Over the many months that it took for ME to get through all the logistics of receiving the piano ownership through an estate gift, Misty and team were very patient, and continually kept me apprised of their current ability to handle the move. I also elected to purchase additional insurance beyond their base for my piano, since I had some challenge identifying what the appropriate value was - and just wanted to be well covered in case of an issue. When the move finally came, the weather at the pickup location presented a challenge - and it was no problem to just delay our pickup by about 3 weeks, at which time the winter conditions, while still of slight concern, did not appear to give the team any problems! Piano moved from difficult mountain location, south side of Mount St. Helens, to old house with lots of front steps in Spokane WA. The piano and all parts were wrapped and double wrapped and taped. Everything arrived in undamaged condition, and the workmen were efficient, skilled, and professional. It was not an easy move, and they handled it beautifully. They even knew where to add an unusual screw with a special tool for that screw only. I was so impressed with how nicely everyone at Modern treated me over the phone, especially Margie. They're precisely mediocre. You help them establish an estimate upfront, which you are charged for when they pick up the piano. They picked up the piano early from the person I was buying it from, but did not notify me of this. (Very suprising and frustrating) You wait some time (in my case, a few weeks) They tell you they'll contact you a few days in advance of the delivery to confirm, but in my case, they did not, and I had to call them. Then, when the delivery happened, they decided to use the back entrance to my basement, and skipped the "steps & turns" which I had already been billed and charged for. They're a slow, expensive, but decent delivery service. I think they handled the piano well, which is the most crucial concern, but the other elements were really neither here nor there. Slow but decent, and charged more than what the ended up having to do for delivery. I would recommend using them, but keep these elements in mind. read more

The owner is named "Russ Vitt". His workers have no idea what they are doing. Judging from the cheap and ridiculous tools they use, they are no professional movers, let alone professional movers of pianos. The piano arrived beaten up---the keyboard cover was missing, part of one leg was broken, and ugly cuts are found all over. Russ Vitt tried very hard not to answer any questions about the insurance policy we have paid for him to buy. I do not think he actually bought it at this point. Please keep in mind that Russ Vitt takes advantage of the situation that his clients cannot sue him because he is in another state. I wish life should treat Russ Vitt the same way he has treated my piano. I wish Russ Vitt be surrounded by beings of the same integrity as his. read more

My husband asked me to wait to write this review until after I had eaten, which seemed reasonable. So since the nachos are now down the hatch and my thinking a bit more measured, here we go. Here are the facts: (1) Modern Piano seems to be one of two serious interstate piano movers in the U.S., and from the research I did, it's the nicer of the two. (2) They delivered my piano -the piano itself- without injury 4 months after they picked it up rather than the 2 months advertised. (3) Upon arrival, the piano bench was broken. (4) They did pay a handyman in my area to fix the bench, which took quite a bit of cajoling on my part. That guy did a great job. (5) I was offered a very, very small discount which did very little to change my opinion of the company - hence the review. Here's some of the details: They picked up my late grandparents' piano - the piano I grew up with - in early July and said it had to go to their storage facility in Barstow, CA until the next truck north went by. No problem; seems very reasonable. Except there was a problem: They labeled this very sentimental heirloom as "long-term storage" rather than ready for the next truck. I called about a month after pick up, and was told the piano would be delivered a specific week in August. As that week approached, I called again to get a more specific day, which was when the office staffer assigned suddenly seemed confused as to the current location of my piano (...terrifying, and I had more than a few tears later thinking about the new possibility of the company delivering my piano to another house or somehow losing it otherwise). Eventually she realized the error and stated the piano did not get on the northbound truck and therefore would not be delivered by the 60th day as promised due to it being mislabled as being in Barstow for long-term storage. She described it as the "biggest mistake I've ever seen during my career here". Wow! Since we were out of town during the tiny window of time the next truck would have dropped the piano off, we were stuck waiting yet another month for the piano, and it was delivered at the end of October. I was given a less than .05% discount as a result. I actually thought they made another mistake in calculating the discount, but turns out that they weren't mistaken there. I told the rep that that amount of discount really wasn't significant enough to change my opinion about the company. She agreed to go to her supervisor with the request to increase the discount, and I called back every few weeks during those last two months to make sure (1) they knew where the piano was and (2) to check in to see if the boss ever got out of that meeting or back from that vacation, etc. S/he apparently did not. In the meantime, the piano was finally delivered with the piano bench broken. The bench isn't replaceable -the handyman checked since he wasn't sure Modern Piano would pay for the repair since it was a bit complicated. It took quite a few phone calls / emails to find out if / how the bench would be fixed. More tears commenced as I wondered if I would lose the bench. Losing my grandfather earlier this year was devastating. Having his piano in my home is significant to me in so many ways. When I think about my experience with Modern Piano getting the piano here, though, I still feel quite a bit of anxiety and sadness. The frustration has passed. I know this for sure - it's a good thing this experience happened with me and not with my grandmother. She would have hit high C above high C on the phone with them, which may have changed their mind about the discount amount. She had perfect pitch. read more

We used Modern Piano to move my dad's old 1976 Everett Upright from Colorado to Texas. The initial communication up front was a bit spotty and there were several back and forth emails. Once I called, everything went smoothly after that. The piano was picked up and delivered within the timeframe quoted and in great condition (18 days from pick up to delivery). This is the first cross-country move I have done, so I can't compare it to any other company. MP did come in the cheapest out of all the quotes I received. The driver in this case either totally missed the many LARGE signs warning/prohibiting tractor trailers on this steep winding mountain road or decided to disregard them. Well, he got stuck and had to be guided by backing up by state police. "It happened around 10 a.m. Authorities say Braden Pitchford, 26, ignored and passed several clearly posted signs warning against trucks and busses using the road. After getting stuck, troopers were able to guide him back towards the Stowe side. He was issued a $1,192 ticket and two points on his license." read more

I sold a Yamaha Clavinova online and used Modern PIano Moving for pickup and delivery. First off, I know nothing about piano moving logistics, but Modern provided the best price versus two other quotes I received, by 50%. If you are in a hurry however, you have to weigh price versus expediency. My time line: Order placed: September 11 Pick up: October 10 Delivery: November 18 This was explained to me, but understand this was a two month process. Modern works by picking up your piano on a route, then going to a location, off loading and delivering on another route. No problem for me, thank goodness my buyer was patient. Only gliche, after it was (expertly) packed and hauled away, I notice a cord on the floor. I called the truck driver and said I think you missed packing this. Rather than turn around and pick it up, he decided to keep going. He said they think they packed everything. Well I decided to send the cord to the buyer anyway. Which turned out to be the right call, the cord was the power to the piano. I sent an email to Modern, but no response (yet). When you pay almost $1000 for a service I think you deserve to have your expectations met. It shouldn't fall on me to make ensure my buyer is pleased with his purchase. Pickup of our piano was standard. 2 guys that looked like they could handle the job assessed the piano, wrapped it and the bench quite convincingly, and left without issues. Drop off was also scheduled for a reasonable time - 2 weeks after pick up for a move from NJ to NY. But as the truck pulled up to deliver, my parents - who received the piano - called me to confirm "there's kids doing the delivery?" I assumed they meant college or maybe strong high school kids and said not to judge them. My dad took this literally and tried not to judge as the poor boy (high school at best?) struggled to get the piano above our one step outside, failed, and caused the bottom corner of the poorly covered piano (the original covering at pickup was gone and instead replaced with a loose covering NOT wrapping the bottom of the piano) to strike the concrete. He then tried not to judge again as the family then struggled to take the dolly out from the piano (the little girl was in charge of taking the dolly out as the one grown man and his presumed son held the piano), couldnt coordinate and had the dolly only halfway out and again the piano bottom corner hit the floor. Finally, my parents tipped the family despite the poor job because they felt bad that these young kids were trying to move a piano. It gets worse. Trying to assess the damage caused by the two drops we turned the piano around...and the back revealed fresh wood chips and dents. Wow! Where did that come from?? When I called the deliverer for some explanations he said the piano was covered so the bumps didnt matter (perhaps, if it was properly covered but not when the loose covering doesnt protect the bottom) and as for the back -- "I dont know, I didnt look at the back." Of course, what did I even expect. At this point I just hope this will only be cosmetic damages and not affect the performance. We'll find out. If you're looking to pay over a thousand dollars for movers that can't move and have your piano rough handled...start here. Modern Piano moved the piano fine, but they messed up their scheduling so much that they had to come pick my piano up AFTER I HAD ALREADY MOVED OUT. I booked them about a month in advance of moving, and we had a date set up. Two weeks before, I called them to confirm, and they told me they were coming to pick the piano up two days after my move-out date. I told them under no uncertain terms that they had to come before I left the apartment for good. They said they'd figure out a way to do it, no worries, etc, etc. A week before, I called to confirm, and THEY STILL HAD THE WRONG DATE to come pick up the piano. I had to work out a deal with my landlord, I had to pay an extra two days in rent, and I had to have a friend come stay at my apartment while their movers came and got my piano. Not to mention the fact that I had to leave my expensive instrument in a vacant apartment where I knew painters and cleaners were going to do their thing after we left. Not a great experience. To be fair, they gave me a bit of a discount (because I demanded it), and the piano was not harmed at all in transit. But I did everything I was supposed to do and was incredibly inconvenienced. I will not recommend them; I will never use them again. read more

I have a Yamaha baby grand piano that I needed to move from Georgia to Pittsburgh, PA. My tuner in Georgia recommended this mover. I checked out their web page and called them on a Saturday for an estimate. I got a good impression so decided to go ahead and schedule the job. I found it's important to schedule a piano move as soon as possible. They have delivery and pick up windows about 30'days apart so if you miss one window you need to wait another 30 days. I Just missed a September pick up window so needed to wait about 30 days for an October pickup. The two guys who picked up the piano were very professional and friendly and wrapped everything very carefully. The delivery took a little longer than promised--38 days from pickup. I was impressed in particular with the service I got with delivery. My new house in Pittsburgh is in a steep slope and can only be accessed by climbing 17 stairs. I made this clear when I scheduled the job and they said they would send an extra guy. When they delivered they only had two guys. They looked at Google Street View, which led hem to believe the stairs wouldn't be too bad. However, when they came, they saw it would be a difficult job. What impressed me was they tried different methods, including attempting to drive their ATV up the stairs. Finally they decided they needed two additional guys and called some local movers who came in about 45 minutes or so. These four guys were able to safely move the piano up my steep stairs. I appreciate the fact that they didn't give up and try to reschedule. They also used four guys instead of the three originally planned and there was no add on charge. On top of this, it was cold and rainy when they did the delivery, but that didn't stop them. At both the pickup and delivery Modern Piano trucks (a huge 75 footer) and Modern Piano employers were used. I liked the fact that contractors were not used (except for the additional help). The piano was delivered in perfect condition with no damage, and it's not even too much out of tune. I would highly recommend this firm if you have a piano you care about that you need to move. read more

I submitted pictures of the condition the day of pick up and pictures of the damage on arrival and they denied my claim, unwilling to reimburse for repairs. The wood was cracked on the key cover and the cheek block was chipped. If you prefer your piano to arrive in the same state as it left, go with someone else. read more

It is a great instrument, and stays very stable in tuning. And one of the ways I know how well they have taken care of it is how well it has stayed in tune when they deliver it. It's very simple really, there is no better. If anyone has read any other review I have written you will know that I am brutally honest. So, if I say they're the best then they are. My piano is in great shape. Has practically no scratch on it despite the fact that it has been moved a couple dozen times since it was used for competitions and recitals before it was offered for sale in New York City. I moved it from there three times before it came to Minnesota. The Modern Piano Moving crew came to my house in Minnesota, carefully turned this grand piano on its side to take the legs off. They wouldn't come off. The guy in charge got a nylon hammer and gently tapped it, never making the smallest dent. They needed to come off for the move and the storage. After about 10 minutes it gave way and came off. Then the same story with another leg. What is happening here? Well, the mystery was quickly solved. The previous movers didn't put them on directly. Even though these were a large company professional movers who said they had moved a lot of pianos, they did it wrong anyway, and made the scratch which they said had been there before which wasn't true but I didn't take pictures. Should have. After the legs were off and the piano was wrapped in about a dozen blankets they had to take it up a soft grassy hill, which they did without making a dent in the lawn. Then to the truck, into the truck and on their way they were. They kept it in storage for the very acceptable price of $80.00 monthly (may be more if you have a bigger one, this one is just under 7 ft), in a climate controlled warehouse. Then it came to Arizona, in top shape. They were on time, quickly put it together, they had marked the legs so they knew which one goes where. Then they spent about 20 minutes moving it back and forth a bit here then there until I was completely satisfied and they put the casters under the wheels. And then I changed my mind, no problem, we'll do that happily. Another 6 inches clockwise and we were happy. All they asked us to do is to put the ball of tape in the garbage. No problem, we're in the middle of a move anyway, lots of garbage to go around. So, in summary, as I said above, it's very simple. There is no better. read more

The service on the phone was great and the piano was picked up and delivered very carefully; the delivery and pickup people were great. The one downside to this company is the lack of flexibility in times, especially on the drop off side. While I understand that they can only drop off on their next big trip to the area, there was zero flexibility in determining a date or even a window. I was told to accept the date and window and if I didn't, they would have to put my piano in storage and charge me for the storage. I normally do not write reviews, but I thought it might help others when they are trying to decide who to hire when they need a piano mover. After getting quotes from 3 different companies, I hired Modern Piano to move our grand piano from Florida to Utah in May of 2020, even though they were the most expensive, based on a recommendation from our piano tuner. After doing some research and reading some reviews online about them, I decided to hire them. Here is what they did wrong: - The piano was not delivered in a climate controlled vehicle as promised, but in a U-Haul. - The piano was unloaded and reloaded on multiple vehicles before it was delivered, again contrary to what was promised. - The pedal assembly was missing because they mistakenly unloaded it in Texas. - They took another two weeks to deliver the pedal assembly. - When asked if they would install the pedal assembly, they told us to get a piano tuner to do it. - The screws to attach the pedal assembly were not with it. They were finally found in the piano bench. - They did not keep me informed about the delivery status of the pedal assembly but had to be contacted about it. - A partial refund was not offered. - No one ever responded to my complaints. Summary of my experience: - Their customer service is very poor. - They don't deliver on their promises. - They don't take responsibility for their mistakes. read more

I have moved my antique baby grand piano 3 times with Modern Piano. I have been extremely satisfied with each move, but this most recent move was fantastic. The movers called to let me know they made it to the area earlier than expected. I was excited to see my piano, but a little reluctant to have them deliver it at that moment, because my very difficult 2-year-old had JUST gone down for a nap. I met them outside and informed them I had a sleeping child near the piano delivery location, and they were extremely understanding.
