The vet herself was equally wonderful, spending plenty of time explaining what was happening on a first puppy visit, what to expect, what to do next and warning me about issues that might come up which to a new pet owner like me was wonderfully welcome. My review is for this location only, I usually go to the studio city location. I came here for a check up on my dog, they had to do a blood and urine test, the technician named "Ashley" took her blood sample from her leg, I already felt weird from the start, they have some type of clothing pad where they lay the dogs, the piece of clothing kept moving, I was worried my dog was gonna be hurt, they had to take a blood sample with a needle and that clothing pad keeps making my dog slide and not stay in place. At one point I even want to say should I hold it? Because I was worried my dog was gonna be hurt. She poked on her leg first and the blood was not coming, I don't remember if she poked the same leg twice but then she tried using the other leg. Before she decided to use the other leg, the little container where she blood comes fell from her hands and the clothing mat kept sliding out of place, watching all of this was giving me major anxiety. She then decided to use the other leg, the blood finally came out she said "she's so small is hard to see her veins" ... When she took her urine sample, same thing happened, she was about to poke my dog and suddenly said "wait this needle is too big let me change it" then she poked my dogs urethra with the syringe and no pee was coming thru the needle, her words were "your dogs is too tense, her urethra keeps moving" . At this point I was getting upset because they did this same procedure at the studio city location and it was done fast. She poked my dog with the needle again, the pee was not coming out and I could see she was moving around the needle -___- it must've hurt my dog, I was furious because I felt she was not experienced. I will not be coming back to this location. Specially after everything was done she said "sometimes is hard to get blood samples from older dogs and your dog is too small and tense" A simple sorry would've sufficed but she was blaming my dog for being small or old??? My dog had this same procedure done at the studio city location in seconds and they did a great job! I don't know but this lady gave me a feeling she was inexperienced. I also felt like they were pushing me to do all this expensive test (ultra sounds) that came out to more than $1,000, when the only problem my dog had was a UTI, I ended spending around $700 because they told me to do a test that was like $320 on top of the inicial $200 for the blood and urine sample. The test was to see which type of bacteria or UTI she had, it's just crazy that they ended prescribing the same medicine she already took at the ER, I don't know I just felt weird that I paid $700 just to be prescribed the same medicine, I felt they could've prescribed that medicine without pushing me to do the $320 test. They do this in most veterinary offices, they always try to push expensive test. Disappointed, I felt this location does it too. I'll stick to the studio city one, I felt the environment is totally different. read more

I'm updating my review because the CEO of this company called tonight to thoughtfully address what happened with our pup today. He didn't disagree that trying to draw blood for two hours on our pup created a lot of fear in a "fear free" environment. We will not know next steps until tomorrow and we may not stay with Modern Animal if they can't draw blood on our dog without sedating her, but his time and kindness mattered a lot. Customer service around fur babies, agree or disagree, should look like this! Original review- Paid the membership fee to bring one of our dogs here because despite being treated for C Diff, she has consistent diarrhea and/or loose stool (very unusual for her). Met with tech and vet and went over next steps. Needed to do blood work, urine, feces, etc. No problem. You'd think! This facility could not figure out how to draw blood on my 43 pound non aggressive but super squirmy deaf dog. THIS has NEVER been an issue. She gave blood elsewhere two weeks ago with NO issue. During the process of trying to get her blood, my pup scratched my arm pretty bad. I had to ask for something to wipe the blood and wasn't even given a bandaid (I left actively bleeding). The solution, give her Trazadone and bring her back tomorrow. I made it CLEAR that my dog gets hyped up on Trazadone. But the vet apparently told the tech it has to be Trazadone. The whole INEPT visit had me so anxious that I just paid (for services not yet done) and left. I'm not giving her the damn Trazadone and cannot believe I tolerated a vet that can't get blood from a dog. The app is trying to find someone to contact me, but they have limited staff. I'm honestly FURIOUS and the vet never even came back in the room (we were there for hours). It may look nice, but skills and competency matters! read more

They even sent me a message to let me know the doctor I was seeing changed. You can video chat, text, and call, and they are available 24/7 as part of the membership. No office visit fee, unlimited at no cost. Got to the office for my appointment and was offered a drink (non alcoholic) and Scott at the front desk was super sweet and friendly. Didn't have to wait past my appointment time (super rare). Staff - Everyone I interacted with exceeded my expectations. Friendly, caring, and great with my little girl, and prices were very comparable to what I was paying before. Service was great, I felt they listened and didn't push me to do anything that wasn't needed. Overall, Modern Animal is now my new vet for all my pets. Highly recommend this place. Check them out ! Let me start b y complementing the staff at the Pasadena Location. They are all attentive and really amazing. My problem is with the system that they have. When we signed up for our dog, we were under the impression that by paying a monthly fee, not only we would have excellent care, but also accesss to reasonable priced vaccines and medications for the pup. I was shocked to find out that the average mark up on vaccines is over 1700%. a complete vaccine panel that costs 14 dollars online, I was charged 190 dollars. A ear wash solution that costs 11 dollars online, I was charged 35 dollars. I am all for people making money and what not, but the mark upon are outrageous. typical tech bro greed. Update: They call me and to tell me that they will be revising their pricing. read more

After having some serious issues with the vet I had been using for years, I searched and found Modern Animal. I have taken three of my animals there so far and they are really great. I was greeted as soon as I walked in and even was offered water! The BIG thing-I can go in and actually be with my pet while they are being examined. No waiting in a hot car. The vets are kind and listen. When the vet sat on the floor and pet my cat, I was pretty stunned! So sweet! The care is very good and thorough, they worked hard to make sure my animals were comfortable. The facility is very clean and modern. I love the app. Having all my pet's data at my fingertips has been really convenient. PELASE READ! THEY MADE MY DOG DEAF! I just want to make everyone AWARE!! Long story short, my Frenchie has a very mild ear infection for a month now in her left ear, first we went to a vet, they prescribed some homeopathic ear solution which didn't help. I decided to take her to MODERN ANIMAL PASADENA on this past Sunday, and the vet there prescribed a medication which caused my baby to go TOTALLY DEAF WITHIN 4days of prescription. Medicine called MOMETAMAX. Also he told us to squeeze a generous amount in both of her ears twice a day. I thought she only had it in one ear and all of a sudden now both ears has an infection. Also this vet said since Moki lost weight, he thinks she has cancer or a tumor. I freaked out and made an appointment at MASH to get every test done possible (blood fecal ultrasound etc) Next day we went to Mash and they said MoMo doesn't have cancer or tumor. Around Wednesday she started to not greet us by the door and didn't really listen, but I thought it's just her regular Frenchie behavior. (Not listening ). next day I realized that she won't hear us getting up from bed, she was just sleeping in for a long time. I thought she must feel sick or something. By the afternoon on Thursday I realized that she completely lost her hearing, won't react to any noise and she would be confused and scared. I immediately called every specialist within 50 miles radius (Los Angeles area) and no one was able to see us. So I took her to the ER and asked the vet to check on her. He didn't even charge us anything because he felt sorry for us to not be able to help. He said MoMo is completely deaf and she needs to see a specialist ASAP! Of course I stopped the medication right there and then. My husband was calling everyone existing to make an appointment. Next morning a place called us back , they are ear specialists, and we were in at 10:30am (Friday) , after examining MoMo, the vet said she needs to flush her ears immediately and check for damages under anesthesia. Some dogs never get their hearing back caused by this medication so we have to act quickly. They don't even carry this med because it has a history of making dogs deaf. After the procedure we pick MoMo up and been extremely disappointed in the Modern Animal's vet, $5000 later my dog is deaf. At least he could of made me aware of the possible side effect which is not rare, also to prescribe the righ dosage for the dog. On the label what he put, it says squeeze a generous amount to both ears for twice daily. He even told me to squeeze it for like 3-4 seconds to each ear. Like what kind of measurement is this? Why I didn't google the medication after he prescribed it, why I didn't question his opinion on MoMo having cancer, why I didn't catch this sooner. The ear specialist said we could pray for MoMo's recovery but it's not guaranteed at all, even online it says 80% dogs recovered, there is absolutely no evidence or study on that. Right now she is extremely confused, sad, depressed. ALL THIS BECAUSE OF ONE MEDICATION FOR A MILD EAR INFECTION I could never forgive for myself. She is our everything, my daughter, my best friend. PLEASE BE AWARE OF THIS MEDICINE, my initial thought on that is MoMo got overdosed and not that she had an allergic reaction. She had several ear infections throughout the years, she is 8 now and never had an allergic reaction to any of the medications before. Please make sure you double triple check and question every decision your vet makes so you wouldn't have to put your baby in this situation. My dog had a Respiratory infection. The insanely overly chatty female vet tech suggested that my dog needed the gold standard of care. Ok, what's that, and what's the cost? She said it would have my dog staying in the facility for a few days with a line of antibiotics dripping into him in an oxygen tent. That would be around TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS. When I declined, she handed me details of a pug rescue and said that if I couldn't afford to take care of my dog, I should surrender him. Thank you very much. When the vet came in, she was even talking over him. This happened about six months ago. My dog did just fine with oral antibiotics. My new vet has recently thoroughly examined my dog and said his lungs were great. Modern Animal charge like a wounded bull. The word is that the vets also earn a commission, so it's in their interests to rack the bill up sky-high. Whether or not that's true, it certainly feels that way. I am a new cat parent and I have been through a lot of health issues with my two pure bred maine coon kittens. it was very important to me that I was working with a supportive, honest experienced veterinarian who is a cat parent themselves. Dr Maynard is helping me monitor my kitten for a potentially v serious health concern. thank you to another patient who wrote a lovely yelp review about dr maynard at the pasadena location for putting her on my radar. my kitten trusts her and is so calm with her as well as the crew there and he exhibits 0 anxiety even in the waiting room with dogs. they let you come to the back of house with your pet when they're drawing blood, urine or doing ultra sounds, etc and encourage you to feed them little tube of wet treat to keep them calm through the process. I know this helps reduce both my kittens anxiety and my own. the app is easy to use and the staff respond at all hours of the day or night. it took some getting used to not to be able to call in but I've got it down now. If you have to speak to your vet directly, it's as easy as just making an appointment and asking in person. The annual fee pays for itself in just a few visits. The wait list will open up quickly. be patient. I've been to one other location and I can't say the same about the Dr I saw there in Studio City. Dr Maynard and Pasadena support team are the only ones I can confidently recommend. read more

I have 2 puppies and they have been with Modern animal since we first got them! It has been over a year and we renewed our membership for a second year because MA is that great! We've gone to the one in studio city in the past but we now only go to the Pasadena location. The staff here are super friendly and always welcoming. We always book our appointments with Dr. Yukari because our puppies love her and I really appreciate how she goes into details in her explanations. The staff are also super patient and very gentle with our puppies during their checkup. They have a lot of services... vaccines, dental, ear cleaning, nail trimming, or even just a check up! The location is also super clean and we are always seen right away when we arrive with an appointment. They also have an app, that is very helpful. It is very easy to set an appointment through it and there is always someone there to chat with if you need help setting up an appointment or if there's an emergency! They are also real people who answer, not just automated responses so they actually answer any questions you have or concerns about your pet! They've even answered me really late at night past midnight! They are also very thorough in their explanations! The vet spent under 10 minutes with our cat. Without even touching him, she said "he seems fine to me, but come back if it continues". The issue had already been going on for a few months, so I was confused why she wouldn't just address the issue while we were there. I asked for a blood test and two vet techs (not wearing gloves) poked my cat with the needle and couldn't seem to find the vein. My cat wasn't hissing or biting, only growling when poked with a needle. After a few minutes one of the vet techs says "I guess he doesn't want his blood taken" and told me I should just come back another time. It seemed like they had no clue how to take a cat's blood. I found it weird I was told twice to just come back later when I was at a scheduled appointment. I paid $80 to have my time wasted. I went to a different vet and my cat had a thyroid issue, which could've been treated earlier if this vet had felt like doing their job. Overall a weird and disappointing experience. read more

I can't even begin to tell you how excited I was when Modern Animal opened their Pasadena location!! I've been a loyal member for over a year and a half of their weho location, but Pasadena is just much more convenient for me (and my dog). The new location is just as beautifully designed as the first clinic. Really modern waiting room and super friendly staff! My dog had to get her annual flu vaccine and also her annual blood draw - she hates both but the Pasadena nurses were incredibly patient with us. They saw that she was uncomfy on the table so they all got onto the floor with her to give her the shot. Teigs walked out a happy dog! I use the virtual care at least once a month when Teigs gets into something she shouldn't have, or when she is scratching at her ear, or basically anything that seems out of the ordinary. And every visit + virtual care FaceTime is included in the membership fee. I kind of want to keep MA a secret but it's really too good to not share read more
