I stumbled upon Fresh Options and decided to hold my breath so I could take pictures inside. Low and behold, this branch didn't have the stench of its sister stores. I stayed away from the fresh meat section, because they haven't earned my trust just yet. Glancing at their frozen section, they had many packaged meats that were prepared and ready to fry up or pop into the micro. I decided to take home their tapa, sisig and longganisa. The packages were perfect portions for hubby and me, and at reasonable prices at that! Not the healthiest option since the prepackaged meats have higher salt and fat content than preparing meals from scratch; but it makes for a great alternative in emergencies when you're short on time. You first boil, dry then deep fry the leg of a pig. Of course the quality of the cut is important. For Gordo's to succeed, the owner must make sure to have a steady supply of the raw material. The taste should never differ from order to order, as failure to control the quality is a sure kiss of death. When I was still living in Quezon City a few years back, someone put up a business similar to this. Wanting to be a good neighbor, I decided to give the crispy pata kiosk a try, and I was happy with the result. Sad to say, that business closed after a few months. Their next door stall said that there was no constant supply such that there would be days when they ran out. Also, that ill-fated store looked pretty ordinary. At least Gordo's can be seen from a mile away. And for starters, they also deliver. The next time I have friends over for drinks, I'm going to give this newcomer a try. However, if you can look way past the appearance of this public market, you'll find that it's actually a good place to buy not only wet items, but dry goods as well. Guadalupe Public Market also has stores selling traditional baskets, plastic items, affordable apparel, household cleaning materials, and even cheap diapers. Another advantage of patronizing this public market is that you can develop loyalty with your favorite sellers and they would be more than willing to give you the choicest cuts and huge discounts on your purchases. The Guadalupe Public Market is very accessible because it's near jeepney terminals and bus stops along EDSA. Plus, it has access to the Guadalupe MRT station.

What makes this Monterey Meatshop different from the one I always go to, is that this one has more vegetables for sale. And the shelves are full of vegetables in the morning. It's always fresh and at reasonable prices too. There are fewer staff here so it gets pretty slow when there are lots of people. You do have to remind them about your order and how you'd like them to cut it. But overall, their service is still good.

We shop separately for everyday groceries, for clothes and yes, even for meat. This is a place where a lot caterers and restaurants get meat and fish in bulk. I love how everything is so organized. There are sections specifically for seafood, chicken, for imported steaks and for every kind of cut imaginable. The meats are packed so neatly, too! They vacuum-sealed in square bags so stacking them in the fridge is super easy. I love how fresh everything tastes when they're cooked and how lean the pre-packed meats are (even the pork). I love the selection of fish they have -- from Black Bass to Norwegian Salmon and in different cuts, too! Plus, if you're a frequent buyer, they keep records of you. Just tell them your name and they can show you records of what you've bought in the past. Great for keeping track of your budget...I don't know if they do this for everyone though, maybe just those weird moms who buy a week's worth of groceries as much as caterers do for a big event.

Here you'll find imported steak cuts, frozen imported seafood like mussels, cod, salmon and other fish I've never even heard of, and I learned of this place by asking a caterer where they get their salmon supplies from. It is quite cheap, the salmon and the cod in particular, and they have it in different sorts of cuts and fillets. Do call in ahead to check on stocks though, as they are quite popular with bulk buyers and stocks may sometimes be limited. As for how I prepare my fish, let's just say that it isn't something that you can stomach on a daily basis, so let's leave that for another post somewhere else. "My meatshop? MyOwn Meatshop!" I just made that up. Thought you needed some cheese with your salmon. No? Ok sorry.

There's a deli and a grocery section with exotic spice packets and lots of imported goods from the US and Europe. Make sure you're wearing a mask before you enter. At the door the guard will check your temp and spritz your hands with alcohol. Currently there's no limit to the number of customers that can enter at one time; you will definitely need to remind the other shoppers to keep their distance. What irritates me about this place is that many items are missing price tags. I come here mainly for their baked goods and specialty items. I'm looking forward to trying out food from their cafe.

It's of my my favorite Filipino delicacies. Thank goodness for Bibingkinitan, I can enjoy my hot bibingka all year round. Of course, it seems too indulgent to finish one plate of bibingka all by myself. But Bibingkinitan serve freshly baked mini bibingkas, just the right size for one person, though I can finish a whole box (6 mini bibingkas inside) in one sitting if I don't control myself. I recently learned that they also have ube, pastillas, macapuno and even peanut butter bibingkas, but those are just seasonal. It's okay, I'm more than happy with my original bibingka, more butter and no sugar, please. I like bringing home a box of Bibingkinitan for an afternoon snack, but I also like eating it at their stall, with their special calamansi juice.
