I've been coming here for a few months now and today i came in for some highlights. I notice a nice customer come in and was having a bank issue and sounded like she needed a letter from them to state she was a previous costumer and that modern salon fixed her hair. The manager Manny handled it very unprofessional and treated her poorly. I don't do business with owners who treat their customers that way. He didn't not want to help her. After the customer left all the staff started speaking Vietnamese. God knows what they were saying about the customer. I will not be coming back to this place and i will spread the word. Hello to all! I have recently moved to the area and of course had the daunting task of finding a new hair salon!! My cousin suggested one right up the road and I went. I was on the phone with Manny a number of times prior to having an appointment- due to the fact that the opening date kept changing due to the Covid crisis.....But the wait was well worth it in my view!! The pleasantries started with an adorable young gal named Thanh (or Tori) who greeted me as soon as I walked in with a glorious smile:-) So sweet and helpful!! Manny the owner came over and we discussed our plan of action so to speak:-) I have to say- they have a unique form of taking care of clients here.....as soon as one does their part- another staff member joins you immediately to execute theirs. I found it quite refreshing actually. Rachel soon joined me to begin highlights....she was fast - super friendly-and extremely knowledgeable about hair and hair products. I was sincerely impressed. Her work was stunning.....Then off to sweet Maria (Saide:-) for a dreamy wash and rinse. As soon as I was back in my chair-along came Manny to do my cut. I found this man to have such a great character and personality and very professional as well. Great cut and conversation!! As soon as he left....yep- Rachel was right there to blow-dry and style my hair. With all that is going on in the world right now- I honestly felt safe being in Modern Salon due to the precautions and social distancing and mandatory masks they obliged by. I accidentally followed the wrong directions to Modern Salon and ended up late and too busy to find time to correct my situation. Manny called the other salon and said he could do my hair after I showed the image to himI had in mind. When I arrived I had not done my homework and figured it was a full service salon. Manny placed a young blonde stylist with me who did not have any understanding of how to take care of customers- It was really weird to have someone singing Christmas Carols while being foiled and no conversation other than I asked her her name and then asked me in return what mine was. Within the first few minutes, it became clear that I was in a slightly upgraded Great Clips on cocaine;workers were trading customers through the mill of color, dry, bowl and cut. I had never seen anything like it and I started trying To look up yelp review from under the dryer. I decided it would be best to hope That the color was not as scary as the other overprocessed women's hair before my eyes. Along with it; there was very loud music playing to keep the nerves on high. I had them dry my hair and when I saw The blonde it had been poorly controlled and blobbed on in several spots because it was so rushed. I told Manny I would Like this corrected with low lights and he obliged. I opted not to get a haircut and two ladies blew dry my hair- again really strange. One hairdresser is the end asked me about my experience. I told her that many women come to get pampered and have a relaxing time getting their hair done. I really did not have a good experience here. One of the girls has terrible customer service (I cannot recall her name), but I had an appointment with Manny and she was the one who did my hair, not Manny. I really just wanted to lighten up my balayage and my hair had a blue-ish tint to it at the end. read more

I wish I could write this review without any star.. worst service ever.....I went for deep conditioning and blonde hair girl, (forgot her name) she took me to shampoo bowl and started shampooing my hair and applied conditioner and left me seated over shampoo bowl.. after 5 mins return to me and started rinsing my hair so I questioned her that if I am going to seat under hair dryer with deep conditioner or not.. she rudely replied, I don't need to seat under dryer because my hair are already soft.. I said, if I only wanted shampoo conditioner I could do it at home.. then she said okay come sit on the hair dryer chair.. I felt like they rushed me out.. only Cindy was friendly and professional, she washed and style my hair... but I am not going back.. read more

Manny is the best. Personable, professional and skilled with color/cuts. I 'transferred' there from another Modern Salon when my usual girl was out on maternity leave. I'm so glad I did. One thing I do agree with other reviewers is the fact that you get passed around. 3/5 times I've been there, Manny did both my color and cut, and I prefer him to blow dry also. I made a last minute appointment for my recent color/cut , and was more understanding that young lady would apply color per Manny's instructions to her. The young lady is sweet, but the constant singing gave me a literal headache. I like talking to my hairdressers, but I found it very off putting. Had I not read other reviews just now, I wouldn't have brought it up. You just have to be specific when making appointments - Manny only, and in my case .....show up on time. I highly recommend the salon, it's small but clean and close to my house. Just request that you only want one person- they'll oblige. It sounds rude, but the place isn't cheap and I want my expectations met. read more

Scheduled an appointment with Manny after reading positive reviews. I didn't have such a good experience. Manny was either overbooked or trying to service too many people at once, and he did not listen to me when I tried to explain what I wanted. When I arrived, Manny was in the middle of a highlight job, and eventually passed that customer off to someone else to complete. I was seated at what I thought was his station and he briefly discussed what I wanted, and then sent me to the back for a shampoo. When the shampoo was over, there was someone else sitting at the station. They had to move me down two seats. Manny was across the room talking to a customer in another chair. Keep in mind that he now had three on my side of the room he was working in addition to what he was doing across the room. Manny finally got to my chair and started cutting. In the end, he gave me a cut that I seems like just a standard beauty school cut that someone else might like, but was TOTALLY OPPOSITE of what I requested. I specifically stated where I wanted length removed, and where I wanted it left to grow out. He cut 2-3 inches off the areas I am trying to grow out (when you have collar length hair, that is a lot of length - he cut off more than half of it). He left long the areas I told him I wanted shorter - particularly my bangs. It's like he had a cut in his mind and just defaulted to autopilot, completely disregarding what I requested. It will take me months to regrow what he cut off. Also, the layering on one side is shorter than the other... I actually pointed it out while he was cutting, and he didn't correct it. I had to come home and cut my bangs myself to get them to the length I wanted (which is what I requested ... I stated it several times). There is nothing I can do about the chop job he did on the rest of it except wait patiently for it to grow out. I won't bore you with the details - just suffice it to say he either has a language/English/communication problem or he was so distracted by all the customers he was servicing at once that he flat out didn't pay attention to what I said or forgot it all by the time he got back to me. Another observation: the entire time I was there I never saw one single style that I thought was particularly attractive. There was a LOT of overprocessed hair in that studio. Before I could even get out of the chair, Manny moved on to the client sitting next to me. Her hair was very long - down to her shoulder blades - and crisp and damaged from past treatments. It was apparent Manny had done the previous job, and was getting ready to add more highlights. He wasn't even discussing with her the need to special condition any of it, or cut off any of the damaged length. I saw this throughout the shop. A lot of treatment damaged hair and quite honestly I didn't see one color treatment that looked very pretty or complimentary to the client. If you are Asian or have that particular type of hair (straight, etc), your chances seem to be better that a cut from this shop will turn out ok. The techniques that give great styles to that type hair are not always good techniques for other types of hair. If you have curly hair, beware because many of the techniques used on straight hair will make yours frizzy. Manny began texturizing my hair and i said I don't like the way texturizing makes my hair look, and he CONTINUED TO TEXTURIZE IT. He honestly doesn't seem to know how to cut hair in different ways - just the techniques that are his routine, which again will probably be ok if you have the kind of hair he is used to cutting. This salon is about 25-30% cheaper than the really good salons. I tried it because I read such good reviews and was interested in saving a little money. The old addage applies - you get what you pay for. I won't be going back. read more

If you click on their names you can see that they have complained about other salon's as well. Some people you cannot make happy no matter what you do. I have been getting my hair cut and colored here for over 1 year. At first it was interesting adjusting to the fact that you do not get one stylist when you come in... one person will color, one will do highlights, one will wash, another will cut and someone will swing by to blow dry... very strange but it's somewhat works for them. The downfall to this place and the reason I will not be returning is that they cannot get my requested color correctly. I have very dark hair and asked for highlights that were not blond and close to a light brown instead... needless to say I ended up with light blond streaks through out my hair twice now (my fault for returning)... When I was coloring my hair one solid brown color, there were no issues. Also, Rachel is the worst... she always has a bad attitude and makes rude remarks to her clientele. Somehow I always end up with her... she's the main reason I will not be returning as I cannot get over her remarks the last time I had my hair colored by her. read more

I went to the same stylist for 15 years then sadly we lost touch due to differences between us. He was in my opinion probably the best stylist in Houston especially for the kind of cut I have. For 10 of those 15 years my hair was cut in a stacked bob, and everywhere I went got so many compliments. You can understand my frustration when it comes to having to find a new hair dresser after going to the same person for so many years. After trying to let it grow out I decided short is just looks best on me but was afraid nobody would be able to cut it the same. I decided to go to Modern Salon after hearing many good things about them. They take walk ins also which was perfect for me that particular day. I had gone from my natural color which is dark brown to blonde to fire engine red all within 8 months. I wanted to go back dark but with a slight eggplant highlight, so Rachel gave me a great consultation explaining what I needed to do because I'm more of a low maintenance type of girl. She was fast, friendly and gave me exactly what I was wanting! It appears that the owner Manny does most of the cuts and is all over the place, but he definitely spends the time needed to ensure you leave happy and with the cut u came in for. I'm very pleased with the service I received especially being that it was such short notice. Manny did an excellent job getting my hair back to the short bob I had previously, and I'll definitely be going back! The only reason I did not give 5 stars is because I do prefer one stylist to do everything, but the price was reasonable and I left a happy camper! No complaints here! read more
