The courses included miso soup, edamame, agedashi tofu, nasu dengaku (eggplant), vegan fried chicken, rolled-up crunchy tofu skin with rice, sushi rolls, and dessert. It also included house sake, which tasted like rubbing alcohol, but hey, alcohol's alcohol. Some of the dishes were definitely better than the others. I liked the "fried chicken" and the eggplant (the sauce with the eggplant was amazing!!! I practically lapped it up.) The sushi rolls were OK, kinda generic. Wasn't crazy about the agedashi tofu for some reason. The miso soup was tasty, and the edamame was pretty much your usual steamed edamame, nothing special (although they gave us a LOT of it, which was nice!) The crunchy tofu skin with rice was very bland, and my boyfriend didn't like it at all so I ate pretty much the whole thing myself. For dessert, we skipped the typical ice cream that comes with the banquet and got vegan desserts instead. It was basically a peach-flavored jelly thing (made with agar agar, not gelatin). It was tasty, but I was honestly SO FULL at this point that I couldn't finish it. In general, I liked the meal. But I think some of the flavours could be improved (especially the sushi rolls, agedashi tofu, and crunchy tofu skin with rice). I'd also just gotten back from two weeks in Japan and I'm not sure how "authentic" some of these dishes truly were. They definitely tasted like they'd been a little bit Westernized, but maybe that's just me being picky because I had just been in Japan and had such amazing food there. The two girls who served us were also very sweet and nice. The atmosphere was nothing fancy, just a cozy little place with no frills, but it was nice. I'd definitely recommend the place if you're wanting a vegan or vegetarian Japanese banquet, especially because most Japanese places use dashi or fish in almost every dish, so it's hard to find a good vegetarian Japanese banquet. Just go wearing stretchy pants because by the end of it, you will be FULL.

The service was excellent and I got more sake than I could finish for a very reasonable price. Also the ambience was cozy, funky and traditional all at the same time.

On Thursdays Jen and I meet for long meetings about a short film festival, which is hardly hungry work but always seems to leave me ravenous. Enter, Tokyo Sushi. Located on Richmond's Bridge Road and sandwiched betwixt generic boutiques and the kind of hairdressers that you just know are going to feather your hair, Tokyo Sushi is actually very good. It took a while for Melbourne's very particular brand of sushi to grow on me but now I'm hooked, and Tokyo Sushi is a big part of that nascent addiction. The menu is expansive and just different enough from Melbourne's countless other sushi places to make it a bit of a destination; while great vegetarian options such as tempura sweet potato and marinated tofu mark this cute little place out from its identikit Japanese competitors. A word of warning though, the incredible selection of sushi may make your eyes bigger than your stomach but make sure you take enough cash. Tokyo Sushi operates a strictly cash only policy which makes forward planning for a gluttonous sushi-eating session an absolute imperative.

Apart from the standard fare, they have quite a few indulgent varieties like teriyaki (chicken or tofu), sweet potato and vegetable tempura. The rolls are small to moderately sized. Every variety of roll is $2.50 from memory. This is not a value-oriented sushi place, but the quality and range are unparalleled in the local area. The staff are also actually Japanese, unlike many other places run by Chinese staff who try to fool westerners by wearing Japanese outfits.

When I came in intending to eat at…read moreHihou, it was explained that Kappo offered an omakase or chef's selection option, compared to the sushi menu of Hihou. My partner and I elected for the omakase menu paired with sake. Immediately I was fascinated by the restaurant when we were asked first to select a sake glass. There were eight ceramic cups presented, each with a unique shape and colouring. It felt like we were taking a personality test. Then we were asked to select chopsticks. Again, what could this all mean? It was exhilarating and entertaining as we embarked on our culinary journey. There were three options for the omakase menu. 5, 7 and 9 courses. We opted for the middle, 7 courses, which I remember hoping at the time was going to be enough. Mind you, every course came with a different sake pairing, and there were many courses that they left us with more than just one cup to taste. The waiter did an excellent job explaining each type of sake, answering questions and also asking our preferences when selecting the bottle. The courses were extraordinary. It was a mix of light bites such as a raw oyster with light seasoning, salad with crunchy tempura bits and a soy sesame dressing, and thinly sliced sashimi. Then came the sushi, perfectly cut melt in your mouth fish, a selection of three, scallops, octopus and other treasures from the ocean. There were hearty courses like soup, baked pumpkin, and warm crab. I purposely did not take any photos aside from a sake bottle I really enjoyed. The pairings were perfect and the food overall was so exquisite, it's hard to find the words. It was truly a magical evening, from start to finish. The ambiance is intimate yet there were enough people there for a quiet hum between courses. I have yet to try Hihou but would highly recommend Kappo if you are looking for an authentic, unique dining experience guaranteed to awaken your senses.

The restaurant itself only has a limited capacity so recommend booking well in advance, especially for weekends. As far as I am aware, degustation is the only dining option, and the number of courses (5, 7 or 9) needs to be selected in advance when the booking is made via the website. There is also the option to have matched sake/wines with each course, which is highly recommended. We went for the 7 course menu, and each dish was spectacular - the flavour combinations and freshness of the produce was outstanding. Due to the restaurant having such a small and intimate feel to it, they request that flash photography is not used inside. This is actually a breath of fresh air, not being surrounded by people taking photos of their food for once, and actually just savouring the flavours!

I felt conflicted about leaving this review, wary of spreading negativity, but this needs to be…read moresaid. I don't want to bottle it up & I need the closure to move on from this. My experience began with awe at the amazing retro aesthetics & lively atmosphere. After a 10min wait for a table (peak hour), the waiter at the door gave us a 3 seater table. Another waiter asked us if someone had seated us there, as if we weren't supposed to be there. We didn't think much of it, & said the first waiter directed us there. A waitress gave us menus & took our orders at 1:10PM, based on the timestamp on my screenshot of their Insta. I was chatting to my friend (both of us were one of the few Asians there at this point) when we were asked to move to the upstairs bench so a group of 3 could be seated there instead. We carried our own water, napkins & cutlery upstairs. We lost track of time chatting until it was already 2PM; 50 minutes had passed since we first ordered. We should have checked after 30mins, but making sure they had our order was not our responsibility. My friend checked on the order, stating that about 1hr had passed since we ordered. The waiter replied, "what did you order? I'll look into it", & later to his credit as she was walking away, "sorry for the wait, our kitchen is really backed up at the moment". Good hospitality practice would have been to apologise sincerely & fast track a forgotten order to the start of the queue. Depending on restaurant protocols, complimentary drinks or a discounted meal would have been a reasonable goodwill gesture. Upstairs, a pair of white-presenting girls had just been seated & asked me if they go downstairs to order. I told them we had been waiting for 1hr; they should go downstairs to order if they want food. To our shock & dismay, both of them got their food within 15mins, while we were still empty-handed. The white-presenting trio we were bumped from our first table for were already halfway through their meal. This demonstrated that our wait wasn't simply an issue of kitchen inefficiency. It wasn't that the food was not being cooked, they had just chosen not to serve us. I am still in disbelief about the blatantly selective hospitality existing in Australia in 2025. What is disappointing to me as someone who has had 8 years of hospitality experience is not just that they lost our order -- but more importantly how they handled it. It happens, but the way a place responds shows their integrity. As a place that calls itself Japanese, there was a startling lack of Japanese hospitality -- it was saddening to see the nonchalant attitude, dismissiveness & lack of proactivity in solving our issue apart from, "its coming soon". By 2:30PM (1hr 20min later), we had tried to remain as positive by laughing the situation off & listing things we were grateful for in life, but it was becoming too much so we decided to leave. On the way out, she told the waiter we were leaving, to which he replied casually, "oh they haven't given you your food yet?" -- no further apology or investigation on what actually went wrong. It took us until after 2:37PM for us to get a bite, from Huxtaburger instead. Seeing Reviews, it made sense the extended wait time was a regular occurrence during a busy lunch hour. What didn't make sense was, the majority of customers who had a 40-60min+ wait time were non-white. Surnames like Yang, Hutama, Jang, Teh, Yun, Yen, Singh, Ding, & Tangtanawit. Whatever the reason, this reads like discrimination as other reviewers have pointed out, & isn't a good look, especially at an Asian eatery partially staffed by Asians. Am I wrong to feel indignant about yesterday? There are worse things in life than what happened. This review is not intended to be vindictive. While these events won't hurt the business, they've repeatedly hurt customers. I hope this prompts them to improve their practices, so these issues are minimised & managed well when they do occur. While I have lost 1.5hrs of my life I will never get back, this doesn't have to happen to others. Wabi Sabi, please do better.

Review for takeaway meal only…read more We ordered 3 Don (rice ) bowls Teriyaki chicken - served with half a soft boiled egg. Unagi Eel - served with half a soft boiled egg as well. Both are fine and meets the usual expectation of rice bowls you would order in many Japanese restaurants. Vegetarian - I have to start by applauding them for including vegs that I don't usually find in other veg rice bowls. Pumpkin was sweet and added a nice element to the dish, there were lots of kimchi and became too overpowering, okra was good, and there was pickled daikon ( I think) and a fermented something that was a bit too unusual for me. No boring vegs in this rice bowl but then again it could probably do with some eggs, carrots and less Kimchi. Crispy rice with salmon sashimi, salmon roe and dynamite sauce - this was awful. Usually Im not too fussy with salmon anything or sushi pieces, but there was definitely no sashimi piece here! It's all blended like a paste, and nothing enjoyable about it. Sorry I'm just not a fan. If you are checking them out I would suggest to stick to the usual meals

She then she offered to drop it off to us but didn't sound very pleased. We ordered prawn roll (x5) for $15 and salmon roll (x5) for $15 but only got 2 of each. When I called to explain that the website is very misleading she told me it was so expensive because the rolls are made to order. If I wanted the rolls delivered I would have gone to another sushi place that does fresh made rolls for $3.50 each not $7.50. She ranted that she would refund the roll that had chilli on it (that we asked to be taken out) but nothing else and then hung up. Appalling service. Their delivery guy also called to say he was outside the front door but was at his car still so I had to go back inside to call him to find him.
