There are two Indian restaurants in Low Fell, but you would never know it. The Last Days of the Raj on Kells Lane makes every powerlist of best curry houses in the land, to the point where it's become a self-fulfilling prophecy; food writers use previous reviews to determine where they might review next, and so everyone always visits The Last Days of the Raj.
But this isn't a review for The Last Days of the Raj, because it's expensive for what you get. I'd argue the food is not so much higher in quality than the Monsun, a couple of minutes walk away.
Admittedly the Monsun does nothing the shake the impression you're sat in the dining room of a modern semi-detached. And the soft drinks are poured out of two litre bottles from the corner shop. But what about the food?
It's really rather good, and certainly matches up to anything the Raj can sink down your neck. The bhajis are crispy throughout, no floury gooey nonsense in the middle, the prawn puri melts in your mouth. The tandoori butter chicken teases your mouth before every bite.
The scenery isn't quite as grand as Raj, but then neither are the prices. And the takeaway special on Sunday night is a bargain - £10 will feed two of you well enough. read more
