El Raval

With glowing reviews on The Fork and TripAdvisor, we made last minute reservations and thought we'd…read moretry it out. Excellent service, creative and flavorful food, a true experience. Tip: beware if you have food allergies or sensitivities due to limited menu (gluten, dairy, and seafood are plentiful and hard to replace in dishes). Food/drinks: You have 2 options: a tasting menu, and a really long tasting menu. We went with the really long one that had 4 apps, 3 mains, and 2 desserts. Sadly a bad lunch meant I had to watch my partner enjoy, instead of fully partaking myself, but techniques were innovative and flavors I did taste (esp of seafood and mushroom) were strong!! Accompanied by a dry fine bubble bottle of local cava recommended. Tip: make sure you have more than 2 hours (we didn't, due to curfew) or it will feel rushed! Service: Excellent. Eduardo was attentive, helpful, explained dishes, fretted over my non-eating, and nudged my partner (politely) to eat faster due to the many many courses. Ambiance: So the main restaurant is a beautiful, eclectically decorated room...which is not where we were seated. We were in the bar area of the room on the other side, which was stately, muted, and felt decadent. Intimate (ie, alone) but great for watching the chefs prepare desserts! Overall, a unique, romantic multi course meal that's great for having lots of time and a very open (seafood-friendly) pallet.

I can't believe this restaurant hasn't earned at least one Michelin star! If I were to guess why it…read morewould be the service. It was excellent and attentive and our waiter could speak English well. However, there were a few minor missteps that kept the service from being at the superb level necessary for Michelin star rating. The dining room was nicely appointed and we were fortunate enough to be seated next to the large sculptured marble fireplace. On to the food - it was outstanding. I dined with my two daughters and we each selected the more extensive tasting menu. This was by far our best meal in Europe during our three week trek through Italy France and Spain. Each dish was more delicious than the last and we left feeling fully satisfied in every way. They were also able to seamlessly accommodate our gluten allergy (celiac) and the menu didn't miss a beat. The meal began with GF bread, which was a short baguette. There were four flavored butters and and an olive oil accompaniment. All excellent. Next they brought two amuse-bouche to begin the meal "in the traditional Spanish style" meaning they alluded to tapas. After this the tasting menu began and our waiter explained each dish in detail. The meal was heavy on the seafood which was fine with me but my one daughter isn't such a fan of food from the sea and tired of it by about the third course. Otherwise, for me and my other daughter, each dish was a beautifully presented, prepared, creative and a delicious melody of flavors. I also ordered the premium wine tasting which offered several compelling wines including an uninspiring cava, followed by an excellent dry German Riesling with a beautiful petrol aroma. The highlight was a Chardonnay from a nearby wine producer. It was outstanding. The most interesting wine of the night was the dessert wine, which was a late harvest Monastrell. This was a truly beguilingly wine and fascinating to taste. The two desserts were also excellent as were the petit fours to end our superlative meal. Overall this was a wonderful dining experience in Barcelona!

Then i I felt like having a beverage in the BAR Area so they fabricated this story that it was "FILLED TO CAPACITY." Yet while I was standing there, I witnessed 6 other groups of people without Reservations were allowed to enter. Perhaps it is because of the Color of our Skin or where we are from??? I requested to speak to the General Manager of the Hotel and i was told NONE were available. A Supervisor of the Reception Desk did come outside to speak to us and she refused to go inside to confirm the BAR was 100% Filled to Capacity. I escalated these incidents to the Corporate Offices of the Marriott Corporation in the USA and received an UNaologetic letter stating the Senior Management Supported and Condones this behavior. The rooms have been nicely and respectfully renovated, adding modern convenience to old world charm. Our first room was on the second or third floor. It was reachable via a small elevator. The building housed residential units as well as the B&B. After our first night a family arrived who wanted to have our room as well as the one they had originally booked so they could be on the same floor as their children. Our host approached us about this and we readily agreed. We moved one floor up, to a larger and more comfortable room the children would have had. We felt richly rewarded. The room, called the Captain's Cabin, was spacious, w/ a comfortable king size bed. There was a table/desk where we could set up the computer as well as a couple of comfortable chairs for reading and relaxing and an occasional table. Coffee and tea fixings were provided and storage space for clothes and luggage was more than adequate. The bathroom was well appointed. Our host was a charming and genial Irishman who'd live in Barcelona for 30 years. He prepared breakfast and brought it to us on a cart each morning. It was delicious and varied, w/ tea and pastries and cheese and fruit, enough to get us started for the day. We were happy w/ our accommodations. The B&B was centrally located and we could walk to restaurants or to the statue of Christopher Columbus, where we could pick up the tourist bus which gave us a nice overview of the city. The Maritime Museum was w/in walking distance, as was Las Ramblas. The address is not on the website, presumably to discourage walk-ups. They give you the address when you book. We were happy w/ our stay and particularly liked the Captain's Cabin.

Bingo! Along with this, one could include Picasso, because in addition to being near the Picasso Museum, the young-ish Picasso stayed in this building in 1912 when he was pursuing a Russian ballerina. In fact, a famous Picasso image portrays the Colombus Statue in the distance with the wrought iron balcony of the B+B in the foreground. It may have been a Grand Hotel in those days, but today, it is as you read on earlier reviews which escribe the set-up well; common stairwell and elevator with office and residential use. The facade from the street is neither attractive nor entirely safe-looking, as it presents a series of aging locked and shuttered or disused entries, but in a week's stay, we never once felt other than secure. Even in the heat of August, the AC kept our wee room comfortable and we were treated to a visit on Paddy's (the gracious manager) rooftop eire. We cannot imagine staying anywhwere else in Barcelona, as the Marina View is so central, quiet at night and if you score a room with that wrought iron balcony, you can channel Picasso all night long.
