This review is long overdue. Today I've decided to share my experience here at Locstar with…read morePaulette. I came here 5 years ago to start my locs. We started on the wrong foot, and ended on a despicable note. Paulette took a look at my 3c curly hair and insisted that it could not loc up with the coils I wanted. The other loctitian in the room objected to what she said, but Paulette shushed her. I felt this was wrong because armed with knowledge about safe washing, I felt my hair would remain in coils and lock up. I showed her a photo of my thick curly hair grown mid back. She proceeded to sell me on the idea that the only way my hair would lock was with her $400-$500 loc extensions that I stayed for 8 hours to put in. She wanted me to drive out for regular retwists for upkeep. At the end of this service she asked about my ethnicity. When I told her I was Jamaican and black she seemed shocked, and I wondered if her assumption that I was mixed perpetuated her incorrect assumption that my hair wouldn't lock. I lived about an hour away at this time, and could mostly only make it during rush hour, which meant I could not drive for regular retwists. This she knew ahead of time. It was also not not my desire to. I've cared for my own hair since age 8. At the time of this experience I was 24. I know my hair. I retwisted my hair myself between appointments. The extensions were quick to slip during the day even though I left them untouched except when twisting my roots. I came back a few times to fix the slipped locs. When I came back for a retwist, I asked her to keep retwisting my hair in the direction I previously had begun. You would've thought I said I hurt somebody. In the middle of a busy salon room, she stopped, and proceeded to literally loudly berate me in front of customers (she was .incredibly. rude) about doing my own hair. I was shocked at her behavior. The person next to me getting her hair done even looked at Paulette and said something about Paulette having to "teach me right." Excuse me? When I got home I proceeded to remove every extension she put into my hair. And I started over-- my way. Here are photos of the 5 year locs that couldn't establish without her $400-$500 extensions. 5 years in, they are almost touching my butt. I haven't lost a single one. If Paulette treats her customers anywhere near how she did in the past, I hope this review highlights a necessary area of where retraining is needed. You don't treat people like that, and you don't know the hair and head of somebody you met 3 times better than they do. They've had their hair their whole life.

My daughter has long, beautiful and healthy manageable hair that wanted her hair straighten for a homecoming dance. She had her new baby while doing my daughter's hair and told me it'll be an hour. It was much longer and I even entertained her baby in the stroller. Very unprofessional but we were hopeful that she would do a good job. You can tell she isn't trained properly and I see why she wasn't booked at all on a Saturday. It was last minute decision to get a silkpress and the stylists on styleseat was all booked so we went with a deep Ellum location praying. Unanswered prayers and a complete waste of money. We normally pay 145 plus tip for this same service bit it lasts 2-3 weeks. Akeba is a joke of a stylist. I tried reaching out to her previous to leaving a review to sort of get an explanation for the nappy silkpress. She says I DO GOOD HAIR IF YOUR HAIR IS HEAT TRAINED. I wish that disclaimer was on styleseat. She also scamming customers because you pay outside of Styleseat so I was unable to leave her a review on there. I paid another way. She knows she's not right and I'm sure the other stylists know she's not a good stylist.

From start to finish, the customer service was unwelcoming and unprofessional. I also did not receive what I specifically requested: waist-length stitch braids, with knotless braids in the back and curled ends. My braids stopped right above my bra area, and when I mentioned the length, she stated that it was because of the curled ends. I understand that the curled ends can affect the overall length, but that could have been a simple fix with better communication. If you felt the braids needed to be braided longer to achieve the length I requested, you could have simply communicated that with me and let me know the if there was any additional cost. Unfortunately, because of both the customer service and the fact that I did not receive the style I requested, I would not recommend this stylist to anyone else, nor would I return. ‍

I have been getting Dominican blowouts my entire life.** I first went because the salon advertises Dominican blowouts. However, the results did not match what I expected from that service. The blowouts here typically only lasted about one day. I continued returning mostly because it was easy to schedule appointments since it's a one-woman business. After some time she began coloring my hair. While the coloring was initially better than the blowouts, the overall quality gradually declined over time. For example, during blowout appointments I was sometimes not placed under the dryer, which is usually a key step in a Dominican blowout. I eventually stopped focusing on the blowouts and mainly came in just for highlights, sometimes even urging her not to put me under the hairdryer because why bother. Despite consistently asking for bright blonde highlights, I noticed a pattern where the color sometimes came out darker than what I requested on some visits (it seemed intentional). I communicated my dissatisfaction and I was met with blame, unawareness and passive aggression instead. She had to fix my hair two days after coloring and highlighting (with more highlights) causing more stress on my hair-strands since it was done sloppy the first time. Another uncomfortable aspect was that personal conversations I had shared in the salon were later referenced in a way that felt inappropriate to me. After that experience, I regretted sharing personal information with her, but it's okay, what comes around comes back around. I also observed situations where other people's children in the salon were scolded by her, which felt unprofessional in that environment. Overall, the declining quality of the services and the way concerns were handled are the reasons I will not be returning. I hope this feedback helps others decide whether the salon is the right fit for them.

I had been feeling pretty blue for awhile because working from home and pandemic had been taking a toll on me. Not getting dressed anymore and only seeing yourself look grungy isn't the best feeling. Then I was recommended to Marin. She works magic. My time with her was so valuable to me. She gives you 110% of herself! Not just her time! She made me so comfortable and I really enjoyed learning about healthier/more eco friendly options for my hair. She starts the whole process by asking about your hair history and what your goals are. Then she brings you in for a hair consultation which is greatly informative. She doesn't BS you with anything either; she tells you exactly what to expect based on your hair goals. The appointment itself is so fun! She really gives you an experience. She doesn't just do your hair. Her salon is so chic and has the best vibes. I think my appointment was 5 hours long and the whole time she kept me smiling (even when my whole head was covered in foils). When she was done I was floored. I loved everything about my hair. I have never gotten so many compliments in my life. I am so so so happy with my hair, I can't rave about her work enough. I will continue to have Marin do my hair for as long as she will have me! Ladies, save yourself the time and money; just go to Marin instead of trying any of those Groupon deals or cheap options. She is the best and will give you hair that brings your inner joy out! Thank you Marin!
