South Ranchito Dual Language Academy

South Ranchito Dual Language Academy

(8 reviews)

This is my son's first year at South Ranchito. He started 1st grade here after coming from the…read moreIrvine School District, where he previously had a positive academic experience. I chose this school in part because I attended South Ranchito myself as a child and had a good experience, so I never imagined we would be dealing with this now. That said, it is important to note that the school was very different back then and structured differently than it is today. Before enrolling my son, I was repeatedly reassured that he would receive support learning Spanish and that the language barrier would not be an issue. We are now six months into the school year, and that reassurance has proven to be inaccurate. My son is struggling significantly due to the language barrier, and it has affected his confidence, attitude, and academic performance both in Spanish and English. Homework has become a daily struggle because he dislikes the school and feels overwhelmed. These issues never existed before. He is now falling behind academically, and I am genuinely concerned that he may not pass the year. I recently received notice that he must stay after school for additional ELA testing, which unfortunately confirmed that he is being pushed back academically rather than supported. Communication has been another major concern. I am contacted when my son is involved in an incident, yet there is little to no communication when something happens to him. Minor issues are treated as major problems, and I receive repeated calls stating that he "doesn't listen" or "has difficulty following directions," despite my explaining multiple times that the language barrier plays a significant role. Instead of offering understanding or solutions, responses have felt dismissive and authoritative rather than supportive. I also attempted to contact the principal regarding my son's academic struggles and transition. I left a message and never received a call back. For a parent raising serious concerns about their child falling behind academically, this lack of response is unacceptable. As a single working mother, I am unfortunately forced to keep my son enrolled until the end of the school year due to after-school care availability. However, he will not be returning next year. I strongly discourage enrolling your child here if Spanish is not their first language unless you thoroughly research the specific classroom and support system they will be assigned. While this may be a classroom-specific issue, based on our experience, this school has failed to support my child academically and emotionally. Avoid if possible.

We've only been at the school for a little while but we are extremely impressed…read more We are specifically impressed with Dr. Frank Montejano and the warm community he is fostering. Our little one started a few weeks after the beginning of school so had adjustment issues the first couple days but since then has been thriving and is excited about going to school every single morning which is an absolute joy.

I had so much hopes for this school since it was recommended by a close friend…read more My son started in the JK class during the middle of the school year, within three days he was enrolled in the school the teacher set up a meeting to let us know about our sons delays. Everything was advised before enrolling him into the school. So that there wouldn't be any surprises. When we showed up she literally told us to go to our school district and seek help there and didn't give us any alternatives or any plans from her part to help him. We felt neglected from her part, she signed up to be a school educator and didn't go along with that purpose to TEACH. After having a second meeting we ended up giving it another try, things just weren't going good at all. I will message her to let her know when we were running late we decided to make the commitment even though we didn't live 5/10 minutes away we lived almost 30 minutes away and due to traffic we will ge there late and we take full responsibility for it. I will do my part and message the teacher to advise we were arriving late, always ignore them. I will message her when my son will miss school always ignore them. Everything from her part was ignored I am very upset because everybody else was great with us and made us feel welcomed since we were the new family. I will say this if teachers want to pick and choose who they want in their class they should do some type of assessments to see if they are up to level. Since it looks like she wanted them all to be in the same level/ structure even though he started in the middle of the year. Some kids just need a little more time and she didn't give my son that opportunity. Kudos to principal Dr.Frank and after school teacher Mrs. Garcia they were great.
