Monte De Rey use to be "popping" anytime you came through the door. Went in on a week night and shocked by the lack of customers. None of the regular waiters and waitresses who have been there for years are no longer working. We were attended to quickly and the waitress did a good job. The food was good but not outstanding or as good as it had been in the past. Apparently there is new management and due to the influx in new mexican restaurants in the area the customer base has went way down. In my opinion, still the best Mexican in Wilkesboro but not the standard it use to be. read more

This place I'm rating high for the service. I came here with my kid for an after field trip lunch - after another place who confirmed the date, was actually closed that day. So one of the teachers called this place last minute. We get there (2 classes of pre-K kids, plus teachers and parents) and they had the kids orders all ready. They were smart enough to know to feed the kids first. My son had his food and I was still looking at the menu. Then this one guy asked me if I was ready, and I told him my order. He didn't write it down or anything, and mind you he's walking back and forth around us, and there's other parents and teachers ordering too. In ten minutes and I don't know if that's accurate, but I know I wasn't sitting there going, "where's my food!?!". He was really quick. He came and placed all the food I ordered in front of me. He didn't have to even ask, "Who ordered the so so?" He remembered me and my order. I think that's just awesome - again, especially being surrounded by a bunch of 4 and 5 year olds and teachers and parents during the LUNCH hour. Paying took a while. There was a long line, but again, there was us, and all the other people who ate their that day wanting to pay. But when I did make it to the cash register, the guy was fast. Oh the food, you ask? Ok, well my kid ate the cheese quesadilla. That's saying something because he is a picky eater. If you follow me, you know we always order him chicken nuggets wherever we go, so I was scared when we came here that he'd starve because this was a mexican place and I know they don't have nuggets. Anyway - he ate it. And they even brought us this fried strawberry dessert, and my kid loves sugar - duh! So he ate that too. He even asked if I could bring him back there when it wasn't a field trip. I ordered some spinach thing, but because it's been so long since we were there and me writing this review, I can't tell you what it's called - sorry! But it wasn't something too memorable but I think that's only because for me, good mexican food is one that is home cooked and when I was in college, my roomate was mexican, so I went to her house on the weekends often and I think their cooking ruined all mexican for me - especially fast food restaurant mexican food. We went on Cinco de Mayo and ordered half a pitcher of margaritas. Without question the worst margarita I have ever had. Very little taste and very little alcohol. For dinner I had a beef taco and a beef enchilada along with rice and beans. The rice and beans were OK neither the taco or the enchilada were worth eating. The ground beef do not appear to have been seasoned at all. Given the day we were there the place was crowded so I will not comment on the service except to say it was unremarkable. We would have been much better off to have bought a bottle and tequila and have gone through the drive thru at Taco Bell. read more

Wilkesboro has almost nothing going on in the evening. This place came to my rescue and is open relatively late and they had pitchers of Dos Equis for $7! The carni asada dish I had with wraps, rice, beans, and other items was awesome! You can ask for spicy sauces and they'll bring out a new plate and 2 types of sauce for you to use. The chips they give you for free were plentiful and the sauce was spicy, the way I like it. They even gave a free little dessert, a chip with strawberry and whipped cream at the end. Great lunch! Started with the guacamole dip. I wish it would have been more avocado than sour cream, however it was still good. Had the #8 combo plate, the tamale and enchilada were delicious. Super service! Amazing choices and the shrimp fajita quesadilla was superb! Drink choices are fairly decent but this is not a place for wine. Multi order check out on one ticket which is super for groups paying separately. We arrived at 6 and no wait, but by 7:00 it was a 1/2 hour wait. Ate here tonight. Waitress was friendly ..i ordered the beef burrito and enchilada. Wasnt good. Bland, no taste hardly. Also ordered the white cheese with our chips. Wasnt even thick. Monte Del Rey! The Crem dela Crem for Mexican food in Wilkes County at least. Well they are down at the moment in business but I'll be straight up. Those other places do not deserve the business they are getting except for La Fourtana. Monte Del Rey by far has the best food and the service albeit a new staff largely non native speaking immigrants which actually grinds my gears a little to be honest give great service. But guys you've got to hire people that can communicate well. If your gonna do business in America Assimilate. That's not too much to ask. I'm gonna dock a star for poor communication skills. I give this place zero star! Absolutely the worst service I have ever had!! The waiter was not only rude but didn't show up to take drink orders until 10 minutes after setting down. I found a long black hair in their salsa! Although, I have short blonde hair, he said it was mine! I will never eat here again! This place was great! The were super packed so we took seats at the bar. There was some slight confusion and wait to get our designated waiter but once he got to us everything was really great. The food order came out quick, was very warm in temperature, and very tasty. 3 out of the 4 in our party had the margarita. It was pretty good...they appeared to have their own margarita mix which they first poured then added the tequila. All in all, a really nice experience! Recommend to anyone passing through Wilkesboro or staying in the area...just make sure you get their kinda early if it is Friday or Saturday for dinner! read more

I always make sure to get the chilaquiles mexicanos made with chicken they are awesome. if you are interested in trying something that you have never tried before and are afraid that you will get something that you don't like let me assure you that the chilaquiles Mexicanos are quite tasty I don't usually eat the nachos that have been soaked in red sauce but the chicken that has a very good white cheese poured over it and the shredded lettuce with guacamole and tomatoes is awesome as well as the rice and even when I was almost 400 pounds I could never finish the entire plate. This place really does have more to offer than the foods that we are all familiar with like fajitas tacos burritos and rice with chicken give some of these other foods a try. I used to LOVE Monte's. We would go at least once a week but most of the time more than that. Anymore, this place is just extremely sad. The past few times I've went, I've left without tipping and that's a big deal because I am generally a BIG tipper. The guys who used to work here would keep this place hopping but good luck getting the current servers to even bring you a drink refill, much less get your order correct. We've only been getting waitstaff that you see once to order food and drinks and never again the rest of the meal. We waited for our check, a refill and SopaiPillas for a solid 30 minutes before getting up and just telling Arturo what we ordered. Arturo is one of the only reasons I'd ever consider going back and is the best but unfortunately he doesn't wait tables. The last time I dined here, the manager snapped / fussed at me when I wanted to return my order because apparently I had ordered the dish 'wrong' ‍‍. I've spent a lot of money here but no more because it's become so horrendous. It will be a loooong time before I return... if I ever do. read more

This was by far the worst Mexican food I've ever had. The cheese tasted like American. Two of 3 of our orders were mixed up. I've never left so much food without taking it boxed up to go. Wish I didn't have to give any stars, it was awful. Bad service (waitress was extremely rude), did not get what we ordered, food tasted rotten. I wanted a strawberry margarita, after about 5 minutes she came back with the other persons mango margarita and slammed it on the table (it sloshed all over and the glass was coated with it) and informed me they didn't have strawberry so I asked for peach and a few minutes later she came back and said they didn't have peach so I ordered a small mango. We were ordering and my special needs teen son (who speaks a bit low) was telling her what he wanted and she was rolling her eyes, obviously impatient, sighing and just plain rude. He asked for chicken tacos and was given beef that just looked bad but he ate it as did we with ours. I ate less than half, I didn't want to chance being sent a plate with spit (or worse) if we sent our food back. With the attitude of the waitress I did not trust this place. The rice tasted like old mildew smells. We adults ordered the same thing and were given 2 different orders. We would never return here. read more

Every time I go to Monte the food is always good but the last time I went the server seemed like she didnt care and I saw her sitting on her phone and when the chicken nachos came out you could tell they had been sitting because the chips were soggy. But they have always been good to us so I didnt say anything and I left the server a eight dollar tip because I dont believe in not tipping and hope she was just having a off day. read more
