But before the appointment date we found ourselves at a bridal expo. While there we spoke to the people running the booth for that company, but we also encountered Sweet By Alfie. We were immediately drawn to her booth because of the presentation, her personality, and the fact that she offered cookies with pictures as party favors for wedding guests. We knew instantly that we wanted to get those cookies as gifts for our guests. But when we told Alfie that we had already scheduled a tasting with another company she confidently said with a wink and a smile "well after you do that tasting please give me a call and we can see who you like better." The other company was very good. Their operation was impressive, and they seemed to be cranking out a high volume of cakes. But we did not sign a deal that day because we had a good feeling about Alfie and wanted to give her a shot as well. As opposed to going to a commercial building for the tasting, Alfie baked three complete little cakes of our choosing, in her own home kitchen, and then brought them to our house. That personal touch and attention to detail made the whole experience very cozy and comfortable. We were blown away! The other cakes were very good, but these were great. They seemed to have just a little bit of an extra flavor sparkle, and the flavor pairings were unique and innovative. They also seemed to be richer and even more organic somehow. After we tasted each cake we turned to the subject of design. Instead of merely showing us some samples of what she had done she also showed us several images she had taken from the internet based on our ideas. She said that she could do anything we wanted. Within a few days she sent us a proposal. It offered a bigger cake, more creative control, and a much better price. So the choice was obvious. In preparation for the wedding Alfie not only kept in contact with us, she also coordinated with our designers and decorators about themes, colors, and the roses to be put on the cake. The whole experience and communication was very professional and efficient. Shortly before our April 7, 2018 wedding date, Elizabeth's bridesmaids threw her a big bridal shower with about 30 guests. They had decided to order a cake from Alfie for that event based on our great tasting experience. Everyone loved the cake that day. Liz brought home some for me to try and I loved it as well. It made us look forward to our wedding cake even more. At our wedding we were very excited to see that the cake looked amazing! It was exactly what we had asked for. I am a musician and I work with belly dancers. So our cake cutting was done with a giant Middle Eastern sword. As we were enthusiastically slashing away at the cake while our 200 guests cheered us on, I was terrified the whole thing would topple to the ground. But we able to slice off pieces and the rest miraculously stayed together. Alfie seems to not only be a master baker but also a skilled architect. How many bakers can claim that their wedding masterpiece stood up to a sword assault at a Celtic, Gothic, Middle Eastern, Indian, and Circus Themed Wedding?! All of our guests loved the three flavors that were offered. And we had the pleasure of enjoying a secret stash of slices set aside for us over the next several days. Yummy! Our guests also loved the cookies featuring some of our engagement photos. They tasted great, and the picture quality was very clear.
