As chocolate shops in Brighton go, Montezuma's is one of the best: however, it is at the low end of 'best', with places like Choccywoccydoodah and Audrey's offering much more classy items for about the some price. What Montezuma offers, uniquely, is some very out-there flavours: lots of lime and chili and that kind of thing. Not my cup of tea, but if you like your chocolate with a bit of added zing, this is the place to go. Where a lot of of chocolate shops in Brighton go for the over-the-top, chocolate heaven approach, Montezuma's looks far more professional than most of it's counterparts, with plenty of nicely wrapped packages of chocolate. It isn't actually very enticing to look at: certainly nothing on Choccywoccydoodah's incredible cake display over the road. It's all very nice, just a bit muted in comparison to some of the more out-there places around town. Still, if you like your chocolate flavoured and a bit more... Some amazing flavours you can't easily pick up anywhere else. It is slightly more affordable than chocywockydoodahhh round the corner and better chocolate than hotel chocolat next door. Very well layed out, systematic treasure trove of goodies. Lovely display of truffles that can be bought in a variety of quantities- a few weird and wonderful ones like nectarine and germanium. Fabulous selection of chocolate bars and even a few to try. The pepermint chocolate was sweet and not at all chemically. Great service topped off the visit. read more

A very cool "local" chocolatier that shouldn't be missed if you are in Brighton. They have a wide selection of bars, truffles, candy and gift boxes and the prices are quite fair considering the quality. Be sure to try the truffle that has the tequila and hot pepper in it!! YUM! read more

There's a reason why Montezuma's has won awards and acclaim for its confectionary products! They're super tasty! Since the year 2000, when the husband and wife team Simon and Helon Pattinson founded their first flagship store here in sunny Brighton, they've been delighting locals and tourists alike with their wonderful array of delicious chocolates. Over the years the range of sweets available here has changed and evolved, but one thing has always stayed the same: they still taste amazing! The service is always fantastic, with the staff always ready to offer you free samples, help you out with any questions, and satisfy any particular dietary requirements - whether you're vegan or vegetarian, Montezuma's will have chocolate for you!-. The store itself is also very nicely designed and well laid out, without being too ornate. The chocolate similarly doesn't suffer from over elaboration, with the owners here focusing on taste rather than aesthetics. The prices are reasonable too, with a 120 gram bag retailing for £4.50 and a 100 gram bar £2.29. Whilst everything sold here is certainly worth purchasing, a word of warning, once you start trying the chocolate at Montezuma's, you may never want to stop! read more

Two former lawyers went for a trip to South America and were inspired by the powers of the cocoa bean. And so begins the story of Montezuma, a chocolate company founded in 2000. Once you enter the tiny store on Duke Street, you can see that there is a lot of passion behind the making of chocolate. They have inventive flavours here: Ginger, chilli and ginger, orange nibs, nuts, more fruit etc. Personally, however, I want to love the quality of the chocolate, I really do. Fantastic place. The chocolate here is purely delicious. There is so much choice and everything looks and smells great. The staff are friendly and helpful and they have a great online service too - quick and reliable. It also has I think the nicest chocolates for vegan or dairy-free eaters. A box of 9 organic, dairy-free and vegan chocolates taste delicious and come in three fantastic flavours. A great gift for those who can't eat dairy or are vegan. read more

I would guess that this shop is overshadowed by the better known 'chockywockydodah' opposite - but this is the far superior of the two shops in terms of quality of chocolate (which really is at the top of the spectrum). Really good range of unusual chocolates at a much more reasonable price. I think I remember reading once that the owners were solicitors who gave up the law to begin a chocolate shop ! It might not have the big impressive cakes in the window but it certainly worth having a look inside ! read more

Absolutely the best tasting chocolate on the planet! Located in Brightons 'chocolate street' i believe Monte's was the first chocolate shop there and it's still the best. The range of products is a little limited but as others say their strength is about the pure chocolate joy and not the presentation. I've tasted Choccywokky's stuff and it's terrible and Hotel Chocolat is fine for buying gifts and for something a little different but Monte's is absolutely the best. My favourite is Orange and Geranium - heaven! cloesly followed by milk choc buttons. I'm not so keen on the touristy chilli chocolate. You can also get the basic bars in Waitrose and Taj. read more

Montezuma's is my favourite chocolate shop, before going in there I was a huge fan of Hotel Chocolat which I still like, but the more interesting choices available at Montezuma's make them better. The staff are all brilliant in there, every time I've gone in they've only tried to get my attention if it looked like I needed it (as opposed to other stores who seem to pounce the second you walk in), offered to get tasters from out back for me and are very informative about their products which was handy when buying for vegan friends! read more

My take on Montezuma's is a little different from the other reviews. I have bought their small bars of chocolate before- they have a great series of unusual flavoured chocolate bars for about £2- they're called 'little bars' on their website and all have quirky names. My favorite of the little bars is the 'spice it up' -dark chocolate with ginger; and the 'hula hula'-milk chocolate with coconut. I have also had one of their 100g bars- I like trying new and unexpected flavours- the geranium flavoured dark chocolate is excellent, it sounds too strange but tastes like fragrant Turkish delight. I have enjoyed some of Montezuma's products and they undeniably fairly priced for ethical chocolate with some innovative ideas. Where I deviate from the other reviews though is in my enthusiasm for the quality of the chocolate- when compared to the nearby Hotel du Chocolat (admittedly more expensive) , the chocolate here is noticeably less rich, less tasty- it tastes more waxy and sugary. You can do a taste test just by taking a sample from both shops and eating them one after the other- you'll be surprised at how different they taste. So I would say that Montezuma's is good for flavoured chocolate but that for the plainer chocolate hit I would head to their rival. Sorry! read more

This place sells some of the tastiest chocolate on earth. Everything I've ever eaten from here has been heavenly. The variety is great and there's always something a bit different. I recommend on of the exotic chocolate bars. Try the dark chocolate infused with chilli - fantastic. read more

This is the best chocolate I have ever tasted! It has everything a chocolate lover could ever want. They do fantastic versions of dark, milk and white chocolate. It's all organic and the emphasis is on the amazing taste. They experiment with lots of different flavours that are all worth a try! However my favourite is the range from around the world, it's a real lesson in chocolate. Don't forget to ask for it to be gift-wrapped. I love the giant chocolate buttons. Their sold in large jars that make you feel like the luckiest kid in the sweet shop. Unfortunately they don't last very long in my house. read more

i love chocolate, verging on chocaholic, and this is by far, the best chocolate i have ever tasted. particularly advisable to the chocolate lover, are the thick, hunky slabs of chocolate, which appear to have been broken up in to pieces with a sledge hammer -they're that thick and chunky. you can point to any chunk fitting your size preference and seriously sink your teeth in with raw unadulterated jaw-opening bites. the slabs come in 8 different varieties including seriosuly dark infused with organic cocoa nibbs making for a wondeful texture, white chocolate with cranberry and almond, or my favourite, milk with pecan and banana chip (melt-in-the-mouth smooth milk chocolate almost defining its own unique genre). definitely worth a look in are their hand-crafted truffles, the many exotic flavoured bars (milk chocolate, peppermint and vanilla is superp and dark chocolate and chilli is strangley pleasure inducing- the original aphordisiac) and deliciously warming hot chocolate which comes in various flavours, for examply milk chocolate and nutmeg, to drink there (comes with an individual chocolate of your choice) or to make at home. Cadbury's will never be the same again. read more
