I know this is supposed to be a review of Mofo's, but I think people need to understand a little history first. My mom was the cook in the family, and she always used to make a big deal out of Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving was never really my thing - Christmas is my jam - but every year for as long as I can remember, mom would plan a week in advance and start cooking a couple of days beforehand, and our extended family from the east and west coast would come to our house for the holiday.
In early November 2017, mom passed away very suddenly and unexpectedly. There was no Thanksgiving that year, only memorial planning, and I can barely remember us celebrating at all in 2018/2019. Holidays in general just weren't the same. In 2020 I moved out of Brooklyn after 17 years and bought a house, so since I finally had room to host, I decided to cook Thanksgiving dinner for my dad (and I'm no natural cook, but I can follow a recipe). It felt good to celebrate a little again. But this year, I just had too much on my plate - job, personal stuff, a new puppy that was running me ragged, a Covid-booster shot hangover - and I just decided I wasn't going to celebrate Thanksgiving. I had no time nor energy to plan and cook a meal, and life had just been too overwhelming lately to even contemplate it. But the more I thought about it in the weeks leading up to the holiday, the more I felt like I needed to do something, because I knew that although my dad wouldn't say it, he was waiting for an invite, and I didn't want him to have to spend the day alone.
On a whim, less than a week before Thanksgiving, I placed a Facebook post in my local community group asking for recommendations for businesses that catered Thanksgiving dinners. Someone suggested Mofo's (later discovered it was Sean himself :), and another person commented that they didn't think he made T-day food. He responded that he made anything people liked. I didn't know him at all, but decided to take a chance and reached out to him and told him my story. I laid out the basics of what I wanted - turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, sweet potato casserole, and he suggested some things - green been casserole, some mini pumpkin pies, etc. - and he quoted a price which I thought was very fair. He was so friendly and easy to chat with, and really seemed to want to make me whatever I'd like. I sent him a deposit so he could buy the food, and I told my dad that either we'd have a big spread for Thanksgiving, or some guy just ran off with my money and we'd be having wine and microwave meals for dinner :)
Sean followed up with me throughout the process, and was always accessible. I offered to pick up the food, but he had no problems delivering it (on Thanksgiving!), and boy did he show up. Dad had just arrived shortly before Sean, and Sean and his family started unloading enough food to feed an army, all piping hot and delicious. The most time-consuming part of the meal was dividing up the massive amounts of leftovers - what to keep in the refrigerator and what to freeze. Sean delivered an entire 25-lb turkey, all carved, and everything else we had discussed. All Dad and I had to do was open a bottle of wine and enjoy.
My dad commented as he left that I had completely lucked out in finding a gem like Sean (and wished he lived in NJ, so my dad could order from him!). But as good as the food was, what made it even better was the feeling that Sean really took pride in making the dinner for us, and wanted to ensure we were completely satisfied (which we were!).
I would never hesitate to recommend Sean to anyone looking to cater an important event. He was reliable, gave us exactly what I asked for, and the food was superb. My Thanksgiving with my dad was very low key, but honestly it would not have even happened if not for Sean. His hard work took away all of the stress of the day, and gave my dad and I an opportunity to just eat great food and enjoy each other's company.
On his way out the door, my dad said, "Thank you so much for the invite and the delicious dinner. Everyone needs a place to go for Thanksgiving." Many thanks to Sean for giving me the ability to give my dad a place to go for the holiday. read more
