Montgomery Courthouse Square is a calm and easy wander on a holiday, especially with all the surrounding buildings closed and only a few tourists drifting through. The 1850 courthouse is the obvious anchor, rising up in full Green Revival style and giving the square a strong historic center. Around it, you'll find a fountain with a water display, a statue of Abraham Lincoln, and a massive Civil War era cannon labeled as a trophy of the war for the union, all of which add a little extra texture to the space even when nothing is going on.
The square itself is clean and open, with plenty of room to walk around and take in the details without feeling rushed. As a quick stop to appreciate some local history and architecture, it's a solid visit, especially when the holiday quiet gives you the whole place to yourself.
Spend a moment thinking about the plaque in front of the courthouse, "Remember the promises you made in the attic" that commemorates the Great Dayton Flood of March 25, 1913.
