Beef pho and Funky Monkey
Ashley E.

Trendy atmosphere with a convenient bar for singles to dine in the center surrounded by a few small, close tables. It gave off a bright and energetic vibe and was crowded at 4 pm on a weekday. Upon first glance of the menu I was surprised a little to see only one beef pho option with steak, not the other cuts of meat I am accustomed to seeing in restaurants in say Los Angeles. But it didn't matter, the steak was the most flavorful tasting I've had in any pho ever. The noodles were cooked perfectly as well, I think they might have been the best prepared I've had as well. Overall the pho is presently a little different than traditional bowls I've eaten but it tasted very properly done with authentic broth. There were really tasty other items on the menu as well. I would like to try their salads too. Many fun drink choices as well including alcohol shakes like Funky Monkey. Very good service too and they were particularly friendly.

Chicken wonton soup

One of a kind Vietnamese eatery in Berlin that I've frequented a dozen times over the last 20 years. Wonton soup is a must order. Taste have remained consistently fantastic over the years and portion size has increased! Prompt and efficient service. Cool drinks. Highly recommend!

This Vietnamese hot spot was packed even at 4:00 pm on a weekday! A sure sign of a popular place. Don't expect cozy comfortable intimate dining. Seating is tight. The chairs at the tables are simply heavy wooden boxes, and the space is painted orange with gold accents under bright lights. Servers speak German and English. A huge plus were the best fried spring rolls ever! They alone would get me back there. The beef Pho was excellent if not easy on the stomach afterwards. Or was it their chilli hot sauce? Watch out for that stuff. It's fire engine hot!

I've never been to a more hip Vietnamese restaurant than this one! The decor is dark red all around with a slight clubby-feel. Do check out the bathrooms for cool art. The food menu is simple, just a handful appetizers and only two types of pho. The beef pho is prepared with thick, flat noodles rather than the thin, linguine-like noodles that I am used to seeing. The phos come in a small or a large, which I thought was rather odd because I definitely would not be able to finish a large but the small was a kid-size! The size aside, however, the broth was quite flavorful without any of the msg-induced water craving afterward. FYI, the hot chilis that MV offers are SPICY. I thought the spice-level would be akin to red chili flakes and decorated my soup with the proportional amount, which was a big mistake as my mouth was on fire.

Cafe sa đá - Vietnamese coffee - €3,80

There's quite a large selection of Vietnamese eateries in Berlin! My sister's co-worker had told us of this place when we asked for a dinner recommendation. Upon arrival we noticed a group of people waiting I be seated outside. We can already tell this place is going to be good because of that! Looking through the window, the host saw both y sis and I, came out and brought us in to be seated immediately! Wow! His Vietnamese radar must be on! :P Yes, we were given the stink looks by others still waiting in the old to be seated. No, I do not blame them. :P Walking into this bright coral restaurant, a giant photo of a young man with his arms crossed it portrayed on the wall. What stood out was his huge biceps. Is this a dinner and [gun] show kind of dining? :P I'm guessing this man in the photo is Monsieur Vuong. Everything else about the decorum of this restaurant was modern and quite chic....I like it! My sis and I came with one other co-worker, a German local who has never tried Vietnamese food! And because of that we ordered: CHA GIO - €5 Imperial rolls with shrimp that came with a wonderful dipping dish sauce. This was different in a great way than what I have back in the states. It comes with 4 deep fried crunch rolls that were delicious! A great appetizer to share! GOI WAN TAN - €4,60 I don't think I've ever had vietnamese dumplings before. The dumplings were buried under a wonder salad with sweet fish sauce. It was tasty! Something new for all of us! GLASS NOODLES SALAD - €7,20 Mixed with the same kind of salad this dish also came with glass noodles and tender white chicken strips that was quite lovely. SPECIAL OF THE DAY - CHICKEN CURRY - €7,60 I'm no fan of curry but this was good because the curry flavors were subtle. The sauce and rice and chicken mixed so well together. This dish had so much wonderful flavor! So happy we chose the evening special! As for drinks: SHAKE - THAM CAM DELUXE - €5,80 Banana, pineapple juice, coconut milk, and white rum. This ice blend drink was more of a banana piña colada smoothie with a strong rum mixture. It wasn't bad and was sweet. It had a great presentation: 2 straws going though a slice of grapefruit and mint leaves, placed over the cup like a lid. Tham Cam means tropical and I feel the succeed in both taste and presentation. CAFE SUA DA - €3,80 A tasty treat! This Vietnamese Iced coffee is sweet and rich from the condensed milk. What gives it it's liquidation is the melting of the ice to balance all the sweet and bitter coffee. I'm happy it tastes like how it should. I just never seen Vietnamese coffee served with a garnish mint lead :P While dining a photog ether from a local nightlife magazine took our photo and asked for our names. When we were done dining, on our way out the same charming hostess bid us farewell with our names. We were shocked he knew ok name but he may have gotten it from the magazine photographer. Such a friendly staff! I had a wonderful time here and would recommend this authentic Vietnamese restaurant. I am impressed!

Authentic and delicious pho that relatively affordable. The ambiance is very young and loud and they are often busy, expect some wait during prime dinning hours. I like the food here but I don't think it's worth waiting for, go during odd dinning hours if you must try. The service is not the friendliest but think it's acceptable. They are welcoming towards foreigners.

Disclaimer: this review contains the opinion of a Vietnamese-American with the appropriate ethnic palate. On behalf of this restaurant as someone who is not affiliated in any way, I'd like to apologize to those of you who have dined here seeking to appease their Vietnamese cravings. This restaurant has disappointed you. To remedy the cold winter here, what better way to combat that runny nose than a bowl of Pho? Pulled out my trusted Yelp and saw the great reviews and next thing you know- Uber there! I know now that most of the great reviews were written by non-native tongues. In other words, go to Orange County (a hub of Los Angeles) first and experience what Pho is supposed to be by the hands of the largest Vietnamese population outside VN. Man I should've known as soon as we walked in that even with the small ethnic enclave of Asians in Berlin, why ain't there any Asians in here besides the workers?! The restaurant was busy with a party waiting outside, the assumption was that this has to be the best Vietnamese food in Berlin. I'm so disappointed in my people. We did not stay true to preserve our culture. Instead we watered it down and gave a compromised product to appease the clientele we serve. Look, I get it- who's cutting the check? But still, you didn't have to take it to levels of canned pasta almost. Instant Pho packages are on par here. The Pho tasted like a can of beef broth. There was no subtle taste of the important anise, any kind of traditional aroma, hell even the selection of meat that came with it was surprising! The entire restaurant was full with how do you say- Anglos. I knew there was no saving this bowl. Not honorable mentions of this meal: the worst spring rolls (if we can call it that) and goi (Viet salad) any one outside of Berlin could stomach.

Beef pho - delicious!

Best bowl of pho I've had in my life thus far. When we came in on a chilly December afternoon, the restaurant was packed. We were seated immediately though, which was great. Our waitress quickly came by for our drink orders (beer and wine) while we perused the food menu. All of us got a bowl of pho. It was AMAZING. The broth was so flavorful, I didn't have to dump in my usual sriracha and hoisin sauce. I did add a little of the hot chili oil. Be careful - that stuff kicks! But it kicks so good! We all ate our butts off while being constantly amazed by how delicious the soup was. The group I was with asked if this was going to be a 5 star review, to which I told them our waitress could probably hit me in the face at this point and it would still be 5 stars. The food was that good. But the service was also great - probably some of the best service I've had in Germany. Prompt and polite. Can't complain. Overall, I would absolutely return here.

4 stars is fair... english menu included next to the german, Vietnamese girlfriend says she would come here in case she misses Pho Bo. Too loud for groups though and don't sit at the bar (hectic and minimal space) A slight feeling of getting stalked by the owner comes up (u will know what I mean when u are here - his face is everywhere!)

Chicken red curry with rice - YUM!!
Torben B.

This is a close-to-5-star rating, where there was nothing to put a finger on with regards to the food and overall experience. Absolutely delicious, and we would come back again for sure. We had the chicken skewers and spring rolls for starters, and both went for the day's special as the main - a kind of red curry chicken, Vietnamese style. Sooooo delicious, tasty and loaded with fresh crispy greens. We ended up with the mango and mint cream, which was OK, if you like the texture of just cream. We had a beer and what was supposed to be a grape juice to go with the food, but we suspect that they mixed up the juice and gave a cocktail instead. They get 4 out of 5 because the seating was very crammed, and they served the main 5 minutes after we got the starters - a pleasant "I'm sorry" wasn't quite enough. The price tag was more than reasonable, so we absolutely recommend coming here.

So many herbs, and so oily!!

Came here a few days ago at the recommendation of a friend. Sadly, his raving review did not match my expectations. I'm a pretty big foodie and a pho lover, so I've had my share of both good and bad pho. I ordered the cha gio and the pho bo (large). The cha gio (also known as egg rolls or imperial rolls) were made differently than how I'm used to (e.g. in a wonton or lumpia wrapper, filled with shredded carrots, vermicelli noodle, shredded shrimp bits), but was actually pretty tasty and good. Instead of using shredded shrimp, Monsieur Vuong uses whole pieces of shrimp with each of their cha gio. The use of whole shrimp gave the cha gio, while fried, a mix between a goi cuon (spring roll) and shrimp tempura feeling. It was a different concept that I actually enjoyed. While the cha gio was tasty, the pho bo was not and was a total let down. First off, no condiments are provided at the table (e.g. Sriracha, chili sauce or hoisin sauce). I asked for the usual chili sauce and hoisin sauce which I like to dip my meat in; sadly, they said they didn't have any but instead could provide their own chili "sauce", which was no more than chili peppers preserved in a vinegar/water concoction. Definitely not suitable for pho to dip your meat in! The pho broth flavor wise was pretty decent, it had the typical beef and herbs flavor. But two of the biggest turn offs about the pho broth was the amount of oil that was left in the broth and all the herbs that were used to boil the broth were left inside. Typically, when making you're supposed to use a strainer to strain out all the herbs that were used to make the broth. It was not visually appealing to see multiple star anise, red jujubes, floating around in my broth. You can't eat the star anise or red jujubes, so I'm not sure why they provide them to you in your bowl of pho here! These herbs should always be taken out when serving pho. The presentation definitely was messy and haphazard. Also, the amount of fat/oil left in the broth turned what I normally consider a fairly light and healthy meal into a heavy and decadent one. My mount was pooling with oil with every scoop of broth - not a good feeling. Lastly, I am used to having the side vegetables/garnishes to be provided with a bowl of pho. Here at Monsieur Vuong they don't provide that. Instead they mix in a few strands of bean sprouts in the broth, along with a bunch of cilantro and green onions. I asked my waiter if they had basil, which after showing what a picture of it was, was told that they did not offer basil. So, from my experiences of the pho here can be summed as an overly oily, messy broth filled that while has pretty good flavor, but cannot be enhanced or augmented with any condiments or side garnishes. Eating pho should be an individual, customizable experience, where you tailor it to your personal preferences and likings. However, Monsieur Vuong lacks this and was a big disappointment. If you're hungry for pho, I'd probably go else where! Not worth the hype in my books.

This is the best Vietnamese I have had in Berlin* because: Monsieur Vuong is the proliferation of creativity under constraints. Vietnamese restaurants are not going to taste authentic by the pure fact of being in Germany, so instead of creating diluted dishes as many restaurants do here, why not take liberty and turn it into a positive- create new concept / modern Vietnamese cuisine. (*withstanding my pending visit to Kanstrasse in Wilmersdorf to try Minh Trang.. can't wait!). I have tried Hamy's, I have tried many other viet stops in Berlin which were all... ok (usually it's some strange fusion of 'thai' and 'vietnamese', and usually they are missing all the core vietnamese dishes one would expect to order). I come from Los Angeles and New York, and my family came from Vietnam- I typically eat Vietnamese a few times a week, and I was very impressed by the dishes we ordered at Monsieur Vuong. -Cha Gio fried spring roll blew me out of the water. Shrimps batter fried in shrimp chip mix (I've never had this combination before!)- when combined with dipping sauce = heaven. -I tried the two soups on their menu: Chicken Pho, and the Camh Niem (think i got the spelling wrong). Yes these are modified flavors, but I like that they tasted cleaner, and the vegetables were more pure/modern choices but just as tasty. -Pho broth was good salty/savory flavor, and I was very impressed they used southern Chinese style chicken (tender, rubbery, with a specific taste I can't describe). -Camh Niem (or whatever it's called) was a glass noodle sweeter/savory soup with tofu and vegetables. Both were large bowls, and one is quite filling for a person. Perhaps they change their menu a lot (cause there are a lot of mixed reviews).. I admit I was hesitant to come here after having read that it was such a frequently recommended place and even a tourist trap. Rather, perhaps this is The Meatball Shop of Berlin!! Great decor and food for the price range (our bill for two was 12 € / person), and a good destination dinner venue.. good place to take someone out to. Berliners are lucky- if only we had this in New York!!

Oh yeah and we started with some shrimp spring roll-type things, only way better than any spring rolls I've ever had.

It is hard to get good vegetarian versions, since most dishes use fish sauce and you can't just substitute soy sauce and have it taste right unless you really know how to use the rest of the seasonings. Clearly, they do here. The place was very quiet, which is surprising, because it is a gem. I ordered a big bowl of soup which was new to me. It had coconut milk and peanuts with several kinds of mushrooms and rice noodles. Highly recommended. I wish I were staying longer so I can return.

As my wife is a vegetarian and I am not we always try to find the perfect place that makes us both happy. This might just be the one. Not once have I missed meat in any of their dishes. The food here is flavorful, rich, interesting, full of great textures and always presented with a smile. It beats hands down some of the more fancy and famous vegan and vegetarian restaurants in the neighborhood. To round things up: The have pretty great wine for little money.
