When did Shoreditch merge with Crouch End? This place is frequented by the trendy of N8 so unless you are there to be seen you may feel uncomfortable in Monkey Nuts. It's strange as the decor is family friendly and and low key. I mean yes there are monkeys everywhere, you'd expect that, but they're on shelves around the room, the theming is unobtrusive. We only wanted drinks originally so weren't allowed into the main part of the restaurant but just remained on the sofas by the bar. This was no bad thing. The sofas were huge leather concoctions, and so comfy. I could have easily fallen asleep had the company i kept not been such fun. They are obviously doing something right because as the evening progressed the restaurant became rammed with an ever growing queue waiting for tables. It was good to be slightly removed from this chaos. Being the piggy i am, i obviously got the urge for food and the staff kindly agreed to serve us snacks at the sofas. Before i come to the food, let's revisit the staff. Good on the eye, any awareness of customer service i would say was absent. Not actively rude, just lacking any impulse to help customers. When we asked for the bill, for drinks, for food, they generally looked us at slightly confused and then after talking amongst themselves for 5 minutes came over to see what we needed. So, to the food. My mate ordered Fabulous olives. Not fabulous. At all. I ordered nachos with chorizo. The nachos came with the cheese having been missed off. A cardinal sin in my book; what is any meal without cheese? The chorizo was very tasty though. I wasn't blown away by Monkey Nuts, but i think i could be tempted back to try more of the food if there was a quieter opportunity where you weren't on show and you might receive adequate service. If someone asks me again what i thought of Monkey Nuts i probably wont waste words; i'll just shrug my shoulders and move on. SECRET TIP: I had a French Martini cocktail. It was amazing. Visiting friends in London and popped in here for our routine Sunday brunch. Quiet enough place with no real vibe that I could pick up on. Food choices looked good, lots of options and settled on the avocado smash on sourdough bread with poached eggs (as a paid extra). Was a little bit smaller than I had hoped, and covered in coriander. Lots of debates on this particular herb and although I love it, there was still a little bit too much even for me. Good avocado smash and well poached eggs, but nothing to set me alight. read more

My pal Tom has been living in Crouch End for a while now, but it always seemed so far away. So the significant others in our life going away together seemed like the perfect reason to finally visit. Tom was doing an experiment to see if he could be vegan for January: onemonthveganexperiment.wordpress.com/ , so I encouraged finding somewhere to grab a filthy burger - I know I'm cruel. Monkey Nuts as it happens, do a vegetarian sweet potato, kale and bean burger, which, with a few substitutions, (sweet corn relish rather than aioli etc) became a vegan burger. He washed it down with a coke from a glass bottle: the tastiest variety of coke! I can't condone any of that meat-free rubbish, so I opted for a double-stacked Nuts burger, hold the onion & burger sauce, extra bbq sauce on the side. I paired my burger with an Oreo milkshake which I managed to drink before the burger arrived... Unfortunately, when my burger arrived I took a big bite and got a mouthful of mayonnaise-based burger sauce. I can't eat mayo, it makes me yak, which is why I specifically ordered it without having any. Fortunately, the service was excellent and they took the burger away to make a fresh, leaving me to eat the fries whilst I waited. I was also given a bottle of coke to get the mayonnaise taste out of my mouth, on the house which definitely helped. When the new improved burger 2.0 arrived, sans mayo, there was a new fresh portion of fries too. The burgers were very nice and the decor was trendy and modern. Egad! I will never go back to Monkey Nuts. The staff were lack lustre and jaded and the food below average and overpriced. We both ordered the ribs (£14.95 each!) and side salad and potato wedges to share. Unfortunately one rack of ribs was much tougher than the other one. So much so that it had to be sawed off the bone. It tasted different to the other rack and the meat was much darker. When we asked a waitress about the ribs she listened impatiently and then said 'oh maybe that one was the last of an old batch.' Great we thought that sounds appetising. She offered to 'maybe speak to the chef' but she didn't bother. We asked for the bill and had to request the potato wedges be taken off (they never came.) It's obvious that Monkey Nuts is trading on former glories and needs to buck it's ideas up. We came because the ribs were recommended and left feeling ripped off. read more

What the h*** kind of name is Monkey Nuts, it's so obtuse and repulsive you just have to go in. They serve your basic bar and grill kind of food. It is averagely priced £6 for a hamburger £12 for a steak. There is a kids menu as well, for after you have taken them on a day of shopping at all of the toy shops in Crouch End. It is just a cool restaurant that attracts a young crowd. The best thing about it is the name really. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here but if you are in the area and fancy a nice burger then I say go for it. read more

I've been here many a time over the past 5 years and my last visit at the weekend confirmed my fears... this place is going downhill. Over the years I've tried most offerings on the menu - the Ribs (now £19.99), the array of burgers (around a tenner) and the brunches - fry-ups, eggs benedict, etc. Last weekend I had a standard burger with cheese which was ok-ish in itself - the problem wasn't really the food. The staff were distracted, drinks service was slow... no drinks service was incredibly slow - 15 mins after we sat and a few hand waves later we were finally waited on, by which time we had chosen our food too and were considering going elsewhere. It was only Saturday afternoon around 4pm so not at all packed with clientele (in fact staff almost outnumbered punters). Generally the staff looked uninspired. The atmosphere was the same and this ultimately felt the same with the food and overall experience. What a shame. read more

The food here is brilliant so with that respect its hard to not want to come back. Think american diner cuisine but done very well with generous portions and a good honest price (£6 - £15 a main). The decor and staff are also good - However not being a parent I struggled to cope with the noise and atmosphere creating by the many screaming kids that are always present here. Its through no fault of the restaurant but maybe a good suggestion would be for a separate section to be created for people with and without children. If this happened i would most certainly come back but quite frequently on a sunday when i'd kill for one of the great burgers on offer here I will instead choose to walk past. It's fine, and there's not that much more to say. That's probably not enough considering the tough competition in the area, but I am sure Monkey Nuts will continue to do well since it's got a ridiculous name and a prominent location. I like the feel of the place and the tone of the markets. Dividing the wine list into catgeories like Fine/Decent etc is a nice touch and made me chortle (not that difficult). Obvious problem with this is running into issues of trading standards. For example, I would argue that my "Delicious Olives" were not. If they had called them "Probably-from-a-tin-and-quite-non-descript-and-overpriced Olives" they would have been much nearer the truth. My wine was OK-ish, but also didn't live up to its description. In its defence, my friend's fruit martini was absolutely delicious, and the sofas near the front were comfy and good for lounging. Plus I got to hear and amazing conversation from fellow diners (Person A: "What does Steak Frites mean?" Person B: "Pieces of Steak") but I am not sure the venue gets complete credit for that. read more

The restaurant is airy and spacious with a modern décor. The portions of food are very generous and more importantly flavoursome. The wooden food boards add a quirkiness to the table as do the cocktails served in jam jars. The service is quite good but can be quite slow. This is a very kid friendly place and gets very busy and overrun at half term and weekends. The prices can be steep but it is based in Crouch End so it is to be expected. Monkeynuts is a steak house and wine bar which is a meat lovers delight. Though there are some vegetarian options the focus is on burgers and steaks. The menu is largely American themed and, though we didn't realise until after we'd ordered, it also comes with American-sized portions. Not straying too far from the name of the restaurant the decorations are monkey this monkey that from the mini plastic monkeys dressing the drinks, to the barrels of monkey nuts, to the stuffed monkeys spread throughout the joint and to the various monkey pictures. Kind of cute really. My friend and I both opted for ribs and shared sides of onion rings and potato wedges. The ribs were massive (strangely in contrast to the shot glasses we were given to drink our tap water!) The bones on the ribs (beef ribs) were the biggest I've ever seen prompting me to wonder whether they had come from a small dinosaur rather than a cow. For the first time in probably quite some time I couldn't even finish half my ribs. Disappointingly we left a whole heap of onion rings and potato wedges too (both of which were delicious.) At first neither of us were going to take the leftovers home but our waitress seemed so disappointed that we 1. couldn't finish and 2. didn't want to take the leftovers home that I buckled and took my leftover ribs to the fireworks then home. I quite liked our visit to Monkeynuts. Good service, very kid friendly (not that it is high on my list but could be good for some) with their crayons and colouring-in placemats some of which are displayed on the first floor, decently-priced food, availability of root beer and tasty food. I love this place as it's local and genuine and independent. It's unashamedly American and I love the music and the posters of American bands all around. The staff are always great and friendly, they have a good happy hour and although the food isn't totally amazing they do a good burger and ribs and such. read more

After the loss of Pick More Daisies (RIP) I needed a new place to call home in Crouch End for my infinite burger appetite. Monkey Nuts won out. The burgers are good, not great but the chips are decent, good size, good food. I mainly go during the day so don't see the masses of kids. Normally I'd give it a three but the amount of times I've bowled, hungover as f******ck and demanded the brekkie is beyond countable. All the dishes are great and have saved me from the worst of the morning after. They never mind that I go in alone and the coffee is damn fine. Heard it's been slipping but when it's personal they're still top drawer for me. Cheaper than Banners as well. read more

I'm surprised that there aren't any "current" reviews of Monkey Nuts. It's a reliable enough, family-friendly, eating spot in central Crouch End with good food, relatively attentive service, and a range of beverages (yes, that means milkshakes for the kiddos if you so desire. And wait for it... Cocktails for the mums and dads! Yes!) that'll make you smile. I've had steak here before which is passable (there is "aged" meat and a-g-e-d meat, and this variety could hang for double the time in my opinion), the burgers are good, nachos are good, ribs are okay. There are colouring crayons for the kids +menu. Staff are approachable. There are a teetering tower of high-chairs, so you won't be sitting with a bub in your lap. They have Sunday papers, peanuts you can shell, a bar you can sit at if you want to shoot the breeze with the staff. Not everyone is en-famille, there are lots of couples having a meal so don't be put off. This place ticks a lot of boxes. read more

Food and drink was great. That's where the good ends. Service was ridiculous. We ordered drinks which were brought 1 at a time over 20 minutes. Dessert was brought out for 2 of our party and mine came 20 minutes later. If the restaurant was heaving, the slow service might be understandable. However, it was half empty and the service was still slow. The food and drink was over priced and they added a service charge. Probably because noone gives a tip of their own volition. We have been relegated to the 'comfy' chairs as the table I self selected was apparently reserved . . . no sign of punters anywhere near it and 10 minutes later still no one . . . not to mention no sign on table depicting it's 'reserved' status. Conclusion I draw here is that the table is not reserved, however, my lone Corona is not costly enough for be to deserve a table on Saturday miday. read more

I visited this place for the first time with my friend when I had just moved to the area. The place looked great on the outside and it was happy hour so we figured why not?! The staff seemed really friendly when we walked in, and we ordered some cocktails. They were very tasty and we proceeded with ordering some food. We ordered burgers (my friend has the BBQ, I had just the normal). They were okay, mine was not amazing but my friends was quite lovely. The fries were not the tastiest (on par with burger king, dare I say). I'm with everyone on the customer service side of things here. It's a bit of a hassle trying to get their attention in order to get food, drinks or the bill as they seem to forget about you rather easily (we were seated by the till area, which you'd think would be a good place to be for service!) We were actually figuring what to give them as a tip when it came to our attention that the bill already includes its own service charge. Maybe this is why there can get away with not being as attentive?! Well it really put me off anyway. read more

We have been to Monkey Nuts on a couple of occasions but only eaten there once. The food is fine (steak well cooked and flavoursome and fries tasty although lukewarm), however, the service and general organisation is poor. On the first occasion we pitched up on a sunday afternoon without a reservation - no one greeted us or engaged with us when we arrived: we had to go looking for someone. Our request for a table for 3 was met with some astonishment and then real confusion over whether a table was or was not free. After being left none the wiser, we left after a few minutes of unattended waiting. The second time, we did get to eat although again service was patchy at best. Having been told to take a seat for the ten minute wait until our table was ready and being presented with the drinks menu, no one then came to take a drinks order. When our table was ready we were beckoned over to it across the room rather than brought over (a small point but not it did not make us feel valued customers). We ordered drinks and food (shared starter and steaks) at the same time. My beer arrived after a few mins (great), our steaks very shortly afterwards - before my fiancee's cocktail and our starter (not great). When we pointed this out, we were told the kitchen had made a mistake and all food would be brought out at the same time. The fact the starter did not arrive for a further 10 minutes suggested it had simply been forgotten. When it did arrive, it was tasty enough but we were not in the mood for humus with our steaks. Also, when she brought the humus, the waitress made a slightly bizarre comment about being "scared to bring anything else over to our table". Odd. Instead of the relaxing meal we had been hoping for, we felt like we were being rushed and the meal was indeed finished about 40 minutes after we entered the restaurant. No adjustment to the reasonably pricey bill or "discretionary" 12.5% service charge was offered, despite the obvious mistakes. This place is not about fine dining and we weren't expecting that but the service needs to be much better. You can have an informal steakhouse atmosphere and still give your customers great service. Monkeynuts needs to do a lot better. We won't be going back. read more

Despite trying desperately to like Monkeynuts, with its lovely interior and convenient location, I must say it is one of my least favourite places to eat in Crouch End. A menu of burgers, steaks ribs etc promises much but delivers mediocre fare at an inflated price. 2 adults, one child, no starters or desert with a beer and a coffee nearly £60. On the three occasions I've ordered the special, it's been unavailable even as early as late afternoon. The crèche at the rear of the restaurant is to be avoided if you dislike inattentive parents allowing their children to run around whilst you're eating the lacklustre food. The service has delusions of adequacy, and to be included on the bill is quite frankly ridiculous. Honestly, go somewhere else - this place is average at its very best and an awful dining experience at its worst - at a price that is totally non commensurate with the quality. read more

Unhelpful staff and service. After ordering two buritos, waitress came back saying: they have only 1 left. How come?! Isn't it freshly made in the kitchen? Chef didn't give a damn about making them at 7pm on a Tuesday evening. Staff is lacking manners, professionalism and communication skills as well as customer service skills. Had a birthday dinner in Money Nuts today in Park Road with my son daughter and two gran children. The service to get seated and offered drinks before you can put your bag down was excellent, however from thereon it went down hill....... The kids meal came within 20 minutes, followed by our starters after a further 15 mins after that, there was a 45 minutes wait for the main course. At that stage the kids were ready for desert and the playground. We asked the waitress how much longer, her reply was the chef has so much orders, waited a further 20 minutes our meals has finally arrived, x2 rump steak meals and a rib meal. First thing to mind, don't mind waiting for a good meal. Placed in front of us was 3 plates barely a hand full of skinny chip and a steak the size of a regular burger you find in a McDonalds hamburger, the plate of ribs was pure fat and grizzle that could not be cut and a hand full of chip too. these meal was clearly not worth the long wait. The waitress came over and asked if everything was OK, I voiced my concerns which she agreed and said she will pass to the manager, 5min later a lady I assume was the manager came over and talked about weighting the burger I mean steak that was served and how sorry she was they are that size, considering the length of time waited, she left and 2 minutes later a bearded man came over and asked is everything OK, at this stage now I was sick of talking and the what you call dinner in front of me was getting cold I replied get a update from the waitress and manager who just left, his replied he doesn't want to listen to Chinese whispers, I replied my food is getting cold and talking to three members of staff is not going to help. If you want a good size steak go to Harvester, they do not serve you steaks the size of a regular burger and let you wait over an hour and a half for it and non fatty ribs .. If you want a good filling meal Go somewhere else or Mac D's. read more

I have just been to Monkey nuts in Crouch End, it was the worst experience of my life in a restaurant as I vomited and couldn't finish my meal. I ordered the burger meal with my partner with a glass of red wine. The wine had an awful taste ( vinegar...), like if it had been opened for long time.. We obviously didn't finish our glasses as I my stomach started to burn... As we had already ordered we waited for our burgers but to be honest I would have rather left...I started to eat my classic burger which had the taste of old bread but the worst I think was the one of my partner who took the nachos one. I didn't need to taste when I saw her hace, the cheese apparently was old like if it had been remelted again and again...The only good think was the chips which seemed to be fresh cooked. Suddenly I felt like vomiting and imagine in restaurant if I had to vomite in front of people.....then I did all my possible to keep it and discretly I rejected the food from my mouth into the napkin...I then went to the toilets, and I am not going to describe it as I am scared that going to be censured.... At the moment to pay I told to the waitress that I thought there was a problem with wine and that I felt sick. She went to check the bottle and came back telling that everything was fine and fresh....I couldn't believe it !!! This place is like/loathe, I suspect. Heavyweight American diner-style food, geared to Crouch End thirtysomething parents of small children. Menu is burgers, steak, ribs, chips and combinations thereof. The main dining room is very, very, very noisy. Waiter wanted our orders the minute we sat down. A "medium-cooked steak" bled all over the plate. A creamed spinach side-dish - three quid! - arrived as a handful of spinach, not quite wilted, sat in a puddle of cold single cream. Really hated the place and this is why: Not a busy afternoon and we were seated at the table for 2 which was en route to other tables and waitress constantly swiped my hubby's chair going past. I would understand if it was busy. Food just OK. Service is bad; apathetic waitresses without any real eagerness to serve a customer which is fine but forced 12.5% service charge is added to the bill automatically. I asked for the bill and the waitress forgot after leaving us for ages, then brought a menu for coffees. I reminded her I want a bill and she said she forgot. Fair enough but after that we waited to pay as she was wiping tables. By this point I felt asking her to take service off would delay us further. With a meal we asked for tap water which came in a bottle with glasses of like 50ml something a toddler would drink out of. It was ridiculous and I had to refill for every drop. But service is my pet peeve actually, pretty non existant so they really should rethink the automatic charge on the bill otherwise people will feel motivated to leave reviews like mine. read more

Such a shame that the staff have such an attitude. I used to go to Monkey Nut's quite regularly with friends who have kids. It was great for an easy eating kind of place. I always thought the staff and food were good and never had any past complaints. So it was such a disappointment tonight. My boyfriend and I decided to meet up with a friend and grab a low key christmas drink. We opted for the special Mulled wine and mince pie for £6.95. When our order arrived we each had a mug of mulled wine with a sorry looking half a mince pie. We questioned this and got snapped at by the general weekend manager She was so rude to my boyfriend after he simply just questioned why we had half a mince pie. Rolling her eyes she answered 'God well if your going to get technical, that's how we serve them'. Then stomped off and reluctantly told another member of staff to give us the second half of the mince pie they'd cut off ! After that we were made to feel really unwelcome and even heard her moaning to other staff members right in front of us. We were shocked by how unprofessional the staff were. Being ignored when wanting to get the bill and when paying there was no please or thank you. So our christmas drink wasn't as pleasant as it could have been. We will not be going back. read more
