The food is fresh and absolutely delicious-huge portions as well. The refried beans were a little runnier than I prefer, but the flavor was good. I ordered the shredded beef enchiladas with a fried egg on top, garnished with tomatoes, onions, lettuce and sour cream. I'm from California, and don't get to have sopapillas at home-unless I make them-so I of course had to order half a dozen to go. They were nice enough to give me a portion cup of honey to go with them. They have wonderful red chile sauce on their enchiladas. So good in fact, that my mouth is watering as I write this review. My aunt had the chile rellenos ala carte, and she commented on how good it was and how they stuffed it with quite a bit of melty and gooey cheese. we try again to see if they're still stealing from the people and they are we took picture of the menu and want to pay the ticket for five dollars or more they said it was Tax incorrectly charged. The tax rate is 8.07. I'll talk to other people who said they've been ripped off. I think that's enough to get a case for for the state attorney general office. We decided to eat here today for our second time. The green chile was good and about medium heat. The red is made from powder chile and is just okay. I had huevos rancheros with green. The eggs were cooked perfectly. My partner had Chile Relleno plate ... he said they were tasty but the rellenos were a bit too long in the deep fryer as the batter was really dark. Sylvia had a ground beef burrito smothered with red. She said it was good. My brother had a Monster Burger (1/4 pound beef patty in a tortilla smothered in red. He liked it and the fries he got were Fresh. When we first got here the dining room was busy...not to many seats. The tables were sticky but we got some place mats put in front of us. It's a tiny restaurant right on Main Street in Belen, NM. They were very busy when we were there. The food didn't take too long, but they brought out chips and salsa while we waited. Salsa was excellent, but the chips were a bit stale. Fresh chips would really complement the salsa much better. The rest of the food was really good! The sopapillas were fresh and warm. Yumm!! I sat down and ordered. The service was friendly. The menu is bigger than the restaurant. She was very patient, even though it didn't take me long: 3 stacked enchiladas and ice tea. Check this out, here's where it gets interesting. The enchiladas came with 2 huge, fresh and warm sopadillas. She also bought honey, and chips and salsa. The salsa was delicious. The best I've had in a long time. The lunch was huge. I have enough left over for a second meal. I had cheese enchiladas, and it comes with rice and beans. It was fantastic, and very friendly. Four of us stopped for a Monday dinner in this small, family run restaurant. We loved the friendly hometown service that was fast, with freshly made food that was piping hot. There was a minimal amount of tables and could imagine you may not get one during a busier night. Two plates ordered were the chili relleno plate (5); one with red sauce and one with green. I ordered the quesadilla al a cart (no bean/rice) with carne avodaca (5) topped with green sauce. This dish is laid out like an enchilada with plenty of cheese and topped with just the right amount of fresh lettuce and tomatoes. I was not familiar with carne avodaca (sp?) which is a mexico-style pork and would probably not order again although very flavorful. The last plate was the no carb plate ordered with your choice of meat, shredded pork(5) that had large chunks of meat and plenty of red sauce, cheese, lettuce and tomatoes. The best part of the meal was the freshly made basket of sopapillas that comes with every meal. Would definitely go again if lived in the area. read more

Highly recommend! you must try this if you're in the Belen area Huge bowl of hot salsa, fresh chips to start your adventure, followed by your main course, finished off with some piping hot sopapillas that are are large and fluffy. Portions are humongous! I tried the flat enchiladas, my friend had the Carne Adovada Burrito, alacart (See photo) Always clean, quality food, served piping hot. When all was said and done, we left full and satisfied. But that's not where the story ends, our RV broke down in front of the place, they let us use the restroom a few times while waiting for repairs, they even gave us free iced tea and some ice water! I've lived in Belen for more than 2 years, but this was my 1st -- and sadly, only -- visit to Montano's Restaurant. Stopped in to order a takeout of small nachos. The menu listed beans, cheese, green chile and garnish for $6 and change. The manager at the old-fashioned register politely took my order and then tried to charge me almost $12. When I discovered this, her response was that the garnish (onion, lettuce, and tomato) were extra. I showed her their own menu, where it listed garnish as included in the appetizer. The manager didn't really have an explanation other than repeating she would charge me extra for those items. I'm not going to pay almost double for a splattering of onion, lettuce, and tomato; so obviously, I took the garnish off the order. And paid much closer attention to the price and her body language at this point. She then told me it would be almost $9 while reaching for my card. I just gave her a suspect look, without handing over my debit card. And she immediately quoted a price that was exactly $1 cheaper -- what it hopefully should have been. Although I'm not quite sure because I realized, after leaving the restaurant, that I never got a receipt (and the 3rd quoted price of $7.98 still seemed a little high). It was odd, too, because I detected a hint of her annoyance after catching the 2nd incorrect price. Edit: after originally posting this, I noticed another review complaining how a man was charged $12 for two drinks and a salsa.
