Getting to the hotel: You need to ride the Gornergrat to the hotel. This is not free and will add an extra $40ish CHF each way for everyone. When arriving during the winter time you will probably be on a train filled with a ton of skiers. Get comfortable for the 40 minute train ride and enjoy the views. They are incredible! Sit on the right side for the best views of the matterhorn when ascending the mountain. Once the train reaches the final station you will need to disembark and head to the hotel. I recommend wait a moment to let all the skiers off since you will probably have a few suitcases. Once you are off find the first set of elevators to take you to the hotels ground floor. Then enter the building to find the second set to get to the lobby. Things to do at the Hotel: Now this is the best part about this hotel. This hotel you want to book as an escape. There is not much up there and it is wonderful. They have Zooom which is a virtual reality experience. There is also a small chapel and a few gift shops. If you come in the winter you can ski right from the hotel down or in the summer you can go hiking. However even if you do not do any of those, my favorite area is above the hotel where you can see everything. They have a small lookout point that allows you to see all 29 peaks that surround you. Honestly an incredible place to see the stars. It is so quiet and such a great escape. Food: Now for food you have only 2 options. For lunch there is a cafe style food. However for dinner and breakfast they open their restaurant up for a great meal. Now included in the hotel rate is a 4 course dinner and a hot breakfast buffet. Honestly it was delicious and incredible! Rooms: Each of the rooms are named after one of the peaks that surround it. They will tell you the history of that peak and your room will include a rock from the peak. No matter where your room is, you will have a phenomenal view. Overall this hotel will always be one of the most unique hotels I have ever stayed at. 100% would stay here again.

Situated at the foot of the majestic Matterhorn, Hotel Schwarzee offers the ability to set off at sunrise and be the first skier on the slopes in the morning. The views are astounding, and the meals absolutely delicious. And- incredibly affordable when staying in the dorm. We stayed in mid-August and had a room with a balcony facing the main drag. This means a Matterhorn view when weather permits. We were fortunate to have good weather. Since there's no air conditioning at the hotel, having a window open is necessary on hot summer evenings. Unfortunately, there's always lots of activity on the main street so the noise level may bother some people if a window and/or balcony door are left open for ventilation. The hotel is luxurious but some areas have eclectic decor. We enjoyed the comfortable king bed, the ice cold tap water, and the quick hot water. The bathroom had niceties like a heated floor and heated towel rack, but the toiletries were inferior. We missed having an in-room safe. Our room and en suite bathroom were spacious by most European standards. Hanging and drawer space were adequate, and there were USB ports for charging electronics. Breakfast was included with our accommodations and was a buffet (actually 2 buffet set-ups, with one having gluten free selections) plus a choice of individually prepared eggs. While the selection of hot and cold foods was good, the food in the buffet chafing dishes was far from hot during our visit. There are 2 elevators serving the 4 guest floors in the hotel, so there can be backups during group check-ins and checkouts. This happened for our group and for at least one other we saw. The stairs are adjacent to the elevator, but the poor lighting in the stairwell made for an uncomfortable experience. We didn't use any of the spa facilities. While we enjoyed our stay, I might consider a different hotel if I return to Zermatt.

Tucked away in an alley from the main road full of pedestrians/tourists, silent electric taxis and bikes, Hotel Alpina is somewhat difficult to find due to our confused GPS system. Since you have to check in at the Tannenhof Hotel, perhaps it would have been better to set your GPS for this hotel. By American standards, this budget hotel costs more than you would find in the U.S., but everything in Switzerland costs more than the U.S. Regardless, Hotel Alpina provided a clean and comfortable room with few amenities, but great customer service during their business hours. Once you've arrived, check-in is easy and then up to the third floor I climbed. For those who need it, there is a small elevator, but you still have to manage a few steps to your room. Room 18 had an updated bathroom with hand soap, bath gel, towels, and window. With the bedroom having a small table and 2 chairs, the balcony had 2 chairs which we didn't use due to the rainy weather. While there are no cooking facilities nor refrigerator, Tannenhof Hotel gladly stored my food in their refrigerator and provided hot water upon request. Additionally, there is a restaurant inside Tannenhof Hotel, numerous eateries on the main road, and a nearby Migros and Coop for fruit, prepared foods, groceries and CHOCOLATE. Inside Hotel Alpina, there was a dining area for guests. To our great surprise, when we had returned from our hike the following day, we found our room serviced by the cleaning staff with all new towels and our beds made. For more security, there was a safe that I could have stored my valuables, but I didn't use it. When it was time to check-out at 11am the next day, we were able to store our luggage at Tannenhof and sit in the downstairs area until it was time to leave by train. For our two night stay, I would have said I had a positive experience had it not been for the stolen cash. Beware.

There was so much to do, I could've stayed all day. We started in the quiet room yurts and had some tea and a bit of trail mix. Then, headed to the outdoor onsen that overlooks the Matterhorn before heading to our massages. Mike was awesome and is a trained osteopath. He helped to work out all the kinks from a week of skiing. 10/10 recommend!

They smoke freely here which is a no for me. Dinner notes below. Service is unfortunately slow. They seem to be understaffed. It took several requests to get water and pita refills. Setting is dark and eclectic. Wine selection is solid. Mezze to start, with pita chips, hummus and eggplant as standouts. Kofte was interesting but the tabbouleh had a disconcerting consistency. The Korean fried chicken was too salty and sweet. The eggplant curry was a hit and happened to be a massive portion. Fries were pedestrian.
