I really wanted to love this camp. My 5 year old son attended summer camp for a couple of weeks on some days. Although his counselor CJ was great, and the pickup and drop off was organized, there were some hiccups with snacks that I had ordered from their lunch program that my son didn't receive and some vagueness about whether the parents should be providing snacks or not. I was willing to overlook that again given that his counselor was on top of it, very courteous and caring. However, when I picked up my son last week, on a typically hot, sunny afternoon, as soon as he saw me, he desperately pulled at my shirt yelling, "Water! Water! I need water!" He was so upset. Of course, I was very unsettled but tried to calm him, and asked him where his water bottle that he takes to camp every day was. He said he had lost it after the pool in the boys bathroom. I ushered him toward the water jugs tent nearby and asked the counselors there for a cup, which they handed me, and gave him some water which he guzzled. Obviously I was very confused about why no one had gotten him water. He told me that he had told his counselor Swordfish "23 times" that he lost his bottle and needed water. (CJ was not there that day apparently). He said they checked the boys bathroom but it has been locked and checked the lost and found but the bottle was not there. My son said that they "tricked him" because when they took him to the water jugs to get him water, they told them they had run out of cups so he couldn't have any. Excuse me?! We walked over to Swordfish to talk to him about this and he was passive and indifferent, I was so perplexed! But I kept my cool. He was like to my son who told him that he had asked him a bunch of times for water, "Oh, did you tell me you were thirsty, sorry about that, buddy." I very politely said something to the extent that it was really important to provide the kids water in this heat, and again he just apologized robotically, nothing more! So I went to talk to Michael who I guess manages there, and told him very politely about the situation and I was amazed at his blase attitude about it. He actually got a bit defensive and tells me that the water jugs are available during lunch. During lunch?? Lunch is at 11:30 and it was 4:45pm! And anyway swimming was after lunch. What does that have to do with anything ? The dismissive way he handled it make me feel extremely uneasy. My son is 5 years old. He runs around like crazy in this heat . He was so thirsty that it made him completely disregulated! And all these guys have for me is, yeah sorry. What's more is that my son later told me at home, where he had a major meltdown and was completely off all afternoon and evening, that they showed him something "really really scary" at camp. Of course, I was all ears as my pulse elevated, keeping a calm mama facade. He said in the arts and crafts room they watched a video of a superhero who flew into a building and crashed and turned into a skeleton! Whaaat. First of all, why are they watching anything?? I can put my kid in front of the TV for free at home. Secondly, why are they showing young kids anything like that? And without prior parental permission?! Oh and the kicker? We found his water bottle when we got home. IN HIS CAMP BACKPACK. So these counselors have a 5 yo kid begging them for water and saying his lost his bottle, yet they can't take a moment to LOOK in his bag?! No way am I sending my kid back here. read more

My family has attended Monarch afterschool camp, day camps, and portions of summer camps for more than a year now. This review is long overdue. Monarch afterschool feels like the best kept secret for afterschool programs. I say this after trying 2 different afterschool programs that were on campus at my daughters' elementary school, which were severely lacking. Here's what Monarch gets right above all over programs: 1) The Counselors actually know my kids' names and genuinely care about how they are doing as humans, 2) They handle every incident with care, professionalism, and empathy. They know how to use discretion when discussing a sensitive subject about how an incident occurred. They don't shame kids, they focus on guiding and teaching. 3) They are responsive to concerns or questions that come up anytime. 4) HOMEWORK ACTUALLY GETS DONE. This is huge. Other programs fail at this regularly. In the rare occasion homework wasn't done, it's usually due to a missing sheet or something out of their control and they are quick to give you a heads up so you're not blindsided when you get home. 5) My kids get to make friends and build community across the greater valley region, not just their school. It's a good change of scenery after a day of school. 6) Great activity programming that is intentional and well communicated every week. 7) Awesome optional programs like gymnastics and rock climbing that can be incorporated into their afterschool routine. 8) FLEXIBLE SCHEDULE! You aren't committed to everyday of the week. Great for accommodating Dr appointments or other extra curricular activities. I can't speak highly enough of Geoff and the Monarch counselors. I get teary eyed thinking about how much my kids enjoy attending the program and how good the counselors are. They actually enjoy their jobs, working with kids and being good role models for them. We wanted to love Monarch, but unfortunately the staff and counselors did not provide a welcoming and friendly environment for my kindergartener. This set the tone, and made drop off very difficult each day. My child did not want to go on most days, and with the refund policy, this made for some wasted money. Please do a better job training your counselors on how to engage with the younger kids. Smiles, eye contact, greeting the child when they arrive, feels like such basic knowledge for people working with kids. Unfortunately, these were not qualities in the counselors. I can say after at least 5 summers (plus winter camps, sleep overs, etc) at Monarch that this is a top notch camp. It is not the cheapest option around but you get every penny's worth. Monarch Camps takes our daughter under their care and has her thrilled the whole summer so much so that she shares with us the variety of activities for hours on end and how fun it is. She has participated in 2 consecutive summer camps and enjoys the field trips to the aquarium + the bus trip, the pool, the games and the sleepovers with their tents feeling like a "big kid", no parents! If you are just looking for babysitting by someone who isn't much older than your kids, this camp is perfect. However, if you are looking for a real camp experience, I suggest you look elsewhere. Everything was very disorganized and the "counselors" all seemed to be very disheveled. My kids told me that the counselors would either be on their phones or talking among themselves throughout the day. Be wary of the positive reviews because they sent out a message offering a chance to win a free week of camp in exchange for "positive" reviews on Yelp (as well as other sites). read more

It's funny and sad that the other two reviews on here are from unreliable and bitter people, due to their own negligence they hear what he said and she said and think they can write a review trashing a summer camp. Monarch is bar none the best summer camp in the Valley, not only are most of the counselors here teachers and trained educators but they are more than that in that they are mentors. Some of these kids don't even have solid mother/father figures at home and especially the younger ones end up looking at their counselors for guidance. Even young people and children are stressed these days in the hustle and bustle of the world we live in. Instead of blaming their own bad parenting skills, people blame teachers, educators, counselors, or entire camps...look at yourselves before you judge others. In every camp in every social setting there are things that are out of peoples controls and one bad experience does NOT qualify you to criticize the work of others. That being said, Monarch is a sports camp and children do get hurt..but at the price that they are trying to do their best in succeed at a certain sport or activity they didn't know or are already aware of their talent in. They learn fundamental and practical skills in all sports from archery to basketball and everything in between while learning how to handle themselves in social situations outside of school and that's the ultimate goal of any summer program. While I do appreciate the Camp Director responding to my comments he really failed to address my larger issue which was the lack of overall engagement with the children. During drop off the counselors looked less than excited to be there, many were on their phones and looked half awake. Pick up was such a scene! You are literally wandering through a mass of kids trying to find your child. There has to be a better system - I haven't seen it done like this at any of the other camps our son attended. The counselors were always just standing around and the children were just left to their own devices. I absolutely get that this camp can't do anything about the heat and do their best to make sure the children are safe, but I would urge them to find more appropriate solutions. The gym where all the children are at the end of the day during the heat wave was still incredibly hot (even with the fans). After trying many other camps this summer for our child this was definitely a low. It was his least favorite camp and we ended up cancelling the second week because of that and our displeasure with the lack of engagement of the counselors and sending him somewhere else. read more

It has been a few years here and I have to say agin... this is real day camp with people who care and kids getting to have great experiences. My kids love the staff and the only complaint I have is that some of the kids are brats (raised by nannies the rest of the year and then sent to camp in the summer), but this is unavoidable. The staff and supervisors, especially of the specialty camps, are so knowledgable and laid back. This place provides a wonderful experience without all the bells, whistles, and high prices of some of the fancy camps. You will love this place and the people involved. read more

Brilliant! This was our first year doing summer camp - my son is six - and this was a really great, fun experience for him, and from our perspective very consistent and reliable. Today is his last day of camp and on the way there this morning he said , "Daddy, next summer can we come to this camp again". Can't really get a better endorsement than that. Lots of outdoors, some variety with the different types of camps he did over the weeks and a weekly field trip that he enjoyed - especially the one's to Zuma beach, guess you can't really go wrong with that! From our first meeting with the leaders at Monarch Camp, we could tell that these were adults who view their campers with respect and caring. Logistics and safety during pick up from school are serious, followed regularly, and spelled out for parents. There are enough activities and choices to allow for many different interests and abilities. Jason is friendly, professional, calm, and patient. One thing I would change is the hour long homework time; I feel it's too long, and as more elementary schools move toward following the research of less homework, this amount of time is probably 1/4 to a 1/2 too long. We had heard about this camp from one of the parents in our son's class and thought we would try it out. I was a little nervous because my son is 5, but man, he LOVED it. He went 3 days for winter break and literally hasn't stopped talking about it. We have now enrolled him in the after school program and he's so excited to start. The counselors are really great and enthusiastic. The kids don't play with ipads and phones all day. As a matter of fact, they ask that you don't bring them! They did different fun activities and crafts and got lots of playtime in. I would totally recommend this place. read more

Paul, stop lying. You and I have had this discussion about the high school "volunteers", there had been several times the 14 year olds were left alone with the kids, no adults. And in 2 weeks our group went through 3 different group leaders, you are consistently understaffed. Don't "sell" patents on something you are not. For some, you may be fine- but the lack of supervision is a MAJOR issue. As to the swimming, again - your not being truthful. Either the "volunteers" couldn't get the little ones out on time, or it was just one 14 year old trying to handle 8 little ones. It was so bad I wouldn't come back for the "freebie". read more

Our daughter has been going here since Kindergarten (she's in 2nd grade now). I credit Monarch with helping her be comfortable with sports. She was more timid initially, but after the first summer, she was willing to play any sport! And, she did rock climbing. She's tried a different camp every summer so that is great for her, too. I researched 10 or more camps and we do attend zoo camp on occasion on got game for single day camp, but Monarch is superior for long term camp. They have fantastic facilities (particularly if you want to compare them to LA camps) and great counselors. They have been around for a long time, and their safety record is excellent. I will be sending my son there this summer. I will say that early morning drop off could be improved for young 'uns that are shy. My son is shy and young so he sticks to me. The counselors aren't great at distracting him like his teachers are. This was at holiday camp. I'm hoping that at summer camp, he'll get used to it. read more

Our 7-year-old loves this camp! Some of our reasons for signing him up: 1) Get him out of our hair -- I mean, keep him entertained and engaged during the summer, 2) give him a variety of activities or sports to experience and maybe find something he wants to continue and 3) learn to swim and feel more confident in the water. The Monarch Day Camp (the regular camp) offers all of that, a period of group "swim lessons" in the morning and period of free swim in the afternoon, plus weekly field trips (movies, beach, aquarium, etc). Unfortunately, a kid kept pooping in the pool the first couple weeks, so swimming time turned into slip-n-slide time. FYI - if you want one-on-one serious swimming lessons for your child, choose something else. This is more just for fun. While they have a plethora of information in the Parent Handbook (which can get pretty overwhelming to first-timers like us), there are a some things they don't tell you: 1) Have your kid use a backpack for all their stuff, swimsuit, towel, clothes, etc. Pack a lunch in a soft lunch box and pack a snack in the backpack. They collect and refrigerate lunches. I also recommend including a bottle of water, even though the camp provides beverages. Pack a plastic bag for their wet towel/swimsuit. 2) When you drop-off your kid, you have to sign them in. There may or may not be signs telling you who to see, but ask around. There are usually four people outside the fence with clipboards. Find the one with the alphabetical section you need (A-F, G-M, etc.) 3) On your first day, you definitely want to go inside the fenced-in field with your child and take them to the tent you were just told to go to. Wait for and find your child's counselor. Find anyone teen to 20ish looking person in a camp shirt and ask. They may not appear until almost 9 AM. This is a great time to introduce yourself and, most importantly, your child. Ask questions and get out of their hair. There are probably 10 other parents stalking them, so you should try to be the "easy" parent, which I'm sure they appreciate. 4) Pick-up is a little different. Once you park, go inside the field, find your child and go to the 3-4 counselors with clipboards on the inside (likely under a tent). When you show your ID and sign your child out, you will get a token that you have to give to the person at the gate, which will allow you to leave with your child out. I'm guessing you need a token for each child. 5) Apparently, they hand out wrist bands on Wednesdays for kids going on field trips. Make sure you get one for your child as you sign-in on these days. Yes, they were somewhat disorganized, especially on our first day (which was their 2nd Monday of camp and the first Monday after school ended). But the counselors, once we found them, were very nice and understanding, although easily distracted by all the parents. After a few weeks, it was cool to see that a lot of the young counselors knew by son by name. I think it makes him feel good that they know him and are happy to see him. TIP: Label everything! After one week, our son has managed to lose 2 towels and a pair of shorts, even though they were labeled. They have a Lost & Found you can rummage through during the Drop-Off period the next day. I think the administration often gets overlooked so I wanted to review my experience working with Jason (specifically). I registered my boys late for summer camp and wasn't able to get my youngest son into the Classic camp due to space. We tried Gymnastics and Soccer and eventually was able to get into Classic (where all of his best friends were). I called the office weekly and for some reason - Jason was always on the other end! Guess I was just lucky. He was curious, helpful and accommodating. He was always patient - even when I called and fussed over not getting what I wanted (this was their busiest year and there was no room for his age group, no matter how many times I pleaded). He always did his best and it showed. Thanks to Monarch and to Jason for a great summer! We'll be back next year (at the beginning of registration!) read more

Unfortunately, I am here to warn parents of young children that this camp on my opinion, is not the best option. My daughter is 5 years old and attended this camp for a week. Here are my concerns with the program: 1. There's not a lot of supervision of young kids. When I came in the morning for drop off, there wasn't any counselors available that I could drop my daughter off with. Every morning I would see A bunch young kids just crawling around the dirt under the tent with no particular purpose. I had to wait for 15 min for counselors to finish their song signing in the morning with the group of other counselors so I can at least go and find one and hand my daughter off to them and give them her lunch to be put away. 2 the same story is at pick up time. Unsupervised young kids just slouch around the field with no particular purpose. No one is doing any activities with them. Most days my daughter would collect bugs off the ground when I was picking her up. 3. They spend a lot of time outside and in this heat, it is important to stay hydrated. My daughter is 5 and needs to be reminded to drink and they don't do that. I have asked them multiple times to May be have a rule that every 30 min it's a water break and got nowhere with it. I was under impression that the counselors lacked responsibility and were more concerned with having fun with other counselors than anything else. 4. 2 out of 5 days, there was an issue with My daughters lunch. One day it fell on the floor because they were eating on the ground and the second time, the counselor told my 5 year old to throw half of her lunch away because lunch time was over!!!! 5. I wasn't thrilled with their choice of field trip to take them to the movies. Ok, but they didn't tell us to give our kids money so they can buy popcorn. I'm a first time mom and this is my first kid at the camp, so I don't know all the rules so it would be nice if they mentioned to get be kids money because my daughter felt left out when other kids were buying popcorn and she couldn't. 6. A boy on the bus was hitting my daughter's head and pulled her hair. I asked her why she didn't say anything to her counselors, she said they were sitting at the front and told kids not to get up while the bus is in motion. When I raised the issue I was told by the supervisors that it's not true and my daughter must be making it up. 7. I bought up all these issues to 3 different people at different levels of management and even talked to the director of the program (Jason, I believe) all I heard back was excuses and how my daughter should have spoken up about these issues. I kept reminding them she is 5 and they can't treat kids of all ages the same way. She is not 10 or 15, she is 5 and if they accept kids this young, they should provide a proper lever of care and supervision. stay away if you have young kids. read more

We tried this camp this summer with high hopes and moderate expectations. After almost 6 weeks attending I had to pull our 5 year old out and go somewhere else. There are nice people there but it's large and hectic and considering how long they have been operating still don't have basic things covered like making sure kids are safe from extreme heat and have easy access to water. This week 3 days in a row during a heatwave with temps up to 100 they had not properly set up a safe place indoors for the kids. My son could not access water easily when he needed it and was told he had to wait for a counselor to take a group to the water fountain outside. How do they know how close he could be to heat exhaustion or dehydration? How hard is it to provide a water jug inside the gym? I wouldn't trust them to keep track of how much time went by or notice he was in trouble until it was too late as it is always very hectic. A friends daughter this week got sick from heat exhaustion at another camp and wasn't even exposed like my son has been. The new camp he is at has easy access to water no matter where he is. There have been other problems with how big and hectic and disorganized this place is. But this was the final straw, I just don't trust them to watch out for my child so we had to leave. read more

Your child will have a great time from all the field trips, but consider the following: It's basically kids taking care of kids. Teens and college students are paid the minimum wage to supervise your kids all summer. My daughter caught Pityriasis Alba on her face while at this camp- probably from the nasty public swimming pool. There is little actual instruction. Great camp! Camp songs, beach trips, pool time, rock climbing wall, archery, young counselors that really enjoy the kids, being encouraged to be creative (theater camp), and playing new games (all sports camp). My 4th graders spent two weeks at Monarch's classic and specialty camps and really enjoyed their time there -- no screens, no math, just pure summer kid fun on a great campus. This Review is based on the Winter day camp I sent my 6 year old son there, he loved it! Every time I would pick him up he was a happy camper! He suffers from asthma and the camp definitely did their part at keeping me aware in case he had an asthma attack or wasn't feeling well. The staff is young, friendly and seem to enjoy working with kids. I will definitely be signing up my son for summer camp this year! My son is definitely looking forward to it! :-) The Price is very reasonable, the care is great, the times are also great for working parents, the camp also provides extended care which works great for me! We love Monarch Camp! My daughter (6) attended all summer and really got a lot out of it. The camp's been around a long time, so they've got it all down pat. The counselors are all well-trained, young, friendly and energetic. They all seemed to know my daughter's name. The complimentary before- and after-care was important to me as a working parent, because so many of the other camps I looked at didn't accommodate my working schedule (Out at 3:00? GMAB). Monarch is a little more expensive than the camps that don't have a pool, but the pool was so important to us. And they make it affordable with a very easy and convenient payment plan. The administration is great at communication and responds promptly to emails, listens to feedback and tries to resolve any issues that may occur. They were very helpful with accommodating a couple of early pickups we had to do at the last minute. The weekly field trips were amazing! All the great kids places that I don't have time to take her to. Now I don't have to, because she got to go with Camp! I also really like that at pickup the children were all having fun enjoying largely unsupervised free play. Not every moment of their day needs to be micromanaged! Don't get me wrong, there were plenty of counselors around keeping an eye on things. But nobody was telling the kids what to do and how to play during the aftercare portion of the day. I never had trouble finding my child at pickup (except for the one time she was in the bathroom). They are all in clearly-marked tents with their age groups. Like I said, they've got this down to a science. We chose to do the classic day camp instead of a specialty camp because we wanted her to have a well-rounded experience where she got to try a lot of different things. The fact that they swim twice a day (class/practice in the morning and then a "free swim" in the afternoon) was important to me because I really wanted my daughter to become a strong, confident swimmer and she DID. Next year, though, she wants to do Tumbling camp. She'll still get to do the free swim in the afternoon, so she'll get the best of both worlds. I'm so happy and relieved that she can go to Monarch Camp all summer and have a blast while being safe and looked after by loving professionals. read more

We discovered Monarch Camps this year, just as my oldest is old enough to attend summer camp (starting Kinder in Sept). I didn't know what to expect as a parent from summer camps so first step was to attend the orientation. My picky husband, who attended the orientation with my daughter, came back with raving compliments of the facilities at LAVC and the staff/program itself. He said "Let's definitely do this!" Easy online set up, credit card payment, and lots of information on the web to start off, including picking your days/weeks/programs/etc. Flash forward to my daughter's first week, she's in LOVE with camp. The counselors are extremely upbeat and friendly, the drop off and pick up is well-organized, and I feel my child is safe and secure there. She loves swimming, the field trips, learning new songs, all of it. I particularly love that the girls and boys are separated by age and gender and that the counselors are the same gender as the kids (makes her feel more comfortable changing into swimsuit, etc.). She raves about the field trips, getting on the bus for the first time in her life, and the wonderful friends she's making. Brooke and Millie (her counselors) have left a lasting impression on her for their warmth, upbeat, and caring personalities. We will definitely return next year, and the year after with my second daughter. The environment and the ambiance is just heartwarming and I'm glad we found Monarch Camps! In the sea of 100s of kids there, I still feel my child receives special attention and is well taken care of thanks to being divided into small groups per 1 counselor). My child has been attending Monarch Camp's after school program for the past six weeks and I've been incredibly impressed with the program. He is picked up after school and brought to the facility on the campus of Los Angeles Valley College. The counselors are professional and enthusiastic. He gets help with home work and plenty of playtime, both structured and unstructured. They swim twice a week and that has really been the highlight for my son. Another great perk is that they offer full day programs on many days that LAUSD is closed. There's so much to do and he always has a great time. read more

Pros: For your money your child gets to be in a specialized camp like gymnastics, Spanish immersion, soccer, or other category. They also get to swim every day in the afternoon, most camps charge for swimming lessons and here it's included. The camp also has weekly field trips to various places the kids like. The vibe is very cool when you drop off your kid the music's playing in the background and everybody seems to be enjoying themselves. The coaches are really good about putting their belongings into their backpacks, I've been to other camps where my son every day would lose a personal item. Cons: I've been to pricier camps and it's always the same thing, kids watching kids with little adult supervision which is pretty annoying because kids do not think the same way as adults. For example my son had to go to the bathroom, he asked the coaches the coaches did not take him and he had an accident. Had it been an adult they would have took him to the bathroom. My son complained about the sports camp because he was a beginner and some of the kids were advanced in the sport so they did not like that he was lagging behind. Another aspect I did not like is Communication, you can call the camp directly but reaching someone is difficult, nobody ever answers the phone the best form of communication is via email. So in case of an emergency you might not be able to reach anybody immediately. Also they bring out the kids to the field around 330 in the afternoon so even if it's 100° weather outside they have to stay under the tarps till they get picked up. read more

My son enjoyed the last two weeks of camp here - particularly learning to play GaGa, swimming everyday, the field trips, being with friends and the fact that they sell popsicles as your leaving. Honestly though I don't like that they are outside in the heat as much as they are, it's a huge camp with so many kids and no one knew my son's name, they walked all over campus and according to my son didn't do much and it's pricier than other camps I like better. Glad we gave it a go - but not sure if we will be returning. read more

I attended Monarch myself back in the summer of '92 - one of the best summers of my childhood. So i tearfully sent my own son off to camp this summer... and its a hit again. He is officially a pro swimmer thanks to the daily lessons included and begs me to drop him early and stay late every.single.day! My only constructive criticisms would be to have more organized play especially for the younger kids after the official camp day closes at 4:15pm as they can find it hard to keep up in the gaga pit. Also, some of the camp counsilors are AWESOME and but some could use a little more coaching on how to speak to parents so we feel assured ( im looking at you teenage boys ;-) ). MASSIVE shout out to the camp office who are so awesome at responding to questions promptly. We love it and can't wait for thanksgiving camp to roll around in Nov! read more

We have done every program they have to offer. It's always a win win situation. The administration is always accommodating. The staff is helpful, friendly, willing to extend themselves. Great activities from wall climbing to swimming. There trips are fun and creative! Highly recommended! read more

This was my daughter's second summer with the camp and she loved every day of it. The staff is young and very friendly, kids have access to swimming pool, there are day trips to various locations and pick up time is late. We will be coming back. read more
