Where to begin! First, the shop itself is super cute, well decorated, and I'm always finding sweet things to buy (yes, I did NEED another candle). A complimentary glass of wine or beer with my haircut never hurt either Julia is fantastic and super sweet; I'm always the super annoying person with NO idea what I want to do to my hair and she comes up with something brilliant and artistic each and every time, while still staying true to my wants, needs, and comfort zone. I'm never worried I'll leave an appointment feeling like she didn't listen to me. She's also a perfectionist which is amazing when it comes to a hair stylist. She recommends amazing products, styles my hair beautifully, and is all around professional and personable. Wouldn't trust my hair with anyone else read more

Whenever i need to look like a functioning part of society again, I always go to mona lizzys and see Julia! She always does a fantastic job on my head. I usually let her do whatever she thinks is best to make me beautiful again. She is also really good wirh beards! I have a problem with hair stylists dealing with my beard and mustache, but i have full confidence in her when it comes to my face. She is fantastic with a straight razor, too! Great salon... and julia is a gem! read more

I have been seeing Amee for years; I'd let her cut my hair in a meat locker if she worked in one. Luckily she works at Mona Lizzy's, which is a fabulous little art & crafting gallery in Normal Heights. To call this place "cute" would be like calling Ryan Gosling "average". It's on a whole new level: a space that offers salon services, quality hair products, and beautiful, quirky, hand-crafted items. Come for the brilliant and uncompromisingly excellent haircut from Amee Gould-- stay and buy your sister's birthday present, your Mother's Day gift, your fiancee's wedding present, that unique pet bereavement card you've been looking for, that dope macrame lampshade, etc. They will even host your own DIY party. Like, you *want* to have that DIY feel for your big event but you're really not that crafty...? They will show you how to DIY and bring the cocktails. How genius is that? I have a ton of respect for Liz-- that is some dogged entrepreneurialism right there. read more

I found Mona Lizzy's via Julia's Instagram page, and I have been really happy with the way Julia does my hair. First time I have ever colored my hair in my life and I am thrilled. I get so many wonderful compliments. It looks very natural and I am grateful to Julia for listening to what I want and need. I have sent my husband to her now as well for her barber skills and he is thrilled with his results, too. The Mona Lizzy staff is very friendly and they are all welcoming and pleasant. Thank you Julia! read more

Where do I even begin? Julia is the queen for making me feel beautiful. She is the only person to this day to touch my natural hair! She is so professional; she always asks how I'm doing during the appointment and if I need anything. She also made sure my cut and color was EXACTLY how I wanted it. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Thank you Julia! read more

I love Mona Lizzy's and Julia is the best! Not only is she very talented with styling and color, but she is very knowledgeable and will always be honest about what will work best for you. I usually go to her with a half explanation about what I want, and she always ends up giving me the hair that I envisioned. She really cares about her craft, is very detailed, and technical. I am constantly getting compliments whenever I go to see her! I will never trust anyone else with my hair. read more

This was my first time at Mona Lizzy's but not my first time having the fabulous Miss Amber Gove do my hair!! Let me gush about Mona Lizzy's then I'll tell you why I love Amber so much. The place is adorable!! Definitely that Normal Heights vintage vibe which I love (hence why I live in the neighborhood). It doesn't feel like a salon....all sterile and dry. Not to say its not clean because its impeccable BUT I love the vibe all the decor gives off. Now Amber. I've been going to Amber for a few months now and she is not only an AMAZING stylist but she is just a swell person. The two hours I spend there is not one in awkward silence but we always have fun conversations and laugh a ton. She is so warm and welcoming. And she's got skills!!! I came to her a mess in October, unhappy with my cut and color and now my hair is gorgeous, even when it grows out into some shaggy mess (or at least I think its a mess). I love the products she uses there (they smell nummy) and my hair is just so much happier...hence I am happier!! read more

Julia has done my hair for 3 years now, and I think I'll be lost forever if I ever have to move out of the area and find someone new. Julia is incredibly talented at her profession, but that is something you can probably find in other hair stylists as well. What sets Julia apart is how much she genuinely cares about you and your hair. I'm extremely indecisive when it comes to hair decisions, but I know I can always trust her to help me find the perfect color and hair style. She's also just super friendly and easy to talk to! I promise you won't regret going to see her and will definitely want to make her your permanent hairdresser as well! read more

This place is adorable!! I got my hair done by Amber Grove. I scheduled a Brazilian blowout It turned out amazing better than the last place that did my hair. Amber actually took her time and wasn't rushing through all my hair!! (And I have thick long wavy frizzy hair lol). She also had time to give me a last minute hair cut (which wasn't scheduled) but she took her time and it shows!!! I feel so pretty she does an amazing job!! I will be going back to Amber again!!!! read more

Lizzy gave me a great haircut for short curly hair. She was very friendly, knowledgeable, and sweet. The salon is adorable. 8 other stylists work there too. First-timers get a discount. read more

I am beyond grateful I found Julia! She is SO helpful - you tell her your vision and she matches it to a T. She is so kind, personable, patient and has your best interest at heart. The shop has an awesome feel to it and love seeing all the knick-knack jewelry, clothes and fun accessories they sell from local vendors. Julia is receptive, responsive, and GENUINE. I absolutely adore her and definitely recommend! read more

Amber Gove is the best! She is super talented! She cut and colored my hair and I love it! This place is so cute, you wouldn't think it was a salon at first sight. 10/10 read more

I highly recommend Sean-Robert Dougherty at Mona Lizzy's. I was referred to him by a friend, when I needed a fix to a terrible hair cut. He quickly turned a bad do into a ten and has been giving me great cuts for over a year now. He is a true pro, who can work with any hair types and is up on current trends and techniques. He is also just a nice guy and the shop is cute and fun to boot! read more

I have been getting my hair cut and colored for a few years now by Julia and she is absolutely the BEST! Not only is she a doll and such a wonderful person, but she is a talented hairdresser! She can do anything you ask her to. She knows the hot trends and styles in the market and truly cares about delivering exactly what you want. You can trust that you are in good hands if you see Julia, she's amazing :) read more

I bought a Groupon to get a full set of silk wraps and one for my friend. The woman was very in professional on the phone and wanted to use text messaging to book our appointments. Once I was here I waited half an hour because she said she was behind and then another customer walked in saying she had the same appointment time as I did. She then told me I messed up and never confirmed our appointment even after I showed her our text messages. She was rude and EXTREMELY unprofessional. A complete waste of money on this Groupon that I will never be able to use. read more

Charming new salon and art studio space in a convenient location. Caitlin did an awesome job on my hair. Highly recommend her and this adorable spot. They are environmentally conscious with as much as they possibly can. Using reclaimed wood in the design and looking into recycling cut hair. Check them out! read more

My son attends art class with Miss Lizzy at his preschool. He loves it and so do I, because we get some pretty amazing art from our kiddo. He's learned about color wheels, symmetry, and many other art concepts and best of all, he's having fun doing it. I am frequently asked 'Hey mom, is it an art class day at school?', which is possibly the best review there is! read more

I go here for my nails with Allana, and I would highly recommend her! I moved here about 7 months ago, and she is my go to for nails. She just recently moved here from a different salon, and is definitely worth following! Not only are her prices and attitude great, but the service is great as well! She always pays good attention to detail, and goes above and beyond to make sure my nails look awesome when I walk out the door. If one of my real nails breaks, she will even add a fake nail onto it to match the length of my other nails. She does such a great job you can't even tell some are not my real nails. Her new spot, Mona Lizzy's, is a super cute trendy hair salon that has various events and classes. Lots of light and art in the salon. Book your nail appointment with Allana! read more

I heard about Mona Lizzy's through a friend and recently took a sewing class here. The class was a 30 minute circle skirt class. I am a novice sewer and don't even own my own machine, so I wasn't sure what to expect. What I got was a really well organized, fun and easy class which resulted in a beautiful skirt which I now know how to make on my own. Lizzy had several sewing machines to loan out to students, and took the time to teach me how to use it. She's patient and a very good teacher. The class was very relaxed and fun and I look forward to taking more classes at Lizzy's studio. read more

I felt at home here the minute I walked in! I had my first hair appointment with Caitlin, who was recommended to me by a good friend as I had recently moved to San Diego. Caitlin is a warm and welcoming person in general and did such a great job with my cut. It is always difficult to try a new person with hair cuts, particularly when you have loved your previous person, but I am happy to report that the transition was so easy :) She listened to what I wanted and did a beautiful job. The experience and service was awesome, the vibe of the place is great, and I highly recommend Caitlin! read more

The cutest little shop with tons of crafty character and the best stylist ever. Julia has transformed my hair into something I am so confident about. The journey to blonde isn't always pleasant but I can honestly say I have loved every step. With patience and a glamours personality, it's only a plus when you are stuck in a chair for hours and she makes sure you are always comfortable! read more

I'm very particular about who cuts my hair since I'm always afraid a new person will not give me the cut I am looking for. I was so happy that Caitlin, who used to cut my hair when I lived in OC, had moved here and booked an appointment for a trim and colored streaks. As always was the case in the past, she was friendly and did exactly what I wanted. I'm sure the rest of the staff is also great, but since I cannot speak from firsthand experience with them, I highly recommend Caitlin for your hair cutting and styling needs. She's awesome! The atmosphere of the salon is also quite nice and well-lit. I will definitely be returning for all my future hair needs. read more

This place is amazing! The owner Lizzy takes pride in her profession. She interviewed me about my hair which no stylist has ever done before. She also gave me a scalp massage with essential oil of my choice. It was so pleasant and personable. She listens to you. I highly recommend her salon and her as stylist/artist. Her salon is is warm & welcoming and she is a stellar hair stylist!! read more

I went to a Craft and Cocktail night here and not only was it a darling venue for such an event, but my husband and I came home with some serious good gift ideas and the recipe to the cocktail the beautiful Miss Lizzy herself created for us! I would recommend getting on the email list for future craft parties (read: make a craft and drink a cocktail!) or following Mona Lizzy on Instagram to see some of the cool projects and/or classes that they offer here! Next up for me is attending one of the Yoga classes! See you guys there! read more

I had never been to a stylist before and only wanted my roots colored with a fun color. I chose purple. I was quoted on the phone $80 by the owner and then I get there and my stylist says $130. They didn't cut my hair. They didn't bleach it either. Simply put color on top of my own color. And charged my $130! This is something I could have done at home. Now I was told it would last 4-6 weeks. It's only been a week and the color is already fading. I use color preserving shampoo so it's not my products. I feel they took advantage of me. I won't be doing that again. Next time I will just do it myself. Don't go here unless you're willing to spend a lot more for a lot less. Thumbs down read more

Lizzy is one of the very few stylists who can understand my curly hair! My haircut with her was both an educational & fun experience! She's very knowledgeable & thoughtful about her work. She assured me that what I thought was hair loss is actually new hair growth after pregnancy. So much better! Her prices are very affordable too. Not only will I be back, but I also want to be lizzy's friend :) read more

Ms. Lizzy (as the kids call her) or Liz is a fantastic art teacher for kids of all ages. My daughter took her class at Preschool and I was always amazed how she was able to incorporate basic art principals and elements into the lessons for the kids - and how much they remembered it! She also so creative with her use of recycled material. For older children she really steps it up and offers such informative and fun classes that go far beyond just teaching an art project - but really study art practices, their history and impact to our society. Her enthusiasm to teach the kids and creative nature are very inspiring! Oh - and she's super awesome at cutting hair too - she gave my daughter the cutest pixie haircut that all the moms love! read more

My son attends Mona Lizzy's art class every week through his preschool in North Park and he absolutely LOVES it! He is learning about colors and how to draw and we're actually seeing an improvement! We couldn't be happier about this program and look forward to many more classes with Lizzy! If you're interested in great art classes, I highly recommend her studio which is easy to get to! Thanks for teaching Jack about art! read more

I had an appointment with Amee. She did a straight A-line cut for me and used a razor for my cut. It took longer than I was comfortable with but the results were great. She used a number of wonderful products that made my hair super soft and I love their recycle and zero-waste philosophy. She gave me some tips on how to help with a dye job that someone else completely messed up and I'll be going back to her soon for a trim and a dye job. Will update on that! read more

I'm originally from San Francisco, and due to past bad experiences, I find it really hard to trust just any hair stylist. When I moved to San Diego I researched a hair stylist that fit what I was looking for, and I found Amber. She always cuts my hair beautifully, and she does an amazing job with color. She has balayaged my hair before and did a great job. It was so well done I had no need to come back for a while because the color held up and it grew out blending in with my roots. Just recently I came in to tone my hair and cut/ tone my clip on hair extensions. I have an engagement shoot on Thursday, and I asked her if she would help me transform my hair. I was looking for a healthy natural style for my hair and extensions, and she truly captured what I wanted. She also matched my hair and extensions beautifully. I am thoroughly impressed with the job she did. She took the time to condition and curl my extensions and they have never looked better! Taking on hair extensions is no easy task, so I'm truly thankful to have found an amazing stylist like Amber. read more

Lizzy's art services are one of a kind. What something special or unique?! She is your lady. Give her an idea and she runs with it. She recently completed a scrapbook for my husband's 40th birthday and it was amazing. She was able to personalize the gift while still making it creative and fun. We have also used Lizzy for a craft and cocktail night. She came to our friend's house and we enjoyed learning to etch glass while enjoying some drinks with friends. It was a total hit. I will continue to use her services and she comes highly recommended. read more

Amee Rocks!!! I went to see Amee Gould at Mona Lizzy's on a recommendation from a friend. To say I was impressed was a understatement. She was extremely friendly and took time with me. The haircut was without exaggeration the best of my life. My jaw literally dropped. I didn't think my hair could ever look that good. She matched the style I wanted and exceeded what I thought was possible. I had to give her 2 hugs afterwards...and that isn't like me. I was transformed. Worth a drive from 75 miles + for a haircut. I have a place for life. Thank you AMEE !! read more
