This is a gorgeous museum featuring many of the great artists of Maine. Each gallery was beautifully curated with pieces from the museum's collection plus those on loan from elsewhere. Of course seeing Andrew Wyeth's egg tempera paintings was a highlight, but also getting to see his watercolors was a beautiful exercise of contrast. We also enjoyed going to see Jamie Wyeth's collection in the church gallery space across the street. Totally unexpected find in Rockland ME!

This was an hour away from our base today. Well worth the trip. They have a senior discount but no veteran discount. Active military only. I Don't imagine many 20 year old Sailors coming Here. This was all Wyeth and Tice art. And oriented to New England. I liked it a lot, but I would like to have seen other artists too.

This museum features a good collection of artwork from 19-20th-C modern and contemporary artists inspired by the energy of New England and Maine. It would be a nice 1-hour stroll for most, maybe 2-hours for art connoisseurs. The galleries around Rockland also offer inspiration for travelers.

To anyone cruising to Rockland: Yes, it is worth waiting for the tender. Not only is the town's food delicious, but this museum is such a gem. Much of the art is from Maine artists, which is a fitting tribute. The room of Chinese Zodiac is breathtaking when the light reflects off the gold. If you are coming with backpack, they do ask you wear it on one shoulder which on one hand makes sense... On the other hand seems like there's potential for danger.

While vacationing at my in-laws house in Maine they purchased tickets for us to attend the Andrew Wyeth Experience tour. It included full day access to all the Farnsworth exhibits but the best part was the guided tour out to the Olson house owned by Christina Olson from Wyeth's most famous painting, "Christina's World". He did many of his most famous works in that house and of the house and surrounding area. The Farnsworth has copies of those works set up next to where they were painted or from the same perspective lioking at what he saw! Our guide took us through the museum and then by van out to he property. She has been with the Farnsworth for over 25 years and knew the Wyeth family personally. She gave us great insight into not only the paintings but the life of the artist and his subjects. Not cheap at $100 each but I would highly recommend this tour.

My pet peeve with local museum is that most of them lack focus. They try to be a little of this and a little of that and a whole lot of nothing. You leave feeling a bit confused. This is NOT the case with the Farnsworth. It has a laser sharp focus. It tells the story of this scenic coast and the artists who have called it home and visited Maine. You will leave the Farnsworth with an appreciation and respect of the area artists and the land. The museum was opened in 1948 with money left by William Farnsworth. The museum is in the center of town and has been a catalyst for Rockland to change from an industrial hub to the cultural hub of this area of Maine. The museum has wonderful collections of all three Wyeths, Alex Katz and sculptures by Robert Indiana. During the summer of 2012 they had a wonderful exhibit of Frank W. Benson and his impressionist paintings made during his time in Maine. He used his daughters and wife as models and the exhibit had some amazing pieces in it. I also enjoyed seeing the original frames on some of the pieces! In the Wyeth building they had a great exhibit comparing the works of Jamie Wyeth and Rockwell Kent who both lived in Monhegan and painted there. It was interesting to see two artists who painted at different times on the same island and how they interrupted the place. The museum is made up of three buildings with a nice sculpture garden in between. I find the main building to be just a little confusing with the levels. It does not flow as easy as I would hope it would. However it's a great area museum with an important collection of some great works. The cost to get in is $12.00 with a combo pass of $17.00 that includes the Olsen House. I love that local residents are free. I think it's important for museum to share what they are with the people who live there and I applaud them for allowing in residents for free. The museum has a large gift shop with a lot of information on the artists and a great collection of cards. They also seem to have an active education wing that does a lot of art projects with children and teens. The museum seems to be alive and doing all the right things. This is one stop that should not be missed on your visit to Maine. You may not want to give up an outdoor day to see a museum, but Maine does get a lot of rain and if nothing else, make this your rain day activity! Rain or Shine the Farnsworth is a wonderful museum.

Maine Lobster Festival - Concentrating on my technique to crack this 3 lobster dinner

The Festival is located at Rockland's Harbor Park, is easy to find on Main Street. There is FREE parking at South Elementary School (30 Broadway, Rockland, ME) where a free shuttle bus will take you downtown to the Festival. Buses run every 30 minutes or less. Entrance gates are located on Main Street and Park Street. It was sprinkling our first day at the festival therefore the lines were nonexistent; loved it! I was here for the Lobstah but there were quite a lot of food vendors if I wanted to have fish, chicken or pork. A lot of drink options as well, boba, beer, lemonade and plenty of other soft drinks. We purchased the 3 lobster dinner for 85 dollars it came with a corn in the cob, hot drawn butter, slaw, bib, salt, pepper, 1 napkin, 1 wet wipe and a plastic wobbly pick I'm guessing to aid with getting the lobster out of the shell(useless). We also got a Shore dinner for 59, which came with 1 lobster, big steamed clams, corn on the cob, chowder of your choice, they had about 5 different types, we got the haddock, it was chunky and had a lot of flavor. They sell lobster crackers for 8 dollars shaped like a claw but they are also useless without a real handle and once you get butter on them, which it's inevitable, they get slippery and you have the 1 thin paper napkin to work with. Anyway, BYO cracker and napkins; Messy transaction but lots of fun! They have a tent with lots of arts and crafts. Local artists showcase their work and it's all available for purchase. I saw a few ladies selling knitted items and home made jewelry too. So many beautiful things, you're sure to find something for everyone to take home. All people working here are volunteers and they are sweet and friendly. I plan on returning for sure. It was a super chill and fun experience. Loved it!

I was a little disappointed for the most part in this festival, personally I was expecting more…read morelobster options than a main tent and one very bad frozen lobster food truck. I expected a larger variety of lobster food items. But there was a tent with hand crafted local items, something I enjoy and a bounce house area for the kids, although a little overpriced. Another take away was the lack of seating areas other than the main food tent, if you did buy food here there were little to no areas to sit and eat or take a break. All in all we had been trying to get to this festival for years, but once was enough.

The museum started as an online museum where it found international popularity for more than 10 years, before its CEO and Founder (an AMAZING woman named Patricia) retired to Maine and turned her passion project into a full-time labor of love with its own physical footprint. The museum is small and is comprised of just one room with various displays and an area with small souvenirs you can purchase to help support the nonprofit and its mission of chronicling and remembering the impact animals have alongside humans throughout naval history. There is ample free parking in the area and entry is free (but there is a box for you to make a cash donation if you're so inclined.) The Colby College Museum of Art is located on its namesake's beautiful and bustling campus. The modern, gleaming glass structure makes for a striking contrast to the traditional buildings surrounding it, and might give one reason to think this is a "modern" museum of art, which it is not. CCMA holds a surprisingly eclectic ensemble of classical and modern works. Even more surprising (considering the plethora of works presented) is the fact that there is no fee to enjoy this museum! I was really impressed with the expansiveness of the showrooms -- every piece had a lot of breathing room in which to display itself -- and the number of galleries to explore. This museum certainly rivals some of the great museums I've visited throughout my years of traveling (both here and abroad). And the fact that it's free, on a college campus, is even more astonishing to me! And there were "firsts" for me, too: A special collection of curated works by the artist Eastman Johnson -- I'd never heard of him before -- that was not necessarily my style of art -- I lean towards modern abstract, which there's plenty here to relish! -- but was astonishingly realistic and beautiful in a very rough-and-tumble American-way. I thoroughly enjoyed it! In sum, our visit to Colby College Museum of Art was thoroughly worth the hour's drive to Waterville, and I highly recommend a stop here should you ever find yourself in Waterville, ME. Excellent!!!

There are some gems in the permanent collection and strength in particular areas (eg works by Alex Katz). If you truly love art, you will probably find an interesting special exhibition or two on display when you visit. What is the point in having a museum like this? As Picasso said, "the purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls."
