A lonely lighthouse…read more The first Monhegan Lighthouse was built in 1824 but was a cheap and flimsy thing and was replaced by a stone tower in 1850. The lighthouse is historical significant because it was the last lighthouse designed by the famous lighthouse engineer and architect, Alexander Paris. The lighthouse is 47 feet tall but since it sits on a hill the beacon is actually almost 180 feet above sea level, making it the second tallest in the state of Maine. It's made of rough granite and looks like it can survive just about anything. The lighthouse still has the huge fog bell next to it but a new fog signal was constructed on nearby Manana Island shortly after the lighthouse was constructed. The lighthouse is easy to reach once you get out to the island and has a museum in the old keeper's building that is open during the summer. The lighthouse tower itself is usually closed but on occasion the museum opens it to the public. The views from the top of the hill are wonderful and it's a great place to view the old Monhegan Cemetery, the wild ocean or just watch the fog roll through. A Lovely and simple lighthouse that is going to be around for a long, long time.

At one point, trembling with rage after chasing my family in his mobility device, he advised my husband, small child, and myself that the $10/pp "suggested donation" was mandatory and due before leaving the vestibule. This was the 4th time he approached me about paying his "suggested donation." I had every plan to pay before leaving but didn't know whether my husband or friends had already paid something and wanted to catch up with them. He followed me and my son around the building to confront me repeatedly. He further accused my family of exploiting his hospitality and screamed at us for failing to pay (we had both assured him we would pay the suggested donation before leaving). The guy is a nut with an anger problem and I can't recommend taking a child. Avoid.

Problem solved with the Maine State Museum. It does not look from the outside that this might be a hidden gem, but it certainly was. From the old train to the operational mill tucked through several floors inside, you really get a sense of how things were working back in the day. Overall, the museum is not the fanciest around and might be a little dated, but if you take the time to read the displays and walk the whole museum, you will come away being glad you made the stop.
