One word, pizza. It is close to home and unassuming in looks, but makes up for it in baked goods and the really good pizza. I've had everything from tres leches cake to blueberry muffins from Monroe and they are always spot on and delicious. The pizza is good, with a nice crust and good toppings. The toppings are not overdone and the sausage is really good. (Try the sausage, onion and pepper pizza--it is outstanding!) I recently moved to the area and finally had a chance to visit the Monroe Country Store. There is a large, gravel parking area immediately next to the store. The store has a lovely wooden porch and a beautiful, homey, wooden interior. There's a small seating area to the left when you first enter and a local Maine craft shelf off to the right. In the back, you'll find your typical convenience store items. The middle of the store has the counter area and kitchen. I had no issue ordering my pizza over the phone and the staff was very friendly when I entered to pick it up. The pizza had a soft, fluffy base with a crisp bottom. The crust was also of the soft and bready variety. The cheese was plentiful and delicious. The pie also had a tasty sauce. I'm definitely a fan of the pizza and will likely return soon to try some of the other foods! read more

We live down the road on Swan Lake, and have passed this store many times. Today, we stopped in to "check it out". Very nice inside. We were walking to the back of the store when I spotted the pizza slice dispIay which sure looked like the "real thing", and I am a self proclaimed pizza snob. I took half a pie of pepperoni and my wife got a cheese slice to take home. I am happy to say we have finally found a great pizza near us!! Couldn't be happier. They were making some great looking meatballs, so gotta try a meatball sub, next!! We'll be "regulars" now. read more

I just had the best pizza that I've had in a long time from the Monroe Village store, it was a green machine pizza and was just done perfectly. Artichokes spinach broccoli and I think a white sauce with cheese on a really really good crust. It was great. Really nice store bakery to visit. read more

As far as local Maine pizza goes, it's hard to top theirs. We're lucky to have them in town.

I can start my review by saying "Oh my goodness!" This restores my faith in believing in my theory about unexpected hole in the wall places being some of the best places to find great foods. This store is exactly what you would expect when you see it and when you walk in. From communal bench tables to sit and chat with your neighbors and friends while having breakfast or lunch to the creaky wood floors, to the small grocery area for things you forgot to get at the market. But let there be no doubt, the true magic is in the kitchen area. Nothing in this place looks new but the meals they are serving are so fresh and delicious. A simple thing as a muffin, egg, and bacon sandwich you would see at any fast food/gas station is elevated by their choice of ingredients. A large fresh English muffin, soft fresh scrambled eggs, and delicious baked thick-cut peppered bacon all for the same price as those lower quality places previously mentioned and I haven't even gotten to, what I think are the real stars of the show, the pastries! Oh my goodness, I've tried several selections and have not had a bad thing yet. I can not emphasize enough how delicious they are. All freshly made, they manage to achieve what I think every great chef should try to strive for, layer upon layer of flavors that make you want to cry as you have the last bite because it's the last bite. Of all their items, my favorite would be their line of scones. To put it in context, I've lived in Ireland/England for a few years, so when I say these have been some of if not the best I've had, especially the raspberry scone, it is from a seasoned and experienced perspective. Absolutely fresh and delicious, perfect texture, a lovely crisp exterior with a melt in your mouth interior full of flavors the you can actually identify. After a bite or two the full fresh raspberry flavors would follow the delicate pastry flavors and you find yourself saying "there it is." I found this experience in several of their pastries, including their delicious whoopie pies. Though I am loath to share such magnificence as it may make it more difficult to enjoy such wonderful delights, they do deserve the attention for their gifts thanks to Mark and Christine provide us each morning on a limited basis. Fall, 1977. I forged a note at school saying that I was allowed to go to the Monroe General Store to buy lunch. I took my .50cents, walked down the street, and bought the most amazing comfort food of my youth, an Italian Sandwich, made in a hot dog bun, wrapped in saran wrap, filled with cold cuts, pickles, lettuce,and topped with American cheese. As I write this, my mouth still waters for the taste and texture of that gotten by deception treat. The Monroe General Store had always been the epicenter of a village of hard scrabble survivors farmers, dock workers, teachers and so many others got their coffee, Bangor Daily News and Republican Journal at the General Store. There was ammunition and fishing gear for the hunters and anglers who were trying to keep the family freezer well stocked. Winter 2014. The General Store of my penny candy and .22 caliber youth had been closed for years. And now, the General Store has returned to serve my hardscrabble hometown. The hardscrabble life is different now; Monroe has Satellite TV and at least one working cell tower. With Prius and Subarus replacing many of the Ford and Chevy Trucks that filled the parking area. Mixed in with those hard scrabble survivors are the occasional bank president, artist, editor and retired military brass blending into the patchwork that has always been Monroe. For me, it has been decades since I last shopped there. My heart skipped a beat as I parked my car with New York plates at the side of the store, near the river. I slowly ascended those few steps haunted by Ice Cream Bar and RC Cola memories. I opened the battered screen door stepped in and looked around: My childhood touchstone was changed, evolved. It's a General Store and Cafe. I am no longer a sad kid forging notes at school to be able to be alone with my favorite sandwich and RC Cola for lunch. In the almost 40 years since, I grew up, my tastes changed, and lucky for me, my childhood General Store evolved with me. The Wicked Rooster Cafe has a menu that is modern, delicious and still caters to comfort. Home made pizza, pasta, hot soup.. and oh the sandwiches. For dinner, we call to order a delicious pizza, I drive to the store 20 minutes later, and the pizza is ready, to complete the meal, I pick up some wine, hard cider and beer from the eclectic, well represented racks of wine and shelves, swipe my debit card, and I am off to enjoy a night of convenient, delicious food with my family. It is comfort food for the soul. Brought to you by artisans who are charging local prices. The Alice Waters/Mark Bittman "eat simple and local" movement was being marketed in my home town. The place where decades earlier, eating local began for me, when we had to pull the carrots from the ground, and weed the potatoes has returned. Now eating local is organic gardening, Artisanal local cheese, local milk, local ice cream, local beef jerky, and local pasture raised meats. These all remind me that I was raised in a place of hard work and quality. The General Store is still the heart of the town, after years of dormancy, it is healthy, vital and adapting to our now global village. I can't wait to go home again (But I'll wait 'til after the winter is long gone). Thomas Wolfe was wrong. Not only can I go home, but I can bring the city folk that I love, and they will feel right at home, because finally, farming is appreciated in the big city, it is all the vogue, and I can tell my flatlander friends that they can hang out in Williamsburg and pay way too much money for a PBR, or they can come home to Maine with me, eat amazing food, drink some great wine/beer/cider, look at the stars, and be happy that the rural lifestyle still sustains us. read more

A new store opened up in this sleepy little town after years of closure. I went in and felt like I was at home. Local products, meats, produce, super friendly staff. I had never had a Reuben, and I am now in love with them! They make a fantastic sandwich! The Pastrami was also great with the house mustard. Great beer selection and they love to sell local which I think is fantastic. They are very friendly and great for the community. My grandfather even brought in his dog to say hello. read more
