I researched a handful of preschools in Modesto to enroll my 4 year old. I wanted structure and some curriculum taught and not just a full day of playtime. What I liked most about Magnolia was is wasn't on a main road with fast traffic, the play yard was on the backside of the school and they had a structured day. My daughter was over the moon excited to start school so I was happy they had room for us to enroll. I decided on 3 days a week so she wasn't overwhelmed but after her first week things changed quickly. She was anxious to go to school, she would throw full tantrums in the morning to get ready, she was regressing on her potty training and having multiple accidents at school. Complete opposite of her normal behavior. At first, I expected this, it's a new routine, there's a period of adjustment and many kids experience it. By the end of week 3, I was having serious mom guilt. She had completely broke down one morning when we pulled into the parking lot. It was like sheer fear had overcome her and she begged me not to leave her and to take her home. I spoke with her teachers and the Director and although they said she was doing fine, I wasn't convinced. The Director of the preschool is quite young and I tried not let that cloud my judgement of her ability to run the school, however it was what she said when I brought up my daughter's behavior that made me realize this was not going to work... I expressed to her my concerns and that my daughter would say the kids were mean. She said that she had not witnessed any mean treatment but does encourage the kids to tell the teachers if that comes up. She then went on to say that many of the kids there had been enrolled for a while and had become friends and tend to have their little cliques. Cliques at 3 and 4 years old?? No. This did not sit well with me and I was surprised that she not only knew of this behavior among the kids but that it was accepted and no one was trying to encourage these kids to play together and make friends with everyone. I'll say it again, 3 and 4 years old! Needless to say, I pulled my daughter out that day and we didn't return. That is not the kind of community or culture I want my daughter in. We do not do "Mean Girls" at 4 years old and I'm not raising my daughter to dismiss new people, or encourage her to make anyone feel out of place and preschool was the last place I expected her to experience that.

I felt that the teachers truly cared about my daughter and she absolutely thrived in their environment. One example- when my daughter was having a hard time with drop-off, Miss Becca developed a special drop-off routine just for her- and it worked! I felt so good about sending her to school--knowing that everyday, she would be reading, singing, playing outside, and doing art. I was sad to leave TC behind when we moved out of the area, and now that I am looking at new schools for my children, I appreciate even more what a great place TC is. WORTH EVERY PENNY! We went from an A in math at TCS to starting at an F at a public school. Our child was not the only child new to the school, but the only student in class that failed the first two math tests of the school year, because a lot of the material was new. Our student has to work hard to catch up and is saying that while TCS was a nice school, "I am learning much more now", and "I like my new school better". I'm glad we made the change. This review is for those who may be in a similar situation and on the fence. Pros: Nice campus, safe. Mrs. D was the best teacher for us. Cons: Many inexperienced teachers. Limited curriculum in science, math, and history.

Ah, the old stomping grounds. Martone Elementary is nestled deep within suburbia on the outskirts…read moreof western Modesto, but with that comes a quiet, peaceful environment away from the city. The classrooms comfortably seat around 30 students and the school itself uses a year-round track based system (Red, Blue, Yellow, and Green Tracks) that gives children a small vacation after a month of schooling rather than three months of summer vacation after so many months of being cramped in class. For a working family, this sort of schedule is ideal, but it definitely is a change of pace from other schools that offer only the traditional schedule. Some years ago the school attempted to switch to uniforms, but complaints from both the parents and students seem to have forced Martone to return to casual dress. A fence around the perimeter of the school was installed roughly 10 years ago and a few years after that a small public playground was installed outside of the fence for neighborhood children to play in. The school has large fields of grass for playing in, a baseball diamond that is often used for little-league practice, a playground with jungle gym, monkey bars, and parallel bars (though they've removed the sand and replaced it with wood chips for some ungodly reason), and a large blacktop surface for basketball, dodgeball, tether ball, and that one game where you bounce a ball off of a wall whose name escapes me. The cafeteria manages to seat half of the school comfortably (there are two lunch periods) and there is also plenty of tables and areas inside the open-air school for students to picnic off of. The offices are well run and, as a klutzy kid, I can tell you that the nurse's office comes well-equipped to handle any scrapes that your child might get into on any average day of fun during recess. The staff and faculty keep a close eye on the students at all times, and the library is large enough to even keep a little geek like I was entertained all the way from five years old to twelve. I may be biased, but in my opinion I feel that Alberta Martone Elementary School is one of if not the best elementary school in Modesto.
