After my sister's passing I contacted Modlin Legal, the company that had drawn up her will and trust. I was reluctant to hire anyone thinking I could handle the estate myself and even more so when I received a fee schedule. After much thought, investigation into what settling the estate would probably entail, and pricing other sources I decided Modlin Legal was probably a good choice. I could not have been more right. Marina Modlin was professional at every turn and helped me through the whole process. She explained everything that was going on and helped me decipher all the forms and procedures of the numerous companies, financial institutions, and government entities that had to be dealt with. She was timely and diligent in completing the things she could /needed to take care of for me. With the things that fell to my discretion, she presented the facts and options and allowed me to have the final say on all matters. I live in Utah so most of our communication was by e-mail. At one point, I became concerned with the direction things seemed to be going. Marina arranged a FaceTime meeting so she could be sure we understood each other. I received a recommendation for Marina from a coworker. I appreciated that she offered an initial meeting to see if we vibed well, if I felt that her services were going to be the best fit for me including her personality, the process that she uses, and the cost. I thought Marina was very professional, easy-going, and easy to speak to about such an important thing! Since this is the time of COVID, she offers all of the meetings over Zoom which is quite simple. She makes the question and answer session, or information gathering, really easy; she explains what each document is actually for so you can think about who you want to appoint. She has two options once the actual documents are ready, you can pay a little extra and meet her in person outside of her office to have a witness sign and she notarized the documents, with you leaving with everything completed in a nice leather bound notebook. Additionally if you would like she can send you all of the documents with instructions on how to print out yourself, have witnessed and notarized outside, then file yourself. While you might save a small amount of money doing it yourself, you then have to take care of the process yourself. I chose to pay a little bit more for the peace of mind of a fantastic lawyer, Marina, completing this step for me. Plus, it was nice to actually meet her in person even with our masks on! I highly recommend Marina for any of your estate planning needs. I went to Modlin Legal for a trust and advice on best ways to approach it. I felt she charged a lot for no real insightful legal advice. I get the feeling she plugs in her customer's variables into a "turbo tax for legal" some canned off the shelf program and just cranks out your trust. If you have a very simple trust, she's probably ok. (i.e. no kids, not that many assets) But, if you have some more complexities, go see someone that is older, with more experience. It's worth spending for the experience. She's all about efficiency which worries me. It seemed like she had more interest in getting me out the door after I paid. She seemed very short with me. I'm going to have my trust redone with someone with more experience. Many of the positive reviews are about how efficient she is... Be careful.
