As chocolate shops in Brighton go, Montezuma's is one of the best: however, it is at the low end of…read more'best', with places like Choccywoccydoodah and Audrey's offering much more classy items for about the some price. What Montezuma offers, uniquely, is some very out-there flavours: lots of lime and chili and that kind of thing. Not my cup of tea, but if you like your chocolate with a bit of added zing, this is the place to go. Where a lot of of chocolate shops in Brighton go for the over-the-top, chocolate heaven approach, Montezuma's looks far more professional than most of it's counterparts, with plenty of nicely wrapped packages of chocolate. It isn't actually very enticing to look at: certainly nothing on Choccywoccydoodah's incredible cake display over the road. It's all very nice, just a bit muted in comparison to some of the more out-there places around town. Still, if you like your chocolate flavoured and a bit more... South American, Montezuma's may be for you!

Brighton was buzzing and hot - a great city to spend a few days around. All those serving us were simply delightful and courteous. We bought our usual booze and nut based (macadamia and cashew) choccy and on this occasion we also tried a box of marzipan chocolates that were divine. We had the best ice cream sundaes, mine was passion fruit based and my wife went for the caramel based one. Both were delicious. The only down side was no customer toilet. As I see it when you serve drinks you provide rest rooms. These are premier league chocolates, hot drinks, alcohols like gin and cream based drinks, fab ice creams and they have branched into body lotions and cosmetics. Hotel C makes me think how shameful it is that Britain once had great chocolate makers and has lost them all to conglomerate greed. I'm conscious I no longer know enough about Thornton's as they have disappeared from view. I still remember one British chocolate maker that had as common in a chocolate box, green chartreuse filled chocolates and chunky stem ginger chocolates when today they sell stuff that they label chocolate when it barely is (a bit like cheap sausage makers saying their nasty products contain 'meat') instead they make stuff full of cheap sugar, cheap vegetable oil (they sell off cocoa butter to the cosmetics industry for more money and find cheaper muck to add to their manufacturing processes). In fact I watched a documentary on one of the big mega conglomerates about making chocolate bars and one of the staff actually discussed their efforts to make their products as cheaply as they could and how they worked hard at finding ways to make bars with as much of 'other' ingredients to cut back on chocolate. They sure a fooling a lot of people a lot of the time. For me it's Hotel Chocolat all the way.

I'm sure that place exists somewhere but alas, its not here! Hotel Chocolat is actually a chocolate company aimed at the luxury market. Their packaging is slick and simple and their shops are packed with gift boxes, hampers and slabs of chocolate aimed at obvious markets like For Him, For Her, For Them. I'm not a fan of their milk or white chocolate - I much prefer Monteuzumas and Valhorona - but I do like their dark chocolate and particularly, their Single Estate bars from Venezuela, St. Lucia, Madagascar and Sao Tome.

Yet every weekend, Rolys has hordes of people queing up to go inside, savour a free sample and buy half a pound. Its amazing. Maybe it's the fact, it's a West Country company and people associate the West Country with fudge? Maybe their fudge is crumblier and creamier than rival fudge companies? Who knows. I don't particularly like fudge but now I'm thinking about it, I could probably manage a mouthful or two of maple syrup and walnut.

It was delicious and that sugary rush just made time going into freefall - it was divine. Thornton's offers the next best thing. I have tasted a lot of fudge in my time, but never have I kept coming back for more like I do for Thornton's good stuff. The store is nice enough, the staff are fine - this is your typical shopping mall staple. But that fudge! Mon dieu!! Fudge, fudge, fudge!! Yum, yum, yum!

Alongside dozens of food stalls selling chocolate related products, there was chocolate demonstrations and masterclasses. My favourite bit however, had to be eating all the free samples and discovering wonderful new chocolatiers like William Curley and Damien Allsop. Some of the fudge looked fresher than the rest - they didn't seem very busy, and I guess they only are during tourist season/Saturdays, so maybe it dries out a bit. The other weird thing was the totally out of place shopkeeper - okay perhaps physically (if we're being very judgemental and generalising here) he resembled a jolly cornish fudge seller, but his utter lack of banter and mildly disdainful expression made the whole experience a bit hysterical!

Behind the counter, there were minty, fruity and nutty concoctions of fudge, although the shopkeeper said his best seller is the toffee crumble. Done and done. Sweet Williams also has pick and mix sweets at 90p per 100grams, and some pre-packaged candies and fudges. A small freezer keeps a few selections of ice creams and frozen snacks as well, although buying anything other than the source of the delicious smell would just be silliness. Service is very friendly, and if you're having trouble deciding, the shopkeeper can put together a small sample of your top picks for you. I definitely recommend checking it out if you haven't indulged enough over the holidays.
