If you have naturally thick, curly and a lot of hair like me. And you don't want to straighten your hair. Please try Toni. He knows how to trim your hair with scissor, not thinning hair scissor. :) read more

Second haircut by Amy and I will tell you that for $15 this typically $40/haircut LA girl could not be more happy!! YES. $15!! For long hair! Count it! The details: I don't speak a lick of Chinese, but I've had no problems communicating with Amy. Both times (as suggested) I did bring in a photo. Amy does speak fairly good English though and we even enjoyed a smattering of small talk this last time. What impresses me is how much attention to detail Amy shows when cutting my hair. Though she is quick, it seems like she is very careful/thorough. And most importantly, both times I have loved the end result! I always fear coming out with a mullet or fob-cut from these Asian places, but I've loved the clean, layered look I've gotten both times. read more

I just moved to the neighborhood and was looking for a nail salon to drop into, for a gel mani. I was a little surprised about how small the shop is as well as the fact that they don't do anything besides gel and regular polish (no acrylic, no hard gel). Ultimately the ladies did an awesome job and took their time, and and my nails came out perfectly! read more

Haircut OK, Color BAD BAD BAD. I've gotten a hair cut by both Amy & Tony & they are both very good at cuts. I usually get a trim plus some layers & I've never really been disappointed on the haircut end. I have really long hair & my total came out to $17. VERY reasonable for the area! However, I naively assumed that since they were good at haircuts, that they would be good at color. NOPE, I was wrong. I went to Tony for a full color. I pointed out the color I wanted from the color book - a dark ash blonde. What I got was a reddish ugly brown that resembled nothing of the color I pointed out. Moreover, he missed spots throughout my hair, including one very obvious spot in the front. He did a terrible job getting the roots, and he didn't care to fix it or even mention that he made a mistake. I had to go to another salon just to fix the damage done here. The other salon even said that it was not a professional coloring that was done to my hair & I agreed. I ended up spending more than three times the amount I wanted to spend just to fix my hair because I didn't even want Tony touching my hair again. I was a fan, but after that terrible, unprofessional, disgusting job, I will not be returning. It just goes to show they put no care into their work. read more

I'm going to make this quick as possible since I'm super excited with how my hair looks right now. It's pretty impossible to get a same day appointment in this city! I called so many places and read good reviews about this place and gave it a shot. I got in, Tom was busy ,but he could fit me in for a quick haircut. You see, I've been pretty spoiled with getting my hair done. My brother's gf does my hair when I'm down south for almost nothing and also, one of my best friend's mother does my hair, for like free. I moved to SF about 6 months ago and have no way of getting to them and I can NOT justify getting my hair and bangs trimmed for $50 +. I have LONG stick straight hair, easiest hair to do. This place was AWESOME. Tom knows exactly what he's doing and did not mess around. Most trims on my hair you can't even tell the difference but this time, you can. My hair is STILL long but fullllll of body. My bangs are amazing and are actually cooperating with me. It's usually the hard part about my hair 'cause straight hair +bangs= a cowlick that came out of nowhere! Super thank you and I will more than likely be back for my next trim =D PS. Awesome pricing which means....I gave a large tip. ;) read more

My boyfriend's mom recommended this place to me to try my next cut and color. Being that her hair didn't look like a total disaster, I decided to give them a try. I made an appointment for Saturday afternoon with Amy and came prepared with a picture of what I was looking for. I'm glad that I brought a pic because there was a *slight* language issue (I knew I should have paid more attention in my conversational Mandarin class in community college!). We were able to stumble through with the help of sign language and my picture, what I wanted and, with the help of the "big book of hair color swatches" I was able to pick the highlight colors of choice. Amy was did an excellent job! She also gave me a totally awesome scalp massage while shampooing my hair. The cut and color were great and when I got the final bill - I was sold!! $76 for a shampoo, cut, highlight and style. Thank you Amy! The shop offers manicures and pedicures in addition to their hair services. It's a pretty big shop with lots of nice natural lighting. They could use a bit of cosmetic help to make the place look more modern, but then I'm sure that's why the prices are so awesome. read more

I got a great $16 haircut from Amy and have never been happier. I've always had bad experiences with hairdressers who manage to make my hair so thin or literally never listen to what I want. Amy actually LISTENS to what you want and will turn your hair into a miracle. Also, I thought she was just spraying water in my hair, but I think it was some kind of serum that made my hair soft and smell so good. I will be returning back to her place for my next haircut! After 19 years, I think I finally found my official haircutter :) read more

1. Come prepared with a photo. 2. It's $18 for a shampoo & hair cut. 3. Come prepared with a photo. Amy cut my hair and I think she did a great job. I was specific with what I wanted and she gave me exactly what I asked for. Hurrah for cheap & decent hair cuts. Again, if your Chinese is rusty or non-existent, bring a photo for reference. read more

OK, I hate hairdressers. I don't like getting fussed over, I like being in and out and the worst haircuts and colours of my life have been in the salons where I've been charged upwards of $150 for the privilege. I figure I can walk out of a salon despairing over my hackjob haircut and colour I just paid a lot of money for (& then have to come in and get it fixed and sit in the chair AGAIN and it's always awkward, ugh). OR... I can pay the least amount possible, just get my layers maintained and you know... maybe I'll still hate it, but at least I didn't pay a lot. (note: my ex's mother was a hairdresser and she showed me how to dye my own hair really well, so i don't even pay for that anymore, except for the dye! and it looks EXACTLY the way i want it to... and very natural and soft) Having said all that, I'd had my only really bad cheapie experience at a salon down the road back in June, so this time I hopped onto yelp to see who had the good reviews and I picked this place. Amy cut my hair. She's really nice and really listened (she speaks English) and did a great job. I asked for what I always do -- layers all over, framing the face, please keep the length. I was in and out in about 30 minutes. All up - $16!!! Yay!!! I tipped Amy $10, she deserved it. read more

This place is great!!!! I'm usually really picky about my hair, but one year ago, i had a moment when i suddenly wanted to get a wave now...and i mean NOW. Looking at my wallet, I only had $55, so i drove to Irving, look around for a decent looking place for a cheap perm and stumbled across Modern Design. At first, I was nervous...perm is PERMANENT....and I didn't know how good or bad the place was, but since i was in the moment, i went for it. The result was AMAZING!!! for only $50, It's as good as the salon i went to in LA that charged me $300 for perm. Ever since then, I come back for AMY for anything that have to do with my hair. I cannot trust anyone else with my hair. It is a bit hard to communicate with her since her English is so-so, but she always tries her best to make small talk and she usually remembers what we talk about from last visit and follows up. Cheap, friendly, and does a good job...what else would you ask for? read more

So... I got my haircut today for CNY... and I have this dread of impending doom. It's hard for me to comprehend: $21 (prior to tip) for a cut AND wash???................. Walking out of there, I was quite pleased. I had a simple request: -trim, -redefine my long layers, -and emphasize my long style bangs. I've been waiting to go to NY to have my stylist there give me a cut but he bounces between NY, Tokyo, and London... needless to say, I was not able to catch him this month for CNY. I would have waited too but I opted to uphold the lucky tradition of cutting one's hair prior to CNY for luck. I haven't washed my hair yet, I plan to... will it still look nice after?? If for worse, I'll re-rate! ...$21..... and I left satisfied as opposed to horrified.... Very thankfully, but nonetheless-- weird.... Love it! What a deal! Thanks Amy. Also, a comment on the hair washing: I LOVE it when they scratch and massage my scalp. Initially, she did not, during the wash. But on the occasions she did, with my eyes closed, I'd emphasize the widest, teethless grin, that I hoped would have said: 'Yes. Please do that. I like it. I like very much.' I guess I could have asked but it's impolite in the Asian culture (and she is Asian) to ask an elder to do things. And so, every time my scalp was scratched, one can tell by looking at my face, #superpleased!purrrr. It was so good, I didn't even care if others walked by with a judging glare thinking: #weirdo. It was a great system, I think she caught my drift because I got lots of scratching and massaging during the latter half of my wash ^___^ Minor hiccups: Some water got in my shirt, and on my face during the wash. It was lovely. Thank God it wasn't shampoo, that would have stung. During the cut, her grasp seldom missed my hair and got my face. #(small)ow. Least it wasn't the blades! Regardless, #thumbsup ;] UPDATES & Additions 01.22.2012 When you walk by, you might consider busting out your smartphone to Yelp again-- it's not chic, posh, nor fancy. It's plain with white interiors... and you might second guess coming here. I'm glad I didn't succumb to those second thoughts! Washed my hair, looks great! The way she redefined my layers actually gave me MORE volume! And I didn't even have to ask for it... love that :] read more

I had a hair dilemma! I've been coloring my hair on my own for about 4 years now but this time I got a color a tad too dark for my liking. I'm a medium brown kinda girl, even tho my natural hair color is black. I actually used to get my hair colored by Amy at Modern Design Salon but as time went on, I figured I could color my hair by myself and it wouldn't be anything fancy and it'd be cheaper so I stopped going. Well, after the dilemma, I didn't wanna damage my hair even more by mixing colors and all that so I had to seek out Amy and her skills again. I called for an apt and I got one the next morning. I arrived at 10:30am and waited about 15mins for Amy. She got right to it! Everything went great. I even enjoyed the massages she gives while she's washing your hair. (Almost made me feel like going there once a week, just for that)! The whole process took about 2hrs, which wasn't too bad. She even helped me feed the meter (since it is Irving and its hard to find no-meter parking). Price for color and hair cut: $58 + tip. Overall, the experience was great! *thumbs up* read more

The awkward moment when you walk in a new hair salon to get a haircut from someone new... yes, that dying feeling! Tony was the one who cut my hair. I wear glasses so, the moment I took off, I got super nervous! As he cut my hair.. I just did not know how to react it. Overall, I actually like my haircut. But, I just don't like the awkward vibe when I walked in and when I was seated. read more

The first time I came here, I tried to get an appointment with Tony because of the reviews, but he wasn't working so Amy cut my hair. I was a little uneasy about her because she wet my hair, then put a lollipop in her mouth... But my hair was great! She cut it exactly how I wanted, although I had to wait a few days to be completely satisfied with my straight bangs. My hair grew out perfectly and it's totally worth the price. read more

Whenever I am in San Francisco and have enough time for a manicure pedicure, this is THE place I go to. It is no-nonsense and the prices are incredible for what you get. The manicurists are super fast and does a really great job. They also have a hair salon attached as well as an aesthetician available for facials and peels etc. You have to make an appointment though for those services. Manicures and pedicures can be on a walk-in basis as long as you're early. Weekends, you can forget about. Parking sucks though on Irving Street but if you are able to get a metered spot within a block, the manicurists are happy to go feed your meter for you. read more

[compliment] great price for a styled haircut!!! [when] tuesday, august 4th, 2009 @ 10:30AM [hairdresser] tony [pros] -he shampooed my hair twice, gave me a scalp massage & conditioned my long hair. -i showed him a magazine clip of the hair style i wanted & he just simply nodded and said okay. -he was super focused for 30-45 minutes -he knows what he was doing. *i have not met a hair stylist who knows how to cut "BANGS" especially side-swept...BUT...he did it better than i the magazine cut-out that i showed him. [cons] -the only thing i want to write is that he forgot he had an appointment and made me wait 15-20 minutes. -it happens to all of us. :D [Total Cost] $20 for shampoo, haircut & blow dry *do not forget to tip ^_^* [overall comments] my hair is light, shiny, healthy & styled!!! kudos to tony!!! read more

I always come here to find Amy. (: I've been going to her for so long, I barely let anyone else touch my hair. True story. She's not the fastest when she cuts your hair, but she's very precise and everything. It doesn't matter as long as I come out of the saloon with a satisfied haircut or coloring, right? lol. Always up for making sure your desired hairstyle suits your face and everything~ She did my hair for my senior prom a couple of years ago and it was probably the prettiest (ah, so corny) I felt in a very long time.. ^_^ I don't know why I haven't reviewed this place sooner. Hahaha. The whole staff is pretty friendly. Generally very nice. (: read more

I used to come here regularly to get my hair done. I had a few different people do my hair, but I eventually kept going back to Amy. She's given me a color job once, and trimmed my hair before my wedding. She does exactly what I ask for, and that's what I really want from a stylist. And the price that she charges is a steal. It's harder for me to get there now because I live in the South Bay. I'm severely overdue for a cut, and since I've yet to find an equivalent stylist in this area (in skills and price), I'll just have to get myself back to Amy. Soon. read more

Been seeing Tony for 20 years, does a great job! Now he sees my kids, adult and kid friendly.

Completely under-rated. Initially I was a little hesitant since the price was so reasonable and I had a tough time understanding Amy over the phone but all my worries were set aside the moment we started discussing my options. Finally a stylist that listens to what I want, the end results were fabulous. My only regret was not having her cut more! I will definitely be back every two weeks to get my trim. read more

I was recommended by a friend and I needed my nails done for my wedding. I wanted something simple and classy and that was what I got. Janet did my nails and I love the cute little bow she added for me. The price was reasonable considering how much time and rhinestone that was put on my nails. Janet was very professional and talkative. I had acrylic done with a French polish. Also she charge me $10 to remove them :) Really enjoyed my visit here and will come again ! Thank you read more

I called in to make an appointment today and was notified that Amy retired just last week!!! Where do I go now?!

I made an appointment the previous day and when I went in the next day, they were so confused and I said I made an appointment and then they were like "oh okay..." How do you forget customers appointment? Second of all, I wanted to cut my hair short. My hair was very long and I asked for something shorter. They cut way more than I asked first of all. Second of all, they can't even cut properly! They just did a couple snip and off came half of my hair. On top of that, my hair isn't even!! It's all choppy and honestly even my friend who doesn't cut hair can cut better. read more

Monica has cut my hair two times now, and I'm officially done going to overpriced salons. She takes her time on my thin, limp hair and manages to make it look good. Not only that, but both haircuts have grown out nicely. Additionally, at her prices, I have no guilt about getting my haircut every 6 weeks! read more

Loved my manicure! She did a better job than most other nail salons I've been to and at a better price!
