Another great review for a superb bookstore. My 15 minute stroll to kill time turns into 2hours hunting for great books. I love how the store is organized, to the staff, and lastly the price. There two stories of used AND new books. I recommend coming here for your classics. From Vonnuget to King, you can find deals from $1-$20. I was able to score 4 classic books for less than $20. The staff here is extremely friendly and knows exactly where the book you are looking for. Not what aisle or what section, they know exactly where they shelved it. I was here today. I walk by Moe's everyday on my way home, and I really don't know why it took this long for me to work up enough curiosity (or sheer boredom) to walk into Moe's, but I wish something had compelled me to do so earlier! The selection of books at Moe's is huge, and the layout of the store is genius. Reference books (GMAT study material, in particular) next to the children's books?? This place must have been designed especially with people like me - with very, very short attention spans - in mind. I also love how there is plenty of seating, which is something I think larger bookstores like Barnes and Noble really lack. I swear if this bookstore allowed food&drinks, I would NEVER leave. The first time I came here, I didn't know that there were 4 floors of books. This time, I took my time and perused each floor. Man, I love used books although much of the time, I can usually find them cheaper on Amazon.com but I like to support the used bookstores when I can. Each floor has a different subject area and if you take the stairs, each floor has an interesting poster. So on my most recent visit here, I did find 2 books that I've been wanting to read by Chelsea Handler, not the most intellectual books but definitely entertaining. read more

Four floors of wow. Others have written about the bulk of the store, which is clean and well-lit like a new-book store. I'll focus on the top floor, where I could have stayed for hours. There's a glass inner sanctum, with antiquarian items within that were beautiful and amazing. I was filled with lust for a two volume illustrated history of the SF Bay published in 1892, but there were soooo many other volumes, including stacks of East Asian volumes that I couldn't begin to describe. The art books on the same floor were comprehensive and extraordinary. Meanwhile, Allergy Boy found about four books that he wanted in the lower floors, which kept him busy. read more

If you LOVE books then Moe's is the place to go to. It is simply a vast source of used books...from very old copies ( I have a Dickens novel printed from the 40s) to new novels that are still on the bestseller lists, they have everything. And the best part is that the stock is constantly rotating. THIS however, is a negative as sometimes when you're on the prowl for a particular piece of writing, they might have had it the day before but it is in the hands of another. But great staff and it is nice to be able to roam and peruse at your leisure without having corporate trained sales people trying to determine if you're actually going to buy the damn book. read more

I love this book store! It's truly a Berkeley institution and I'm glad it's weathered the financial downturn and disruptive technologies like smartphones and tablets! I bought many books here when I was an undergrad in Berkeley from 1989-93. On this visit, I only had a half hour to browse unfortunately. I could have stayed here for hours! So many bookshelves and book carts to look at. You just never know what you're going to find! I stayed in the used fiction area and found three books that I can add to my towering pile of books to read. I read a lot on my iPhone, but I still do like browsing inside bookstores and reading physical books. This is also a good place to get gifts for readers and writers. They have a great selection of moleskin journals, new books, coffee table books, classic Penguin books, mugs, and unusual items like the Swiss-made Seven Year Pen with an SF Golden Gate Bridge design on it. read more

I stopped by here to search for posters for my dorm room and had the privilege of browsing an amazing selection. They have tubs full of art prints, bird posters, human anatomies, old posters, and much more. The prices are very reasonable, but beyond that, flipping through the heavy dividers is a valuable experience in itself. It's like flipping through a history of the world, thumbing past a reprint of soviet-era propaganda, admiring a print of Audubon's famous bird sketches. The bookstore has four levels and a basement, along with a separate rare book collection on the fourth floor only accessible when accompanied by an employee. I wasn't able to get in, but I did get a look through the window. Most of the heavy tomes and rare posters are kept in there, guarded, as they ought to be, under lock and key. If you're ever walking down Telegraph and find that you have a few minutes, few hours, or few days to burn, drop by Moe's and pick up a book. I doubt you can go wrong. And if you need a poster, you'll almost certainly find one that fits your aesthetic. read more

This bookstore is one of my favorite places in Berkeley. Four floors of books. New stuff, a high quality selection of used stuff in every genre (even children's), in many languages (beyond basic French, Spanish, and German). Even children's in many languages! There are some bookstores that never have what you are looking for, but have gems you stumble upon anyway. Moe's has the books you are looking for, plus the gems. They also have a fair trade-in policy. If Moe's were to close, the shining light of Berkeley would fade. It's too bad Telegraph can't pull out of its 10+ years of decline. My favorite bookstore in the Berkeley/Oakland area! They have a much larger (and cheaper) selection of used fiction than the other book stores I've been to and the staff are always awesome. Solid place to find a book! Been coming here since I was a kid. Four stories of books! I seem to always find what I am looking for. Went their recently to pick up some books for my toddler son and found some cool picture books. The groupon deal i used was three vouchers each valued at $20 that i picked up for ten bucks each. So essentially I spent $30 for $60 worth of used books and it was well worth it. The inventory seems to quickly change so I check back often. read more

Friendly service, but the books were all over the place and was having a chaotic time trying to find the fantasy section. Oddly enough, I decided to pick up a random book on a random cart and it was a book about one of my favorite artists... I didn't get the book, then a week later someone got it for me for Christmas. Four amazing floors of words on pages. This is one of my favorite places in the Bay and my hands down favorite place in Berkeley. Moes is centrally located on the College Ave strip. They have a wide selection of new and used books. The place is quiet, clean, well organized and so chill you could stay in there all day. The staff are amazing. They are all extremely helpful, well-read, and knowledgeable. They actually read the books there. Going here is like a treat or reward. I love everything about this place. This bookstore pushes the envelope in ways many American bookstores fear. It reminds me of London bookstores. Similar vibe to Daunt books. If you're a reader this place is paradise. Enjoy! When I first discovered this place in high school, my mind was blown. If you love books and haven't been, a trip to Moe's is a mind altering experience. Four floors of excellence. Because it js in Berkeley, with the UC right there, it skews very academically. That being said, there is still a wide variety and a lot to explore. The staff is helpful, the items in stock change/rotate often, and it is well organised and run. A trip to Berkeley always means a trip to Moe's. There is something there for everyone. read more

An incredible literary journey! I only had 10 minutes when I stumbled upon this place and found two books that had to come home with me. What an incredible place. I love how clean and organized the store is with maps on the walls of where to find certain sections. Also, some impressive posters for $5. Oh, I should mention that both books I picked up (a Dorie Greenspan cookbook and an Alice Medrich cookbook) were on super sale and priced well-below market value. Stop in--you never know what treasures you may find. The entire store is full of beautiful books, relevant books, unique books and an impeccable childrens' book section. However, be forewarned: do not try to quickly scope out the third floor with only five minutes to spare--you'll be reprimanded by a very serious bookseller that the floor is off limits and closed! Before stepping into Moe's Books for the first time, I only shopped Barnes and Noble, or the occasional smaller bookstore only when I was on vacation. OMG I had no idea what I was missing! I came in on a whim one day, and was pleasantly surprised as soon as I stepped through the door! Honestly, the sight of multiple stories in a bookstore is enough to make any bookworm drool! The bottom/basement floor was large, inviting, and well lit, with everything fiction! There was a great selection of new Children's, YA, and Adult books, as well as used books for all ages. There was even a section for music, as well as a decent selection of posters! The staff was super friendly and helpful! They are really considerate people, and really knowledgeable. I'm so glad they just got the starting wage raised, and hopefully we can support both the business and the employees. Since I came in somewhat close to closing time, I didn't get to explore too much of the bookstore, but I know I'll be back soon, and I can't wait! read more

I admit I have a hard time saying no to a used book store and Moe's does not disappoint. I immediately sought out the poetry section (2nd floor) and was pleased to see a whole row of used poetry books. The selection is always going to change when it comes to used books but I found two books to add to my ever-growing poetry collection. I briefly looked over the new poetry books there had to offer and that was just okay, I'd like to see more books my small, independent publishers (such as Write Bloody - they publish amazing books!) but overall that section was decent. The two books I chose cost me $16 total so I walked away quite happy, I'll definitely be back when I need more poetry! read more

I have heard many wonderful things about Moe's books and wanted to support this local business since it is very convenient (close to campus). However, I am quite disappointed the handful of times I went in. The cashiers are rude, and the buy-in process is very picky. They give you little to nothing for books and are very selective. The cashiers could be snobbish and unhelpful, and even if you decide to donate books, they won't help you with that. Instead, you would have to move all the books to a designated 'shed' yourself...... And the shed is overflowing, poorly managed and organized. I hate to be that person who shops at amazon and destroys local businesses, so I would rather go to other stores like half price books for all my trade-in and buying needs. read more

What a neat book store. Used and new books fill the shelves of this multi level book shop. I was delighted to see some of my favorites from childhood here, and as a result spent much longer than anticipated roaming around each level. The staff were eager to help, yet laid back. I bought a Richard Scarry book for my grandson and made note of many others I would like to purchase in the future. This is my favorite book store in the Bay Area. They have a wonderful antique book's section on the fourth floor with rarities like a first edition copy of 1984 and book signed by Thomas Edison. Many oddball books that I've looked for has turned up at Moe's eventually. It's especially a haven for specialists. There is an enormous section dedicated to military history and political science, and the best physics and mathematics section I have ever seen at a non-university bookstore. If you are an autodidact, I recommend Moe's highly. If all sections have benefitted from having UC Berkeley nearby as much as physics and math sections, then this comment goes to anyone with any field of interest. The physics and math sections are very well-stocked, and while these are used books and may not be as up-to-date or pedagogical, it's unparalleled compared to any other book store. I've bought a few exceptional textbooks here. It's surprising to find the top books from so many fields here, when these would often be so hard to find. read more

Being in AP Lit., I prefer to annotate my books to get a better analysis of it. This meant that I needed to start buying my own books. Moe's Books has so many affordable used copies and being a working high school student, this is great for me! Not only do I always find what I'm looking for (which is surprising since my reading list for this class is long), but I love the location of this place! Telegraph Avenue has so many unique shops and restaurants and this store is most definitely my favorite. There are multiple floors and a cool archive! A quiet spot with multiple floors and great selection of material from cooking, all the fiction/non-fiction you could imagine, poetry and even music books! I loved walking up the floors to discover new material with quiet places to sit while exploring the plethora of topics and vintage books! We need to preserve these places. Quite possibly the greatest bookstore in the Bay Area. Four floors of browsing heaven, with an antiquarian book room to boot! It's especially good for finding used university press books in all subjects. New books are primarily in the basement, along with an ever-changing selection of remaindered titles. Used titles occupy the other three floors. And yes, I'm willing to make my way down Telegraph, past the IV drug users, frat boys, teenage sluts, Ted Kaczynski look-alikes, anarchists, and pinko commies selling posters in order to visit Moe's. Growing up in Berkeley Cody's books was the place to go to browse clean well stocked rows of mainstream books, stacks of hot new releases in islands in the middle, games, toys and a great kids section. Basically - If Cody's had franchised before Barnes and Nobles the world would look no different. On the other end of the block was Shakespeare's. Does anybody shop there? Then smack in the middle of the block was Moe's... Which was clearly the best place for an 11 year old to find out of print 60's sci fi and catch a glimpse of a photo book with a picture of a bifurcated penis in it. Moe's is not just a bookstore in Berkeley, it is Berkeley in a bookstore - drug induced fantasy and totally wrong body art included. read more

Moe's is a cool bookstore, especially for artsy people. It's sophisticated and you can never have enough bookstores. God knows enough of them have closed down in Berkeley already. Moe's still has the same phone number as they did back in 1991, (415) 849-2087. Why they have a 415 phone number I don't know. Sometimes I like to walk down Telegraph avenue, buy a new pipe (or in the old days maybe some LSD), get some pizza or cheap sushi, maybe take some pictures, perhaps coffee, and go to Moe's and buy an inexpensive used book. I'm not the kind of person who has regrets. My perspective on life is enjoy every moment for what it is and learn from your mistakes. But if I were to have a regret, it would be not discovering Moe's Books until my senior year at Berkeley. Moe's is everything you want in a bookstore. For starters, it has all the books you've been dying to read but wouldn't want to buy from chains like Borders or Barnes and Noble. This is a gram and paps kind of establishment I feel really good supporting. In addition to availability, Moe's is a collector's bookstore. It has four floors of pages and prints: new books, used book, hard-to-find collector's items books, out of print books, and dust-filled "I don't think anyone's opened this since 1878" books. It's all here. Last time I spent over two hours trying to choose just three books to buy. Three was my limit. My happy moment was buying a used copy of Paul Coelho's "The Pilgrimage" or $6.50. I actually love Moe's, but you know what? They don't deserve 5 stars across the board. Cons: -The majority of their used books are actually pricey. $8.50 for a used paperback Faulkner? Really? Lame. -They are right next to a little bakery that always makes me hungry with their pumped out the door cookie smells. Pros: -Excellent remainder selection--this is the reason I keep coming back -Decent poetry selection--it's hard to find a place, even in the bay area, that has a good selection of modern poetry authors. Being a cheap Asian, I can appreciate the small discount on the books here. I love books! I love to read! It's fun to come here to browse and the staff here is pretty attentive. I love this place so much that there's even a poster on my door behind my rack of tokidoki bags. I kid you not. I have an odd relationship with Moe's. That is to say, I'm never sure where I stand with them. I'm a student, so I always carry a backpack. And on some days, there's a sign that says (something along the lines of) "all backpacks must be checked in at the front." I don't have a problem with that; lots of stores do it. But when I try to give my backpack to the guys at the front, one of two things will happen: Option 1: The man behind the counter looks at me like I've smacked his grandmother, then grumbles like I've wounded him fatally, before taking my bag from me, just as the atmosphere turns quite frosty -- or Option 2: The man behind the counter tells me to just disregard the sign entirely. I think there's only been one time where there guy behind the counter just took my bag without any weird stuff happening. And, I mean ... I'm not TRYING to be a bother, really! You're the ones who put up the sign in the first place! If you don't want to deal with the hassle, can't you just take the sign down? Or maybe it's a management decision? Ooh, or perhaps one employee likes the sign, but none of the other employees like the sign, which is why it's there on some days, and missing on others? I really don't know. But it's actually made me dread going in there, not because I'm a thief, but because I can't stand those tense awkward moments. And that's kind of a shame because their selection is so enormous and I can get lost in there for hours. Uhm -- that aside! Their selection really is immense; there are multiple floors to the place, and every time I go in, I promise myself that I won't spend too much but then I find something that I havetohaveIjustneeditsomuch so I end up getting it. Argh. Moe's. You slay me. Just take my money. If only you could come to terms with your whole baggage claim thing at the front. And sometimes some of the people there might seem kinda tense or frosty, but I can understand that. Sometimes it's just how people are, or at least, how they appear on the surface, especially after a long day. I'm digressing horribly; I really want to fall madly in love with you, Moes, but there are so many times when you make me feel as though I've wronged you horribly. ;_; If only it were as simple as leaving my backpack at home! Alas, I am a commuter student, so I carry my baggage with me everywhere. read more
