Advanced Guitar Repair

I am an over 70, rusty guitar player, and while I performed in several bands throughout my life,…read moreguitar was never my instrument... I was always the keyboardist. That said, I plunked and strummed as a sideline, mostly to entertain myself. In recent years, I decided that hauling around a keyboard was just too much work. I wanted something that I could carry up and down stairs and toss in the back of the car. I had a 55-year-old acoustic guitar that had seen better days, but it was also an old friend that I did not want to say goodbye to, so I went to a local music store to see if there was anything they could do to it to get it in better playing condition. While it exceeded their repair department's capabilities, they did recommend Rick Reiss, and Advanced Guitar Repair. They gave me his card. I called him and an appointment. I knew when I walked into his shop that I had made the right choice. There were so many tools, all of them organized and ready to use. There were specialty tools as well. Some I did not recognize. It was obvious Rick knew what he needed to do his job. He quickly assessed my guitar and admitted that while he could restore it to a satisfactory and playable condition, the work required would be both extensive and expensive and unless I wanted to have it done for sentimental reasons, I might be better off putting the funds towards a new guitar. Which is exactly what I did. While I appreciate the famous names in guitar brands, spending thousands of dollars for a great guitar at this stage of my life did not make sense. I decided on two good quality mid-range instruments... a Taylor acoustic and an Epiphone electric. I took both to Advanced Guitar Repair. The way I looked at it, with Rick's expertise, I can have the playability of a $3000 guitar for a third of the price. Not to mention that a $3000 guitar would still need some amount of setup to play as well. Rick asked how I wanted them to play and let me sample his guitars to help me decide. Now my acoustic has the action and playability of an electric and the electric plays like butter! In case you like technical specs, he did fret leveling, replaced the nut (with bone), and did all the steps of a standard guitar setup. With my arthritis, I prefer lighter gauge strings. Rick did all his work to accommodate my choice. I was (and am) blown away by the improvements. I could not be happier with the results. If you are thinking about getting work done on your guitar, I highly recommend Advanced Guitar Repair. Just be aware that Rick is both meticulous about his craft and very, very busy... meaning don't expect overnight results. You can't rush art.

I was immediately greeted and assisted, found exactly what I needed, and was probably in and out within five minutes! Quick, friendly, and efficient service. Exactly what I needed for a simple errand, and I'd definitely come back for future music needs.

Came in to get some help for the fret buzz on my new beginner bass from amazon. Help was offered as…read moresoon as I walked in the door and the employee immediately got to work after quickly diagnosing the issue. He told me it wouldn't be perfect since it is a very affordable bass and that I could purchase a full set up, but that it'd probably be a better investment to put that cost toward an instrument upgrade down the line instead. After a few minutes of adjustments, I was offered a cable to hook up to one of the in store amps to try it out. SO much of an improvement! I wasn't even charged for the service. I wanted to look at gig bags afterward but noticed they seemed to all be in an employee only area. A staff member almost immediately noticed me and showed me their options. When I said I'd do some more shopping around and would keep theirs in mind, there was absolutely 0 pressure to try to make a sale. The customer service was fantastic and felt very genuine--no pushing to make a sale or upsell something I didn't really need. Especially as a beginner who wouldn't necessarily know better, it's so valuable to feel like the person helping you actually cares about your best interest as opposed to just making a sale. Super happy with my experience and I'll definitely be back in the future for any of my musical needs!

I've had such a great experience with Music World in Hazel Dell. I originally came in to rent a…read moreviolin, and after almost half a year of renting, I ended up finding an Eastman violin on consignment that I absolutely loved. I'm really happy with my purchase, it was a great value, and it feels even better knowing I took the time to try different instruments before deciding. The staff has been incredibly helpful throughout the whole process. I never felt pressured to buy something, and they were happy to answer my questions and let me take my time figuring out what felt right. That made a huge difference as someone who wanted to make sure I was choosing an instrument I would actually enjoy playing. One thing I really appreciate is that you can use one of their practice rooms to try out instruments. If you're serious about buying, being able to actually sit down and play before committing is such a nice option. Great people, helpful service. I'm very happy I found my violin here, and if another instrument catches my eye in the future, I already know where I'll be looking first.

Sad to report this but: I purchased a guitar from Music World this morning through the Reverb…read moresite. Took my money no problem. Waited for confirmation email to be sure that it would get shipped promptly. By end of day, still no word so I Called THEM. They told me they got my money but they don't have the guitar. Told me they would have to refund my payment. So they wasted a day on notifying me. One less day to find the guitar. Not only am I on a tight timeline, I'm retired on a thin dime. Now I have no money to buy an actual guitar til their refund clears my bank (early next week, likely). And now will need to pay for expedited delivery. The tab just went up $150 since that guitar shop charges for shipping and is across the country. Insult to injury? After our call, they quickly went into Reverb to cancel the order which removed my option to enter feedback there - where it matters. Definitely pay close attention before doing business with them. And if, by chance you do see them on Reverb, "step away from the car".
