of the marina and called them telling them about our situation. They said sorry we are busy can't help you today. We were out on the water and in distress they didn't care. After 3 calls they told us to come in and we will work on it Tuesday. We said ok and come in and docked at the work dock, filled out the paperwork with the Marina and paid almost $400 for the week for the temp slip. We waited for the repair mechanic David (also the OWNER) to come check it out. After he looked at the boat and listened to us he said he will swap the impeller, the thermostat and flush out the system and it will probably cost us $650 to $700 if things are worse than expected it will be $1000. We also asked for full detailing service which they said they do. The agreement was $750 for a full detailing inside and out. A week later we go to pick up the boat. I take it out about a mile or 2 and I hear noises from the engine. Open the engine compartment and the belt or some pully is making loud squeaking noises. We come back and David loosens the belt. Issue solved. Tensioning the belt correctly has to happen right away and if not can cause damage. As for the detailing, it was not done right if at all. The boat looked no different except some of our helm toggle switches were damaged and melted from some kind of cleaning solvent I guess. I was amazed at how they could charge $750 for nothing but said nothing because I was concerned with the mechanical work and didn't want to get into it right then. We leave the marina again and go for a test ride and about 25 or 30 minutes later the boat starts to run hot and the alarm goes off. We shut it down and drifted for a while then started up and the temp went back to normal. While drifting we called David on his cell phone and left a message about the overheating and to call us back because we don't know what to do. He never called us back! He charged us $1040 for those repairs! After talking with a local reputable marine industry insider about our experience he told us that repair shop has hundreds of complaints against it that he personally heard of. The average person goes there and gets worked over for 3 to 4 thousand dollars. Being new to boating I'm still in shock but working on getting a reputable service person or place. read more

This is my 2nd year, the marina itself if really nice, easy in and out, office is very helpful, usually on top of things, very pleasant experience overall. But everything stops there, the service is a nightmare. All their purpose is to make you spend money, it's OK if you get good service but unfortunately that's not the case. 2 weeks after my launch after winterizing with them, still another leak, another part, another problem everyday, still not on the water. You can't have other service guys come and work on your boat, no service man in the neighborhood wants to come in there anyways. unfortunately i am going to have to tow my boat, fix it else where and come back. BUT i am not coming back next year, it's been a complete nightmare, screwed up all my season plans. STAY AWAY from this service and unfortunately because of this from the marina... read more

You know how it is , when you do not use your regular mechanic ....... "Get some lube ". I had to keep my boat in a transient slip for 2 days ... The girls from the offcie must have called me 12 x's Monday morning over a small fee i needed to pay ........ they had my credit card # I am not sure why they were calling me like rabid animals ... actually a little disturbing and unprofessional considering I had left them a voicemail message on Sunday afternoon ........ I brought a 86 force 15 hp to them they told me 200 for tune up and 50 to test run it. I pick up the engine from mechanic and he says "it runs fine". I pick it up and couple of days later take my inflatable to Floyd Benner field to launch. I get into the water and in gear my engine does not go anywhere. (failed launch) couple days later I went on iboats.com forum and read some stuff up and bought a compression tester. I checked and one cylinder had 0 compression. I paid an extra 50 to test it!! I did not go back because if I did I would break the mechanics jaw for hustling me and I gave nm a tip! Figure its not worth the jail time. STAY AWAY FROM THIS BULL SHIT MARINA. read more

My first season at Gateway Marina has ended and after years of boating at nearby Venice Marina, I must say I am glad that I made the switch. Its a very spacious facility with hundreds of slips and has a very social atmosphere. It provides great access to all NYC waterways, New Jersey's shore points and is only a 70 mile trip from quality tuna fishing. Colorful wildlife adds to the scenery as gateway doubles as a bird sanctuary The marina mechanics provided me with great service. I needed their service a few times this summer and each time they were at my boat within a day of calling them, fixed my problems right away and although maintenance was a little pricey, their service was well worth it. Head mechanic Jose is extremely knowledgeable. My only gripe and the reason for 4 stars instead of five is the absence of a fuel dock and a place to eat. read more

I have been at Gateway for about 11 years. I have a sailboat and am out on the waterwall. I love being right on the open water but there are some problems with that. First it is a long walk at least 1/2 mile but on weekends they have a dock cart to take you out and that is a positive things when you have a lot of stuff to transport. I do not use the mechanics there for engine work since they are not volvo certified and I have never had trouble bringing in my own mechanic on the few times I have needed them. The docks are fairly secure but seem to require a lot of maintance. The prices are relatively high butI am satisified. In the winter they allow me to come in much closer and supply electricity. The office staff is always accomodating but I have a feeling it is relative to how you treat them. If you are a gentleman and dont make unreasonable demands then they respond beautifully. I do leave my boat in the water year round. I have had them haul and bottom paint and that works fine. They do a pretty good job. I do almost all of the maintance and work myself so there is never an issue of service. This marina could be so much more if they were to add a clubhouse and resturant and possibly a pool. This could easily be done using barges. In fact they do have one barge there called the Polish Sailing Club. There is plenty of room to add two more barges, one with a nice resturant and one with a pool. It would be perfect then. In looking at marinas for sailboats in the neighborhood there are only 2, one in brooklyn ( a nasty close place) and in mill basin (a long way from the ocean and very close to land) Both althenatives have bugs at night. I would recommend Gateway if you are basically self sufficient and want quick access to the ocean. Once I considered moving but would not deprive my wife of the amazing view provided. read more

New management arrived 2 years ago with big promises to restore and improve a National Park area marina which had been sorely neglected for very many years. For reasons unclear to me, no restoration and certainly no significant improvement has taken place in the interim. Yes, band-aids have been applied to electrical systems and the main pier but this will not prevent a wholesale exodus if the promised wave attenuation project is not commenced before the Spring of 2020. The reason is simple: There will be very little marina left at Gateway to occupy. A cursory examination of google satellite views https://www.google.com/maps/@40.5842397,-73.9008875,152m/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en will reveal the dilapidated state of this facility as it existed earlier in the year 2019. As I type this review the dramatic destruction of dock structures and resident vessels is relentlessly ongoing after the 2nd of two moderate gales so far this autumn. The witch of November is yet to pay a visit. It is a shame and a pity that a potentially secure and beautiful anchorage such as Dead Horse Bay should reach this state of utter disrepair. To be fair to the on site marina office personnel, I will say that they are courteous while they are learning the business. The boat hauling and cradling crew are quite capable if the right individual (only one or two work here) is driving the travel lift and running the gang. As far as yard mechanical and repair services go, other reviewers have said it better than I can. Reviews can be informative but if you are coming to NYC by boat I advise you to watch the weather and pay a visit to your intended destination before embarking. read more

My boat is here.I really like this marina, it's is spacious and near to the open sea. I don't like the owner (older guy) I think he is disgusting, greedy and I just don't like the way he treats his wife in front of customers, its is disrespectful. Overall this is a good marina in NY, I just wish management took better care of the bathrooms and also cleaning the garbage that accumulates and gets stock by the docks. ( Some people there just aren't careful with beer bottles or plastic bags, but it is the marina's responsibility to taker care of this) any way they could do a better job about this. I wish the people that has boats in this marina were cleaner and care about keeping theirs docks clean, this marina would be so much pretty. There are a lots of cats also here, wild cats that live at the front of the marina and the people that has boats here feeds them ( I help feeding the kitties too). Lots of Polish and Russian boat owners here so a lot of party people around, specially weekend nights. it gets a little more louder at night but nothing bad. It's a lot of fun every time we come. We have not experience any turmoil among the people so we don't worry. It is safe. read more

Stay AWAY!!! I agree with Igor V. I have been at the marina for two years. I had their mechanics do some work on my boat also. What was supposed to be a week's worth of work at a cost of around $1800 turned out to be 2 months of work at 3 times the cost. Communications were nothing but lies every time I spoke with them and strangely enough, items were removed from the boat for some unknown reason and then misplaced and lost. I had beautiful bronze hardware for my new port windows that somehow needed to leave the boat and then couldn't be found. Stainless fittings were removed only to be found in a pile of other hardware only when I complained about it. After the work was done they no longer wanted anything to do with me or my boat. Seems although the boat was running fine before they had it and it wasn't running fine after, they argued that they had nothing to do with it and they were doing me a favor to look at it again. They overcharged me $2000 over their estimate and they were doing me a favor. Only good thing about the marina is that it has good access to the ocean and Hudson River. The rest rooms and showers haven't been updated, doors are broken and showers are usually dirty. One night my wife and five year old were in the ladies room and some guy who just happened to stray into the marina past the guard booth just walked into the ladies room and took a piss in the sink. This place is a dump. I've spoken with so many other boaters who have had similar experiences with the service there and yet the owner does nothing to correct the issue. Dave and Jose the service owner and mechanic should be removed from this place and replaced with a reliable service department. I'm leaving for the winter and am not coming back. BEWARE of this place. read more
